The argument in this article is that Horace's treatment of death, in literary terms, can be divided into three distinct phases: the first (41 to 30 years), in which he alludes to it in a distant, jocular and humorous way; the second (30 to 20), during which he feels overcome by an intense melancholy; and the third (20 to 8 years), in which, except for Ode IV 7, he almost forgets death altogether. The author sees the reasons for these three phases in the genre and in political and personal motives.

Herophilus was the discoverer of the woman´s “testicles” (nowadays known as “ovaries”) and this author called them δίδυμοι to make a difference between women and men. His new development was accepted by very few medical authors, especially when Dioscorides and Galen bet on ὂρχεις. In this article the values and the field of use of δίδυμοι are researched both from the medical and general Greek literature viewpoints.
This paper shows how some methods and strategies used for the making of dictionaries of modern languages can be applied to the lexicographical practice of ancient Greek. It is also analyzed what impact recent developments in other areas of Greek philology – especially text edition and textual criticism – have on lexicographical work.
The attentive consideration of Favorinus’ Corinthian speech (Ps.-Dio Chrys., or. XXXVII) has permitted to obtain a new reading proposal that clears the meaning of two anonymous fragments quoted in Cor., 11-13, fluently assigned to Eumelus’ Korinthiaká. Further more, the exegetic, linguistic and metric analysis of the quotations suggest the attribution to Greek lyric poetry, maybe the Aeschylus’ Isthmiastai, and to Sybilline oracles.
The aim of this paper is to analyze the literary phenomenon of cento from the perspective of intertextuality. Its imitative nature allows us to define it in relation to the different types of textual quotation, that is, allusion, quotation itself and plagiarism, taking into account the implications of transcribing a given text to a new one. At the same time, we will consider it in the context of the notion of imitatio in Antiquity, pointing out the difficulties of recognizing clear boundaries between
the different intertextual procedures.
The civic status of Theodotos in Lysias III
This paper revives the view, advanced in the past by several authorities but currently neglected, that τοῦτο τὸ ... παιδίον in Lysias 3.33 refers, not to Theodotos, the young man over whom the parties to the case had clashed, but to the speaker’s slave ἀκόλουθος. The problems usually perceived over the civic status of Theodotos vanish if this view is accepted.
All coincidences between Greek and Latin terminologies are, as a matter of fact, mechanically labeled as “calques”. But close examination of Ciceronian rhetorical and philosophical vocabularies shows, at first glance, that the Latin substitutes for Greek termini technici are more or less accurate translations, and often explanations, of their Greek counterparts.
