    No full text
This article deals with the interpretation of the Phrygian and Bithynian gloss γάνοϛ ‘hyena’, documented by Hesychius, on the basis of its comparison to some testimonies that, from our point of wiew, are variants of the same word, including the name which, according to Aristotle (HA 594 a, 27), some gave to this animal, γλάνοϛ.

Remarks on the morphology, phonology and orthography of Hisp.-Celt. LVGVEI and related matters

    Get PDF
While there is general consensus that the Hispano-Celtic form LVGVEI is the dative singular of the divine name Lugus, there is none at all about what its orthography represents phonologically and morphologically; from the proto-Celtic perspective, the form should appear as orthographic *‹ LVGOVEI ›. This paper assesses previous scholarship and argues that the attested form, in fact, continues the inherited form in a regular way.

    Get PDF
From the ideas on poetry expressed by Aristophanes himself lengthwise of his production, according to which he utilizes new forms besides the tópoi proper of the comedy, and he looks for not only delectare but also prodesse, in view of a “wise, ingenious” and “clever, skilful” public, we restate here the poetic conception of Clouds, postulating that it is not a tragicomedy or a hybrid, but, because of its components, its heroes, its resorts and attitudes, Aristophanes exposes it as example of trugw7día, that is to say, an example of a tragedy in disguise of comedy, uniting the two masks of the theatre, in order to detach that his work is not a mere amusement but it deals a serious and outstanding subject by means of jokes, a subject that is worthy of reflection; with this work, he made something different, to demonstrate the civic and social weight of the comic genre conceived in this manner, and to detach at once the independence and the proper value of the comedy as the reverse of the tragedy.

    Get PDF
Traditionally, the war in Colchis, which Valerius introduces in book VI of his Argonautica, has been believed to point out the appropiation by the Flavian epicist of the martial epic indebted to Homer’s Iliad as well as to the last six books of Vergil’s Aeneid.

    Falsas apariencias: rodio ΕΣΠΡΤΕΝ

    No full text
Rhodian ἐ̣σ̣[π]ράΤ̣εν is a ghost-form. The right reading should be ἐ̣σ̣[π]ρά̣Ζεν with an etymologically expected -Z- (cf. πέπρα̅γα, πρᾶγος, ἀπραγία). Erosion has effaced the lower bar of Τ̲ (archaic Z sign) in this inscription, making it appear to be a Τ. In Rhodian inscriptions of a more recent date, the local type πράζω, which can be compared to Cretan πράδδω (πράττω), has been replaced by the supradialectal secondary type πράσσω.

The textual contributions – about an hundred – produced either in the critical editions of the Dracontius’ Orestis tragoedia from 1858 to 1883, or in the works of Rothmaler (1865), L. Mu.ller (1866) and Rossberg (1878 / 79 / 83), are often obvious, but they are cometimes advantage due to laudable attention and right reflections. Notwithstanding, because of the many wrong marked gaps, transpositions and corrections, no edition presents an acceptable text of the epyllion. No disponible
