Plotin et Epicure
Epicurus’ gods are beautiful, their bodies’ particles are diaphanous, and the images they send forth. Plotinus does not seem embarassed by this view of gods which does not interfere with men’s affairs, but condemns the absence of Providence. The Epicurus’ sageness consists to prefer the pleasure, what is accepted by Plotinus, until he said that true happiness is good. Matter formed of atoms, and emptiness, the composed, are not convenient to Plotinus. Sensation will prove some nearness with the theory of eidola.
oai:emerita.revistas.csic.es:article/1Modern scholars believe – according to Plb. VI 40 and Seru. auct., Aen. XII 121 – that the Roman armies used only two types of marching array, the pilatum agmen and the quadratum agmen. But the evidences shows that quadrato agmine – a very low frequency lexical compound – means ‘in battle- array’, and that there were three distinct preclassic types of agmen : a) the “normal” one, a single column formation; b) the pilatum agmen, a lightened column to pass very difficult spots; c) the quadratum agmen, a three-column squared formation to march through open hostile country.
This paper, firstly, studies the definition of the battle of Pharsalus as a defeat, and the consequences of that election: a new interpretation of the Roman civil wars opposed to that of the Augustean poets. Secondly, it examines the intertexts which the poet uses to demonstrate that it is a very unjust defeat. In order to achieve his aim, Lucan, on the one hand, makes an antiphrastic use of epic models, and, on the other, he adapts the account of the climactic battle to the narrative design of the most notorious Roman defeats, according to traditional patterns in historical writing, especially those of Livy's canonical descriptions, modifying, however, in a significant way, some elements of its pattern.
