A critical discussion of the text of three passages of Catullus (36.9; 51.8; 62.15), the last of which has rarely been suspected by scholars. Previous conjectures are discussed before new emendations are offered.Se hace un análisis crítico del texto de tres pasajes de Catulo (36.9; 51.8; 62.15), el último de los cuales pocas veces ha sido puesto en duda por los estudiosos. Se discuten las conjeturas previas antes de ofrecer nuevas propuestas

    Διοhικετα Διολευθερι̣[-] IG V.1 700

t is almost universally admitted that in the Laconian inscription IG V.1 700, Διοhικετα and Διολευθερι [-] stand for the phonetic evolution of Διὸζ Ἱκέτα and Διὸζ Ἐλευθερίō. In both sequences final /s/ before an initial vowel allegedly underwent lenition, similarly to intervocalic /s/ in inner word position. The paper shows that this interpretation must be rejected for various reasons. On the contrary, both forms can be accounted for as compounds with first element Διοo.

All along his work, Ovid mentions hundreds of transformations. In his narration, apart from a number of implicit allusions to metamorphoses, he creates a very complex system that combines lexical, semantic and syntactical resources, in order not to be repetitive. This allows him to expand greatly the list of verbs with which he can express explicitly the fact that an entity can change into another entity. So, if he is primarily interested in the agent or the cause of the metamorphosis, that is, the causative construction, he uses the verbs uerto, facio and muto (this last verb is his favourite one, and is probably used by Ovid for the first time with this sense) in active voice; when he wants to focus on the person who undergoes the change (inacusative construction), he uses uerto, facio and muto in passive voice, or the verb fio. But if he refers to a character who has the ability to metamorphose (inergative construction), he uses uerto in passive voice, or fio. In the cases of the verbs muto (in active or passive), uerto (in active or passive), eo (in passive), abeo (in passive), flecto (in passive), confero (in active), animo (in active), etc. the result of the transformation is often expressed with in + accusative. In the cases of uerto and muto, the result can be also codified as ablative without preposition; and with muto, cum + ablative is also possible. However, when the verbs facio and have the meaning of `transforming ´or `getting transformed into´ they don´t present any special construction. On the other hand, Ovid barely uses the verbs conuerto and transformo, which were already used by other authors before him.

    No full text
The article discusses the problems and tensions surrounding the definition of Athenian citizenship at the end of fifth century and early fourth century BC, which are related to the evolution in forms of dependence after the Peloponnesian War. Citizenship rights, alongside personal leadership questions and public and private economic factors, analyzed in other works, reveal a complex but consistent picture of the Athenian society, in which all of these elements interact and explain each other.

    Get PDF
Impersonal constructions holding a complement both in dative and genitive are attested in Greek with a few verbs, which share the property of expressing the interests or the needs of human beings. These constructions, which occur in several ancient Indo- European languages, are documented in the post- Homeric period in the case of Greek. In the opposite, personal constructions, which appear more recently in other languages, are already documented in Greek since Homer’s times. The dative in the impersonal construction refers to human entities, codes the Experiencer and it is also the topic. These properties, which are close to those of the prototypical subject, seem to allow the dative to show some subject-like syntactic behaviour. In fact, we will argue that the dative in the impersonal construction behaves as a semi-subject, i. e. a verbal complement which, regardless of its coding, does have a set of properties that are typically associated with the subject in Greek. As well as the complement in dative, the complement in genitive in the impersonal construction exhibits a syntactic behaviour similar to the subject. However, the genitive does not follow the same patterns the dative does in the impersonal construction.

    Get PDF
In light of the fact that the traditional reconstruction of the Indo-European non-thematic accusative plural suffix *-ns, as the combination of the accusative desinence *-m and the plural ending *-s, violates a linguistic universal which stipulates: «If morphemes of both number and case are present and both follow or both precede the noun base, then the exponent of number almost always comes between the noun base and the exponent of case» (The Universals Archive of the Association for Linguistic Typology), this article explores a possible etymology of the suffix which is consonant with that universal.
