Developing the attitude scale for Arduino use in courses
The purpose of this study was to develop a Likert-type scale to determine the attitudes of teachers and preservice teachers towards using Arduino in their courses. Arduino is one of the leading robotic vehicles in education. There is much data about how attitudes shape behaviors. The positive attitude of the teachers about the usefulness of Arduino in the educational context is a facilitating component for them to use it more effectively. In the process of developing the scale, the Likert scale development process consisting of 8 steps determined by Anderson was followed. The draft test was applied to a total 312 teachers who are working in 11 different disciplines and participated in Arduino courses. The data obtained as a result of the Kaiser-Meyer-Olkin (KMO) and Bartlett tests were determined to be suitable for factor analysis. As a result of the factor analysis, a scale with a single factor, consisting of 21 items and with a value of .919 Cronbach's Alpha, was obtained. The purpose of this study was to develop a Likert-type scale to determine the attitudes of teachers and preservice teachers towards using Arduino in their courses. Opinions of Parents on Social Media Shares about Children
With the increased use of smart phones, social media apps are now only a touch away. Our country is at the top in the social media usage rankings. Social media apps easily accessed by adults have also increased the frequency of shares posted by parents about their children on their social media accounts. This study aimed to determine the opinions of parents on the shares they post on social media about their children. This research was based on phenomenological research design which is one of the qualitative research approaches. The study was carried out with the participation of 42 parents, including 28 mothers and 14 fathers who have a child aged 0-8. An interview form was developed by the researchers with the aim to obtain data from the study. The findings obtained from the interviews conducted with the participant parents showed that 15 of them do not post social media content about their children, while 27 of them do share social media content about their children. However, of all the participant parents, 20 asserted that posts about children should not be shared on social media, whereas the other 20 stated that such posts should be shared, and 2 of them said that they do not have any opinion. In this context, it can be recommended to train parents about internet literacy
Social Studies Pre-Service Teachers’ Awareness of Environmental Ethics
Aim of this study is to determine environmental ethic perception of prospective social studies teachers. In the study, descriptive survey model was used. Research sample consists of prospective social studies teachers studying in Buca Faculty of Education at Dokuz Eylul University. "Personal Information Form” and "Environmental Ethics Awareness Scale" developed by Özer (2015) were used as data collection tools. After application of data collection tools, data were gathered, and findings about research problem and sub problems were presented. Relationships between environmental ethics awareness level and personal characteristics, such as age, gender, grade level and settlement area etc. were examined, by analyzing findings in computer via SPSS program. As a result of the significant differences obtained in the findings, it revealed that female students were more conscious of environmental ethics than male students. It is also seen that the awareness of environmental ethics has decreased with increased age. Likewise, it was concluded that the grade level was inversely proportional to the awareness of environmental ethics and it was understood that the place of residence did not have a meaningful impact on the awareness of environmental ethics. In conclusion part of the study, recommendations were made that studies on environmental ethics be implemented upon different samples by different variables, and that environmental ethics awareness level be improved
Transforming communicative tasks into mini-projects
With the action-oriented approach first introduced by the CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages), the goal of language teaching witnessed a transition from transmission of information (exchange of information) in the classroom to acting together (social action) in and/or outside the classroom and hence from training successful communicators to training social actors. The implementation of the action-oriented approach in language textbooks in the form of mini-projects, however, is an issue not addressed commonly in the field. This study critically analyses the tasks named as ‘projects’ at the end of the first, sixth and eighth units of the English textbook “İngilizce 7” used in the secondary schools in Turkey to show that they do not reflect the characteristics of mini-projects as a form of the application of the action-oriented approach in language textbooks. Secondly, how these tasks can be transformed into mini-projects is explained
An investigation into mathematics-related pedagogical content knowledge of preschool educators based on institution type
This study aimed to investigate the level of mathematics-related pedagogical knowledge of educators working in preschool institutions. This descriptive study included 153 participants working as educators at preschool institutions affiliated to the Turkish Ministry of National Education or operated independently (private), and at kindergartens affiliated to the Turkish Ministry of Family, Labor and Social Services (MFLSS). The educators’ knowledge levels were examined using the “Pedagogical Content Knowledge in Early Childhood Mathematics Education” scale, which was developed by Smith (1998) and adapted to the Turkish context by Aksu and Kul (2017). The scale consists of 15 items with 6 dimensions focused on numbers, patterns, sorting, shapes, spatial perception, and comparison. SPSS version 23 statistical software was used to analyze the data. The results of the study suggested that the pedagogical levels of the educators were low. Educators working at kindergartens operated by the MFLSS had significantly lower levels of pedagogical knowledge than educators working at other institutions, and the education level of those working at state preschools were higher than those working at other kindergartens
An investigation on the types of teacher motivation and their emotional labor strategies
This study investigates whether the emotional labor strategies used by teachers are predicted by their motivation types and at what level teachers’ altruistic behaviors and personality traits predict their types of motivation. The data were collected from 596 teachers working in Ankara, with the stratified sampling method. A path analysis was conducted to explore the relationships among teachers’ altruistic behaviors, personality traits, motivation types, and the use of emotional labor strategies. The findings indicate that most of the altruistic behaviors predict teachers’ motivation types while among personality traits only neuroticism is a significant predictor. Lastly, external motivation predicts automatic emotion regulation/ emotional deviance while acting is predicted by all the motivation types.
