Adjustment of Syrian Refugee Children into Pre-School Education in Turkey
A qualitative case study was used in this study in order to determine the pre-school education adjustment problems of a Syrian child refugee who had fled from his homeland and took refuge in Turkey. The research participants were the child’s family, teachers, and the principal of the school where the child was educated at pre-school. For the purposes of the study, data were collected through interviews and analyzed by the qualitative content analysis method. According to study results, one of the important factors affecting the adaptation of the children to the school is the communication problem. Another factor is the fact that Syrian families do not have sufficient financial condition. Also, official procedures, though not directly affecting the child, can indirectly affect children through parent-teacher relationships. Another remarkable result is prejudices, which have been examined in three different dimensions as children, parents and teachers, and recommendations for solutions were presented
Coaching teachers to integrate technology: The effects of technology integration on student performance and critical thinking
This article presents the results of a mixed-methods study that investigated effects of technology integration practices of teachers in a 5th grade students’ scores and critical thinking in a public school, and introduced coaching for technology integration as a strategy to train in-service teachers for technology integration. The purpose of the research was to analyse how technology integration in science course effects on student's performance and critical thinking. The participants were 132 students and four teachers in elementary public school. The study used an experimental research design by having a control and research group (68 were in the two teachers’ classrooms that were using technology without coaching intervention and 64 were in the other two teachers’ classrooms, coached by the researchers to integrate available technologies). The data were collected through pre-test and post-test, classroom observation and semi-structured interview with teachers. The results showed that coached teachers integrated technology more frequently, purposefully and diversely. Additionally, the results indicated that technology integration positively affected student performance and student critical thinking behaviours in the 5th grade science unit
A Field of learning and living: suitability of school gardens for children
The aim of this study is to reveal the opinions of primary school teachers and school managers about the evaluation of primary school gardens for children. This study was conducted with phenomenological method is one of qualitative research designs. The data of study was collected through semi-structured interviews, study group consisted of 30 teachers and 12 school managers. Photographs of school gardens and students' drawings are other data collection tools of the research. The data were analyzed by content analysis method. The findings obtained that playgrounds are thought to be important in terms of supporting development of child, providing socialization, supporting learning and having fun. The majority of participants think that their school gardens are not enough. The lack of playgrounds in school gardens, the lack of green area and use of garden as a car park are examples of these inadequacies
Investigation of Teacher Candidates’ 21st Century Learner Skills via PAMS
In this study we aim to examine the latent profiles of teacher candidates’ 21st century learner skills. In other words, we intend to discover the profiles of participant groups who hang together in terms of 21st century learner skill scores. The data are gathered from students who enrolled in either undergraduate programs in the school of education or pedagogical formation certificate programs. For data collection purposes, we used the 21st century learner skills usage inventory. In order to achieve our goal, profile analysis via multidimensional scaling approach is employed. Data analysis resulted in two-dimensional solution indicating two major profile patterns. Students whose observed patterns are similar to the first major profile tend to have lower ability in cognitive processing and coding of information and realization of the products. They tend to have higher abilities in self-management, self-control, designing more flexible learning environment, and adaptation of new technology. These students are expected to be better at collaboration-based activities. Students whose observed patterns are similar to the second major profile are expected to be good at self-management, self-control and they are expected to have higher self- and collaborative-learning abilities
Development and validation of the English Teachers’ Attitudes towards Recruitment System Scale
Teacher assessment and evaluation (TAE) of a nation is an important determinant of its teacher quality and student achievement. However, literature lacks a scale for displaying English teachers’ attitudes towards TAE model in an English as a Foreign Language (EFL) context where teachers are assessed and evaluated via high-stakes tests based on multiple choice questions. The English Teachers’ Attitudes towards Recruitment System Scale (ETARS) has been developed based on the existing literature, and data were collected from various stakeholders (policymakers, education experts, teacher trainers, teachers, student teachers). The data were piloted with 319 teachers through exploratory factor analysis. Then, a confirmatory factor analysis was utilized with 260 teachers. Results indicated the ETARS, comprised of 23 items and three dimensions, to be a valid and reliable instrument. Finally, the ETARS was applied to 260 English teachers to reveal their attitudes towards Turkish TAE model in terms of various variables. Findings displayed that English teachers had negative attitudes towards the current TAE model. This research fills the gap in the literature by providing the ETARS
Analysis of Riau Traditional Games Based on Ethnomatematics in Developing Mathematical Capabilities of Elementary School Students
The purpose of this study was to analysis of riau traditional games based on ethnomatematics in developing mathematical capabilities of elementary school students. This adopts qualitative methods of the type of realist ethnography revealed in the narrative. The data was collected through observations, interviews, and documentation. In the study, it was found that some difficulties are faced by students who are less able to connect the learning in the classroom with their environment so that teacher needs effort in packaging learning to improve student interest and motivation. Factors that make students difficult consist of internal factors (motivation and self-nature of students) and external factors (the use of learning approaches/strategies, media and learning resources that arouse student interest). Whereas teacher was found to connect the mathematic learning with traditional game pacu jalur as one of Riau culture
Teaching computing at secondary school level: Understanding teachers’ experiences and challenges
The purpose of the study is to evaluate the efficiency of the computer science teachers’ guide prepared for the 5th Grade Computing Course in Turkey. Experiences of 111 teachers regarding the implementation process were gathered through a survey. The results revealed that the 5th Grade Teachers’ Guide to Teach Computing’ is a supportive material for the delivery of CS education. Most of the teachers found the activities and general framework of the lessons to be useful. Despite most of the opinions being positive, on some points, the teachers considerably criticized the activities contained within the guide. It can be said that the results of the study offer a roadmap to practitioners on how to develop an effective guide for CS teachers, and how to create effective learning activities and materials for students
Identifying Distance Learners’ Learning Styles
This study aimed to identify the learning styles of distance learners studying for an associate’s degree in computer programming and child development and to determine whether there is a difference between the departments.
