Appropriation and political expression in urban public spaces | Apropriação e expressão política nos espaços públicos urbanos
Get PDFThere are many, diverse issues that determine the relationship between citizens and their public urban spaces and, consequently, the significance that these spaces acquire for society as a whole. In totalitarian regimes however, the use of streets and parks as places of protest and resistance against sequestered freedom is not permitted. However, in democratic regimes, the reflections and discourse of architects, urbanists, researchers and policy makers regarding the manner in which public urban space is (or should be) appropriated by the population, has revealed a systematic reinterpretation of these spaces. Indeed, ever since the last decades of the past century, it has become recurrent to associate these physical spaces with the space of political realization. The intention of the present article is to bring the meaning of this association into debate, above all due to the insurgencies from certain segments of our population, which have taken place over recent years, manifestly in the streets, parks and avenues of our cities

Get PDFThe month of June 2013 has entered the annals of recent Brazilian history, due to the street protests throughout the country’s major cities, which showcased facets of the country’s reality to a world already focused on Brazil, as it prepared to host the 2014 World Cup. The aim of this article is to summarize the manifestations, which took place in public spaces, contextualize them into recent Brazilian events, and demonstrate how they appeared as a consequence of the increasing loss of political voice in contemporary society due to globalization. This same phenomenon would seem to present its own possible solutions to the very problems it has created, such as those indicated by Milton Santos (2000), Hardt and Negri (2005), mostly through networked actions and the concept of “multitude”. However, having moved on a few years from the Jornadas de Junho, the particular dissensions and lack of clarity surrounding the demands reveal a horizon on which political participation is still vacillating and confused

Get PDFOnline social networks have played a key role in the struggle for rights and for more sustainable, less unequal cities. In Brazil, this movement is relatively recent, and has tended to increase in the face of threats or crises that might adversely affect the rights, welfare or life of a city’s residents, or the public interest. The Movimento Ocupe Estelita fights against the interests of capital, symbolised by the Projeto Novo Recife, a project destined for the Cais Estelita. The movement started in 2012 and shows signs of resistance and resilience. This article aims to identify the theoretical and empirical basis of this resilience. The research was based on participatory online and offline observation and interviews at the encampment, with a chronology of the occupation process and subsequent campaigns of resistance and struggle. Finally, the movement’s capacity to reinvent itself and grow stronger despite continual disputes is analysed

Get PDFEntre las transformaciones que se dan en las ciudades, la rehabilitación cobra relevancia al poner en valor sectores decadentes, como los asociados al ferrocarril, dotándolos de nuevas estructuras y funciones. La cultura aparece como factor estratégico de revitalización de la imagen urbana. La producción social del espacio, como secuencia compleja históricamente desarrollada, es contradictoria y entremezcla distintas prácticas espaciales, representaciones simbólicas e imaginario social. El análisis de las representaciones y acciones de los actores involucrados en el proceso de regeneración de la Redonda y el Parque Federal, ciudad de Santa Fe (a través de sus discursos, programas, reglamentaciones), permite exponer los tipos de apropiación, el simbolismo del espacio y la identidad social urbana. Teniendo como eje la cotidianeidad del barrio, la infancia y el trabajo ferroviario, se estudia la producción de un espacio diferencial, sobre la base de la gestión asociada entre ciudadanos, vecinos autoconvocados, poderes públicos y agentes privados
The inclusion and access of social housing movements to Minha Casa Minha Vida: the emergence of the Entidades modality | Inserção e acesso dos movimentos sociais de moradia no Programa Minha Casa Minha Vida: o surgimento da modalidade Entidades
Get PDFIn 2009, when the Minha Casa Minha Vida Program was introduced, there was a specific modality contained within its portfolio, which was to be executed by non-profit entities. However, because it was known from the very start that this program had been proposed and structured by those from within the civil construction industry, we decided to undertake an investigation, which could explain the emergence of a modality called Entidades, together with its scope. The present article analyzes and discusses the importance of the advent of this modality, seeking to problematize it from the viewpoint of the insertion and access of a specific group: the social housing movements. The analysis has been based on the literature, legislation and documentation regarding the program, as well as interviews with leaders and empirical research into projects under construction in the city of São Paulo and the metropolitan region
