Bridging the global gap: Comparative insights on early childhood education models from Finland to sub-Saharan Africa

    No full text
This comparative study explores the global disparities in early childhood education (ECE) by examining two contrasting contexts: Finland and Sub-Saharan Africa. While Finland is internationally recognized for its universal, play-based, and highly professionalized ECE system, many African nations face significant challenges in achieving both access and quality. Drawing on international literature and field observations, the paper illustrates how Finland’s “educare” model—characterized by pedagogically trained teachers, individualized learning plans, and strong welfare integration—produces equitable learning environments. In contrast, Sub-Saharan Africa’s ECE landscape is marked by low enrollment, limited government investment, untrained teaching staff, and infrastructure deficits. Yet, the region also demonstrates promising grassroots innovations, such as Kenya’s Kidogo social franchise model and community-run preschools that adapt education to local needs using limited resources.  The manuscript argues that U.S. early education policy can draw lessons from both settings: adopting Finland’s systemic equity-oriented approach while embracing Africa’s context-driven, community-based strategies. Recommendations include improving teacher training and compensation, ensuring curriculum alignment with developmental goals, expanding universal access, and integrating health and family services with pre-primary programs. The study emphasizes that quality ECE is not only a moral and developmental imperative but also a strategic investment in national well-being. Ultimately, bridging global ECE gaps requires nuanced, culturally sensitive strategies that honor local contexts while advancing equity, inclusion, and child-centered pedagogy across all settings. A systematic review of the rolling shear modulus of timber

    No full text
The rolling shear modulus of Cross-Laminated Timber (CLT) and other engineered timber governs the performance and stability. The study was systematically analyzed using rolling shear modulus tests on hardwoods and softwoods. Literature was searched in Scopus, Google Scholar, and Web of Science for papers on rolling shear modulus, timber, and structural applications. Articles were chosen based on their relevance, high methodological quality, and outcome clarity. The review reveals that values of rolling shear modulus were different between planar, short-span bending, and modified planar shear tests. Spruce and pine have a smaller value of rolling shear modulus as compared to beech and oak. This disparity emphasizes the need for standardized testing for reliable evaluations. An analysis of the results with respect to materials selection, and species-specific structural design in timber engineering is made presenting insights into rolling shear modulus. Findings reveal that the Iosipescu shear test to be the most recommended method for determining the rolling shear modulus of timber. This test directly measures the shear stress-strain response and provides more consistent and reliable results compared to other methods, such as the torsion test or the panel shear test.  Keywords: Rolling Shear Modulus, Timber Engineering, Cross-Laminated Timber, Hardwood, Softwood

Evaluating Location Privacy Degradation in Urban Vehicular Communication Systems

    No full text
The continuous exchange of data in Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X) communication systems between vehicles and other vehicles, infrastructure, and networks exposes these vehicles to location privacy degradation risks. While these systems are critical for improving traffic efficiency and safety, they also pose risks by potentially exposing sensitive information about users’ locations and travel habits over time. To address this issue, we evaluated a trip-based location privacy metric to understand how accumulated data affects user privacy in urban vehicular systems using entropy, a mathematical measure of uncertainty, to quantify privacy levels. Specifically, we ran a 4-week simulation in an urban simulation environment, using entropy to quantify privacy and track how repeated trip observations degrade privacy over time. Our findings reveal a significant decline in user privacy as data accumulation reveals repeated travel patterns. Our work shows the importance of integrating long-term data accumulation in privacy assessments. This contribution will lead to the design of more effective privacy-preserving strategies for future vehicular communication systems.
