Exploring Routley's Nuclear Meinongianism and Beyond

    Get PDF
Even though Richard Routley is known as a proponent of so-callednuclear Meinongianism (in his terminology, noneism), the details of hisview in Exploring Meinong’s Jungle and Beyond (1980) have not attractedmuch attention. In this paper, I critically examine two notablebut less known features of Meinongianism in Routley (1980) which particularlyconcern a core claim of nuclear Meinongianism that so-calledCharacterization Principle (CP) is applicable to nuclear properties(in his terminology, characterizing properties) but not to extranuclearproperties (in his terminology, noncharacterizing properties): The firstone is his ‘double determination’ argument for restricting the class ofproperties to which CP is applicable; and the second is his expansionof the class of nuclear properties in terms of the supposition operator s.Firstly, I will show that the double determination argument fails, since, for some extranuclear properties, the argument fails to justify that CPis not applicable to them, and, moreover, the argument unintendedlyshows that CP is not applicable to some nuclear properties. Secondly, based on the idea that the supposition operator, combined with anyproperty f, forms the intensional property of being assumed to havef, I will give a formal treatment of the supposition operator withinthe framework of world semantics. We will see that this interpretationgoes beyond Routley’s original nuclear Meinongianism and assimilateshis view with modal Meinongianism proposed by Priest (2005, 2016)

    Bi-Modal Naive Set Theory

    Get PDF
This paper describes a modal conception of sets, according to which sets are 'potential' with respect to their members. A modal theory is developed, which invokes a naive comprehension axiom schema, modified by adding 'forward looking' and 'backward looking' modal operators. We show that this 'bi-modal' naive set theory can prove modalized interpretations of several ZFC axioms, including the axiom of infinity. We also show that the theory is consistent by providing an S5 Kripke model. The paper concludes with some discussion of the nature of the modalities involved, drawing comparisons with noneism, the view that there are some non-existent objects

In a range of meaningful contexts: 25 years of struggle for meaning in mathematics teaching

    Get PDF
The use of meaningful contexts has been a given in New Zealand’s mathematics curricula for the last 25 years. They hold a privileged position, but there has been little examination of why they are given this position either nationally or internationally, even though there is solid evidence that the use of contexts and word problems in mathematics is not without implications for equitable access to mathematics, student learning, and assessment of learning. So what are the affordances and constraints of taking the meaningful context approach to mathematics? What has been the impact of taking this approach on student achievement and learning? These are important questions given The New Zealand Curriculum is ten years old and a curriculum review is looming. These questions are being raised to start an essential debate for mathematics education in New Zealand, one that needs to take place prior to any curriculum review so an informed decision on the place and nature of meaningful contexts in future mathematics curricula can be made

Professional Learning and Distributed Leadership: A Symbiotic Relationship

    Get PDF
Pedagogical improvement in early childhood education (ECE) is critically impacted by leadership and professional learning. Despite this importance, government funding for ECE professional learning has been significantly reduced over the past decade. Meanwhile, a growing body of research is suggesting that teacher professional learning is most effective when contextualised and sustained over time. In ECE, positional leaders have responsibility for ensuring ongoing teacher professional learning and the development of the programme while developing a culture of distributed leadership. This interpretive mixed-methods study examined the practices and perceptions of ECE teachers and leaders about leadership and professional learning. Surveys and interviews were designed to reveal the relationship between distributed leadership and professional learning in ECE settings and sought to discover practices of effective positional leaders in facilitating both. From the results of this study, it emerged that distributed leadership and professional learning are symbiotic and that ECE positional leaders need to develop certain leadership practices within their services in order to successfully foster both

Greytown: the oldest inland colonial town

    Get PDF
Greytown is the oldest town in the Wairarapa established under the Small Farms Association, and the oldest inland settlement of the British colonial era. In March 1854, at a meeting held in the Crown and Anchor Hotel in Wellington, 49 settlers selected town acres in Greytown. By the 1870s Greytown had its own newspaper, a school, a hospital and a flourishing retail and commercial base. In 1871 the Greytown Trust Act was passed and the town became a centre for farming, flax, and timber milling though it suffered from the regular flooding of the Waiohine river. Greytown became a borough in 1878 but stopped growing when the railway by-passed it. This paper explores the extant buildings from that period and issues around maintaining the Greytown Historic Heritage Precinct

Making Sense of Commercial Common Sense

    Get PDF
The article examines the use of "commercial common sense" in the interpretation of commercial contracts. It reviews the origins of the test of commercial common sense and traces the application of the test in relatively recent New Zealand and United Kingdom appellate decisions. The author's contention is that the test is only properly applied when a court asks itself which of the interpretations put forward by the parties is most consistent with the contracting parties' mutual commercial purpose. The test is not properly applied when a court prefers one interpretation to another simply because it is the court's view that the alternative would mean one party made a particularly bad bargain.&nbsp

Promoting Safety Through Law, National and International, and by Other Means

The Woodhouse family, friends of Sir Owen Woodhouse and the law faculties of the Victoria University of Wellington and the University of Auckland decided on the occasion of what would have been Sir Owen Woodhouse's 100th birthday that a fellowship and lectureship should be established in recognition of the great contributions he has made to law and policy in New Zealand and beyond. The fellows and lecturers are not to see themselves as limited to the law and are encouraged to address broader matters challenging people here and abroad. Sir Kenneth Keith gave the inaugural Sir Owen Woodhouse Memorial Lecture in Wellington on 29 August 2017 and in Auckland on 30 August 2017. The address considers in turn the dangers and perils at work, at sea and on the battlefield. It reflects on New Zealand's accident compensation scheme and suggests possible extensions to the scheme

    Genuine Relationship: Pure Adaptation

    Get PDF
The present research attempted to focus on the concept of adaptation (in theatre) from the perspective of Walter Benjamin’s philosophical concept of pure language firstly introduced in 1923. In so doing, three adapted into Persian performed plays Marg-e Foroushandeh (Borhani Marand, 2015), Ghat-e Dast dar Spokan (Khojasteh, 2015), and Pish az Sobhaneh-ye Jadali (Rezaee, 2016) were studied along with their English written source playtexts Death of a Salesman, A Behanding in Spokane and Before Breakfast, respectively by Arthur Miller, Martin McDonagh and Eugene O'Neill. In each case, the source playtext and its adapted performed play had to be seen as the two main fragmentary languages detached from a larger whole in the fall from grace. Using Ladoucer’s (1995) model of dramatic text translation, the alterations carried out in the main verbal and nonverbal text components (speech lines/dialogues and stage directions) were studied to see which performances were deserved to be considered as purely adapted ones. Finally, the results indicated that not all the transposed performances could be seen as pure adaptations rooted in creativity in its true sense, occupying a middle position between dependency and deviation
