    THE ORIGIN OF BEACH NAMES IN TANJUNGSARI: TOPONYMY STUDIES

    This toponymy study discusses the origin names of beaches in Tanjungsari Subdistrict, Gunungkidul Regency, Yogyakarta which are spread in three villages, namely Kemadang, Ngestirejo, and Banjarejo. This research aims to documents the naming of beaches in the area and classifies the naming into three presuppositions meaning based on Nyström’s theory, which are categorical, associative, and emotive meaning. This study used a qualitative research method. Research data were collected by means of observation and interviews with Village Hall officials and the community. The results of this study can be used to add information that can be conveyed to tourists. The results showed that categorical meaning on the beaches in Tanjungsari District is dominated by geographical condition, while the least is people’s name category. Associative presupposition meaning is dominated by neutral associative meaning, which are sea and conditions geographical. Meanwhile, the least dominant meaning of the associative presupposition is positive associative meaning. The dominant meaning of the emotive presupposition is the emotive meaning positive, which is happy. The least dominating out of the emotive presupposition meaning is the neutral emotive presupposition. Most beach naming comes from Javanese. This is influenced by the language spoken by most local communit

    The fortress in the 20th century has certain characteristics to match the war strategy that is applied at this time. In 1900 the Kustbatterij Kedoeng-Tjowek project or Kedung Cowek fortress was built as a coastal defense for the city of Surabaya by the Dutch colonial. This study aims to identify the function of each building contained in the Kedung Cowek fort military area using a component review by their availability and categorization. Based on the analysis results it is known that each building has a specific function related to the concept of panopticon to apply the value of surveillance in its defense system

    THE JĀTAKAMĀLĀ RELIEFS OF BOROBUDUR: BENEFICIAL AND INSIGHTFUL ACTS IN ADVERSE TIMES

    This study is aimed to examine seven selected allegories of Āryaśūra’s Jātakamālā engraved in Candi Borobudur, to analyze the multiple aspects of the six perfections (pāramitās) exemplified in them and how these perfections are applied in day-to-day life. The literature study involved data collection triangulation to determine the extant Jātakamālā and pāramitā texts closest to the sources. Content analysis on the Jātakamālā texts and observation of its corresponding reliefs were carried out to identify the message and substantial points of each allegory. Both the actions and the motivation driving the character to perform such actions are considered. Using thematic analysis, the actions performed are categorized and correlated with the definition and meaning of each pāramitā. The results of the research indicate that although emphasis may be placed more on a particular perfection, multiple aspects of the perfections are presented in each allegory. The practice of the six perfections which to be cultivated jointly by those walking the path to Perfect Awakening also represent the universal values of generosity, non-harmfulness, tolerance, joyous effort, vigilance, and wisdom. This study allows one to see Borobudur’s carved reliefs in a way, which will hopefully engender appreciation for the cultural heritages of our ancestors

In response to these dynamics, the issue of the relationship between the digital realm and community policing that has been implemented is important to study. The study is expected to reflect thoughts on the issue of crime in the digital realm, concepts and models of community policing, as well as ways to increase the potential of contextual Community Policing.     DRAMATURGY, SPLIT PERSONALITY AND THE QUESTION OF IDENTITY IN EFFIONG JOHNSON’S SON OF THE LAND

    The nature of man in relationship with his society is ambivalent, reflecting that human beings have the capacity to alter their personality to fit in to the situation they are confronted with at different times. This alterations result in indeterminate portrayal of human identity in creative works. No character is whole until the social condition he is pitched against justifies him. This paper evaluates Effiong Johnson’s treatment of indeterminacy of the human selves in a chaotic social milieu in Son of the Land. It uses qualitative research methodology and bases its theoretical framework on Sigmund Freud’s Psychodynamic Theory. Findings show that uncertainty of social conditions may force people to vary the attitudes they put up for survival. Dramaturgy is the various impressions people put up at different times. Personality is the discernible self marked for a particular regular situation, while the quirk in the marked self suggests split-personality. The totality of all selves in their sameness or differentiation in the confrontations with pleasant and unpleasant situations in life suggests human identity. The paper concludes that unstable society will provide unstable citizens. The circumstances people face in life shape their pattern of thought which motivates action they take. Everyone puts up a self when confronted with a happenstance. The knowledge of human behaviour should be broadened in drama to help in the curtailment of sweeping conclusion over human attitude, varying selves and identity in the society.KEYWORDS: Dramaturgy, Personality, Identity, Effiong Johnson.     CHUKWUMA ANYANWU: DRAMATIC REFLECTIONS ON THE NIGERIAN SOCIETY

    Drama performs various roles in the society. One of such roles is the re-presentation of past events. These past events are historical antecedents which a given society is meant to be abreast of in order to cut a proper walking path for the future, either to avoid pitfalls of the past or uphold a certain standard. Likening drama to a mirror, this paper discussed the reflective nature of drama in the Nigerian society. Through the use of the literary method, Chukwuma Anyanwu’s dramatic texts, Stunted Growth, The Battle, Another Weekend, Gone! and Broken Image, were analysed to ascertain how well the playwright was able to project the Nigerian society through these works. It was discovered that the plays were well crafted by the author and that they mirrored the Nigerian milieu. It was therefore concluded that members of the society, especially the political class, should learn from these plays and build a society that is devoid of intimidation, corruption, oppression of the masses and the mass media, in order for democracy to thrive

    The COVID-19 pandemic has changed the interaction patterns and culture of society. The pretext of limiting interactions as the key to handle COVID-19 certainly has various challenges in its implementation in society. Regulators have promulgated various global and national policies (in macro level). It is necessary to ascertain whether the policy can be conveyed and implemented correctly at the micro-level in the community, which has various social and cultural characters. Neighborhood Association (known as Rukun Warga in Indonesia), as the smallest community in society, is undoubtedly the spearhead in ensuring all global and national policies can be carried out correctly. The advancement in technology with social media as its main strength can certainly facilitate various scenarios for preventing COVID-19, as long as it is well utilized. Human cross-checks remain the key to filtering this abundant amount of information. This research intends to study how the role of technology in bridging global information regarding the prevention of COVID-19 can be conveyed well to micro-communities such as Neighborhood Association, as well as seeing the role of the association in sorting out the information presented by technology and making it a COVID-19 prevention treatment according to local wisdom and community character. This study found that technology (especially social media) played a significant role in delivering information and socialization to the Neighborhood Association level. Also, the association has various ways of translating global and national socialization into a treatment that impacts society's compliance regarding social interactions according to health protocols. Furthermore, the author also found that the globally proclaimed restriction for social interactions strengthens social interaction at the Neighborhood Association's micro or environmental level

    RETHINKING THE HUMANITIES IN THE CONTEXT OF INTERTEXUALITY AND ADAPTATIONS WITHIN THE DIASPORIC CONSTRUCT

    Drastic socio/political and economic changes in the world have perhaps led to global mass migration, transcontinental transport or scattering of people away from their established or ancestral homeland. This obviously explains the vitality that has characterized the creative impetus of intertextuality and adaptation mechanics used by certain Nigerian diaspora dramatists over the years as group identity formation and social pattern of identity politics and cultural belonging in expressing universal human concerns. The question however is; has the adaptation of classical or historical plays to the dawn of modern play texts by Nigerian diaspora dramatists reinforced the Nigerian culture? The condition is foregrounded on the mind-set of most literary critics, who now seek to know where ‘home’ actually is, or what ‘rights’ and/or ‘entitlements’ an indigene-settler within the diasporic framework can celebrate in terms of human diversity or uniformity as they provide an insight into a world that is different from their own. It is this conceptual and cross platform reflections on themes and context within the diasporic construct of trans-textual adaptation, cultural citizenship vis-à-vis national or global idea of developing culture across borders that the paper attempted to interrogate. Using adaptation theory as its framework, the paper adopts a qualitative method of investigation. It is assumed that, the likes of Wole Soyinka, Ola Rotimi, J.P. Clark, Femi Osofisan, Ngugi Wa Thiong’o, Athol Fugard, Efua Sutherland and a host of others had adapted foreign play texts in order to engender socio/political interrelatedness based on their diasporic experiences and worldviews. The paper, therefore, concludes that; Diaspora formations have actually influenced theatre practice in Nigeria nay Africa through play-texts adaptation paradigms as vehicles that can be supportive of constructing peaceful societies

    PRIVACY INSIDE SOVIET COMMUNAL LIFE IN THE FILM ДЫЛДА BY KANTEMIR BALAGOV

    Russia has a culture of communal living that already existed far before the Soviet era. In the soviet regime, communal living was seen as an instrument to reach Soviet’s utopian objective. In order to minimize dissident movements and rebellions, people are pressed to live together so they can watch each other. As a result, no Russian word could describe privacy, the concept itself did not grow in Russian society. Although consciousness of privacy needs began to grow. In the meantime, people around the world start to fix privacy issues by formulating the law, while Soviet people still dealing with the concept itself. Many of Russian films shows the privacy issue in Soviet communal life, one of them is a film by Kantemir Balagov (2019) titled Дылда/Dylda (Beanpole). The film is relatively new, therefore, not much previous research about it. By analyzing how the film Дылда shows privacy in Soviet communal life, it will reveal that now is seeing privacy as an issue. With the three dimensional view of CDA, the result obtained is that critiques arise for this ‘crisis of privacy’ as a consequence of lacking privacy by people outside Soviet

    STREET ART IN CAIRO AS A MEANS OF POLITICAL RESISTANCE EMPLOYED TO RESIST EGYPT’S MILITARY GOVERNMENT (2011-2012)

    This article discussed street art in Cairo after the Arab Spring ( العربي الربيع ). Revolution took place on Januari 25. 2011 when Egypt was led by the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces (SCAF). This paper was aimed at elaborating how street art in Cairo served as a means of political resistance employed to resist SCAF military government. This study employed a descriptive-qualitative method, Jenkins’s (2009) participatory culture theory and Peteet’s (1996) art as a means of political resistance. This study found out that, in general, street art or graffiti in Cairo during SCAF military government era emerged in the forms of stencil and mural works. In that era, street art served as a means of political resistance employed for various purposes such as criticizing the regime, telling stories of what was going on, depicting violence and murders committed by the security forces, commemorating martyrs of the revolution and telling stories of struggle, oppression and sexual harassment towards Egyptian women, Street art offered opportunities to the community to participate there so as to express their aspirations and make Cairo’s streets and walls public space for ‘a participatory culture’. Graffiti or street art found in Cairo served as a means of political resistance. Most of the murals on the walls depicted chaotic situations of that era, commemorated events and martyrs of the revolution, and commented on the social and political situations sharply.KEYWORDS: Street Art, Cairo, Arab Spring, Supreme Council of the Armed Force
