REDUCING CRIME THROUGH THE THEATRE: AN ANALYSIS OF FOLUKE OGUNLEYE’S JABULILE
Full text linkThis study examines the connection between family conditions and the criminal behaviours of children. Over the years, drama has been used to address the socio-political, economic and security challenges in different societies. The goal of these dramatists is to chart the way forward for a harmonious political, economic and social system. It is in this wise that, Foluke Ogunleye used her knowledge of drama to address serious issues affecting the progress and stability of the nation. This study finds that the explosion of crime in the nation is linked to the fragile family system surrounding the children’s upbringing by their respective families. This paper analyzes one of Foluke Ogunleye’s plays, Jabulile in an attempt to educate Nigerian families on what is expected of them as far as the issue of national security is concerned. This is done with the recognition that the family is the first unit of socialization. This study recommends that proper socialization of children by their parents is therefore a stepping stone for a harmonious socio-political system
AN ANALYSIS ON K-POP FANDOM SLANG WORD-FORMATION IN THE DRAMA ‘HER PRIVATE LIFE’
Full text linkSlang is a language that is used daily and continues to grow due to the development of social media among fan communities. Each fan community has used slang specific to their interests, one of them being the K-Pop fandom. Despite the international growth of the K-Pop fandom and the spread of its cultural influence over recent years, there has been a lack of discussion on the linguistic aspect of its community, on the slang generated and used by its fan community in particular. Therefore, this research aims to expound on how K-Pop fandom slang words found in the drama ‘Her Private Life’ are formed. The study based its theoretical framework on the National Institute of Korean Language’s (2014) classification of new words in Korean based on its wordformation process. Out of the 24 slang words analyzed from the drama ‘Her Private Life’, there are 3 slang words in the form of a single word and 21 slang words in the form of a complex word. In the case of single-word form slang words, all 3 are created through the borrowing process; while complex-word form slang words are mostly created through the blending process, equating to 9 words in total
POLITICAL RHETORIC RELATED TO IMMIGRATION IN THE 2017 FRENCH PRESIDENTIAL CAMPAIGN
Full text linkThis article discusses the political rhetoric regarding immigration and the presence of immigrants declared by the French presidential candidates in the 2017 French presidential election. The issue of immigration is one of the most important aspects of French domestic and foreign policy. The purpose of this study is to determine the perceptions and acceptance of immigrants from the 2017 French presidential candidates, and their impact on the French public. The theory used in this research is Norman Fairclough's three-dimensional models, namely the microstructural, mesostructural, and macrostructural dimensions. The data taken is the first source in the form of newspapers, online media, books, and journal articles. The results of this study indicate that the political rhetoric by presidential candidates in the 2017 French presidential election campaign forms its own identity and acceptance of immigrants in the French public view. Five French presidential candidates presented rhetoric related to immigration and the existence of immigrants with different framing according to the party ideology they adhere to. However, the rhetoric presented by presidential candidate Macron from En Marche! is more acceptable to French society than other presidential candidates
TRAVEL, GRIEF AND FIGHT: COMPUTATIONAL TRACING OF FEMALE WORKS IN THE DUTCH EAST INDIES LITERATURE
Full text linkIn the canon of the Dutch Indies literature, the works of female writers are sometimes overlooked. Mainly when it appears in the early period of the Dutch colonial period, the central issue and genre in most of the literary works are frequently written by male authors through a masculine colonial perspective. This paper explores the works of female authors in the period of the Dutch East Indies (1800-1942) using two computational tools. The aim is to examine the most common themes that are appeared in the female authors' works throughout this long period. Using two computational tools, Stylo and Antconc, this paper reveals genre closeness and the most common themes that are appeared in twelve Dutch East Indies female novels which are collected from dbnl.org. Based on the cluster analysis, this paper divides the novels into four different clusters. More over the computational analysis also shows the three main themes; exploration, disadvantages of being a repressed group, and fighting against the oppressed. The use of extensive digital data in this research gives an alternative for literary researchers to find an alternative way of doing their research during this pandemic time, which makes the physical visit to the library limited. It also gives an alternative in the literature field to combine this discipline with computational tools.KEYWORDS: Indies literature, female literature, computational literary studies, digital humanities
GLOBALISATION AND THE QUESTION OF LOYALTY IN AFRICA: A PHILOSOPHICAL REFLECTION
Full text linkThe focus of this study is on the influence of globalisation on the patriotic loyalty of Africans to Africa. Existing discourse is quite thin regarding the relationship between globalisation and loyalty in Africa. Yet, examining such relationship is important to understand the dearth of desirable development in many African states. Taking a philosophical approach, the contention in this study is that patriotic loyalty, which is significant for development in Africa, has been distorted by the influx of globalisation into Africa. The study historically highlights how globalisation influences diversion of loyalty from the immediate community to the global community. While the purpose of the study is not to encourage disloyalty to the global community, the emphasis, however, is that loyalty to the global community should not be to the detriment of local ties. Among other things, it is argued that such could result in detachment from core norms and values and the weakening of local ties which are necessary for sustainable development at the local levels. The study acknowledges the impossibility of reverting Africa to a pre-globalised period and concludes with some suggestions for developing, encouraging and sustaining loyalty in the continent.KEYWORDS: Africa, Development, Globalisation, Loyalty, Philosophy
WOLIO FORTRESS, BUTON : BETWEEN ITS DEFENSE AND SYMBOLIC FUNCTIONS
Full text linkWolio Fortress is a heritage of Buton Sultanate that functioned as its centre of government and capital city. Several researchers who conducted research on Wolio Fortress did not discuss its defense and symbolic aspects, leaving a knowledge gap in them. Therefore, the discussion of Wolio Fortress should be broadened. It is now thought that a fortress may provide information not only on its function as a defense facility, but also on the social, political, economic, and ideological life when it was being built.The research methodology consisted of three stages, i.e. data collection, data processing, and data interpretation. Data were collected by describing Wolio fortress in terms of its materials, shapes, and sizes, including relicts in the fortress. The collected data were processed by identifying and classifying them into data related to the fortress’s defense function and its symbolic function. The data interpretation was conducted by synthesizing archaeological and historical data. Results of the research show that besides its main function as a defense fortress, Wolio Fortress had a symbolic function. The defense function refers to the concept of the defense of Buton Sultanate, the key parts of the fortress, i.e. its bastions and cannons, and its strategic position from the defense point of view. The symbolic function encompasses ideological indoctrination through the fortress’s plan, its function as a city landmark, its function as the border between the nobles and the lower class’ settlements, and its sturdiness and greatness representing the military power and economic prosperity of the sultanate.KEYWORDS: Wolio Fortress, Defense Function, Symbolic Functio

Full text linkFashion and history cannot be separated, because fashion is one indicator of a change in culture, civilization, behavior, and certain identities. Vice versa, changes and developments in fashion are influenced by conditions at the time the fashion is developing, both the social, cultural, political, religious, economic and others. Fashion that is developing in Indonesia is Muslim fashion. One part of Muslim clothing is the hijab, headgear worn by Muslim women. Hijab is not only part of religious observance, hijab is already part of fashion and we can examine the hijab style of a society from its historical period. We can analyze the effects that occurred at that time.This writing will focus on how the hijab style during the struggle for independence, especially the Indonesian female heroes. How their hijab style is greatly influenced by the situation, conditions and even their role in the struggle for Indonesian independence. Hijab style at that time, of course, there are differences with the hijab worn at the present time. Even at that time every Indonesian heroine had a unique hijab style in accordance with their respective character and culture. This is very interesting to be appointed as a study, where the hijab is also part of their identity as Muslim warriors who are not afraid of invading the invaders, and also their role in fighting for the dignity of women at that time
BLOCKING AND EXTENDED EXPONENCE OF SUFFIX PRONOUNS IN ARABIC PERFECTIVE VERB CONJUGATION
Full text linkNoyer (1997) utilized blocking and extended exponence to encode pronouns in the conjugation of imperfect verbs in Arabic. His findings were criticized by Stump (2001) and Xu (2010), because the formulation was considered too complex. Xu (2010) offered a unified integrated account based on Optimality Theory while still relying on blocking and extended exponence. However, their for-mulation only focuses on the pronouns of imperfect verb conjugations. So far, the optimality of conjugations of perfective Arabic verbs which are also complex in nature, have not been considered yet in their studies. This study extends the work of Xu (2010) by developing the formulation of the optimal forms of the suffix pronouns of the Arabic perfective verb conjugations. CONCEPTUAL FOUNDATIONS OF LIBRARY AND INFORMATION SCIENCES: SOCIAL EPISTEMOLOGY OR PHILOSOPHY OF INFORMATION?
Full text linkThis article reviews the shift in the theoretical foundations of library and information science (LIS) on social epistemology to the philosophy of information. This shift bids have been submitted more than a decade ago where Luciano Floridi sees that the LIS has close relations with the philosophy of information. Paul Ricoeur's Hermeneutics Phenomenology used to understand and interpret Jesse Shera and Luciano Floridi’s texts and to reveal the implicit and hidden meanings in the text. This reading indicates that the LIS is a discipline that not only deals with knowledge alone but rather takes care of the content that we understand as meaningful data. With that also, we understand the information not only as a matter of semantic and regarded as an epistemic prerequisite for the establishment of knowledge. However, beyond that, the information is placed as the ontological. Meaning of information, then, becomes important for LIS to place in the appropriate position. The foundation on the philosophy of information can break the chain of LIS dependence on another field theory and develop his theory. Therefore, this foundation does not only contribute praxis to produce solutions to technical problems that are commonly done regarding the improvement and development of library services. MUZIL AL-MAJNUN FI RADD TASFIYAT AL-ẒUNUN BY MAMA SEMPUR: MOSLEM PURITANISM IN REVIEW
Full text linkThe development of the purification Islamic teachings idea and the Islamic reform that occurred in the Sundanese level, early 20th century, has always been responded loudly and decisively by traditional ulama. This uncompromising attitude is based on the spirit of maintaining the traditional Islamic doctrine that develops in society from the Moslem puritanism. This concept has two directions, which carry out the idea of purifying Islamic teachings and appear as a reformer movement. This study aims to identify the response of traditional scholars to the Moslem puritanism. This study focuses on the effort of exploring the Islamic intellectual treasures which are contained in Muzīl al-Majnūn fī Radd Taṣfiyat al-Ẓunūn, the Sundanese manuscript by Mama Sempur which contains traditional ulama responses to the development of Islamic puritanism in the Sundanese level. The author uses two approaches: the philological approach and intellectual social history to read and to understand various thought discourses which are contained in the manuscript. This study concludes that Mama Sempur's negative assessment of the Moslem puritanism was feared that it would erode the traditional Islamic doctrine that had developed in the community
