Effect of Soil Amendments, Variety and Irrigation Interval on Soil Properties and Yield of Sugarcane of a Salt-Affected Soil At Assalaya Sugar Scheme, Sudan
An experiment was conducted during February 1993 at Assalaya
Sugar Scheme (Sudan), to study the effects of soil amendments, irrigation intervals and cane varieties on some physical and chemical properties of a salt-affected soil as well as yield of sugarcane. The experimental design was a split-split plot with three replications. Application of four tonnes/ha of a combination of filtermud and bagasse significantly increased soil moisture content compared to that
of other amendments. Soil amendments decreased ESP and increased
saturation percentage which in turn decreased ECe and SAR especially under 10 day irrigation interval. The highest cane yield ( 158.8 t ha-1 ( was obtained by the addition of filtermud and bagasse. Variety C06806 with a mean cane yield of 146.6 t ha-l outyielded C0527 by about 27%, and the 10 day irrigation interval produced about 25% more cane than that of the 15 day irrigation interval. C06806 is suggested to be grown under the amendment of four tonnes/ha of filtermud and bagasse and irrigation interval of 10 days to give the highest cane yield in the salt-affected soil at Assalaya Sugar Scheme
Effect of adenine sulfate, benzylaminopurine and media forms on propagation of banana (Musa AAA) cv. Gros Michel and plantain (Musa ABB) cv. Cardaba
This study was initiated to test the effect of adenine sulfate, benzylaminopurine (BAP) and media forms on in vitro morphogenesis of banana cv. Gros Michel and plantain cv; Cardaba during the period January, 2001 to May, 2002. The number of plantlets per explant increased significantly on both cultivars cultured on liquid prop- agation medium with filter paper bridge compared to other forms of media. However, the percentage of explants with shoot regeneration was comparable on all treatments. Comparable percentage of shoot tip explants with shoots were induced from cv. Gros Michel culture on different concentrations of adenine sulfate and the propagation medium which represented the control. However, the number of shoots per explant decreased significantly except that on 100mg/l which was comparable with the propagation medium. The percentage of explants with roots and number of roots per explant increased significantly on cv. Gros Michel on adenine sulfate compared with the propagation medium. The different concentrations of adenine sulfate induced comparable percentage of explants with roots and shoots on cv. Cardaba. However, the number of explants with shoots induced on Cardaba decreased significantly when adenine sulfate was added to the propagation medium and the number of roots per explant increased significantly compared with the control. Benzylaminopurine induced similar percentages of explants with shoot regeneration on cvs. Gros Michel and Cardaba. Significantly higher number of shoots per explants of banana cv. Gros Michel was induced on mediun supplemented with BAP at 5 or 7.5 mg/l. However, the highest nurnber of shoots regenerated from plantain cv. Cardaba was induced
by higher concentrations of BAP (7.5 and 10.0 mg/l). There were genotypic differences in the response of the two cultivars to BAP.

Effect of Irrigation Interval on Yield and Yield Components of Two Sugarcane Cultivars Grown at Kenana Sugar Scheme, Sudan
Field experiments were conducted during 2000/2001 and 2001/2002 at Kenana Sugar Scheme, Sudan ( latitude 13010' N and longitude 320 40' E) in heavy clay soils, with 65 % clay, 24% silt, sand and a pH of 7.5-8.5. The objective of the study was to investigate the effects of irrigation intervals (7, 12 and 17 days) on yield and yield components of two sugarcane cultivars: Co 6806 and Co 997. In both experiments, the irrigation treatments were applied three months after sowing. The reference evapotranspiration for Kenana Sugar Scheme was computed using Penman-Monteith approach. The amount of water required for irrigating sugarcane plants was calculated. The results showed that the longest irrigation interval (17 days) led to a decreased cane yield and irrigation water use efficiency, whereas the best cane yield and water use efficiency resulted when irrigating every 12 days followed by every 7 days. The response of the two cultivars was similar under most treatments. However, the cultivar Co 6806 significantly outyielded Co 997 only at 17 days irrigation interval.

Genotype by environment interaction and stability analyses of grain yield of selected maize (Zea mays L.) genotypes in eastern and central Sudan
In this study, 22 open pollinated maize genotypes introduced from International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center (CIMMYT) and International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) plus two local checks (Var113, Hudieba-2) were evaluated over two seasons (2017 and 2018) and four locations, viz. New Halfa, Kassala, Gezira and Elsuki Research Station farms of the Agricultural Research Corporation (ARC) of the Sudan. The objectives of this study were to determine magnitude of G x E interaction and identify high yielding and stable genotypes under different environments. Treatments were arranged in a randomized complete block design with three replicates. Combined analysis of variance revealed highly significant (P<0.01) variation among environment, genotype, and genotype by environment interaction (GEI). This is an indication of inconsistency of genotypes in response to changing environment, the high influence of environment on yield performance among the maize genotypes and, also, the significant effect of environments indicated that the testing environments were significantly different from each other in yielding potential expression. AMMI analysis of variance for grain yield showed the environment contribution by (24.06%) of the total yield variation and genotypes explained only (9.84%) of the variation. Also, substantial percentage of G x E interaction sum of squares, explained by G x E (50.41%) followed by IPCAI (19.22%) and IPCA2 (15.52%) of the variation. Based on grain yield potential and statistical stability analyses, i.e. Eberhart and Russel model (1966) as well as the additive main effect and multiplicative interaction (AMMI) analysis, revealed that, the genotypes TZBR Eld-4-WC1, BR9922-DMRSR,TZBR Comp1-w, TZBR Comp1-Y and TZBR YPOP STRCY were recommended for the high yielding favourable supplementary irrigation condition (over 3000 kg/ha) of New Halfa, Gezira and Elsuki while the genotypes TZBREld-3C5, TZBREld-4-WC1, HYDERAB, 97502 (RE) and ECA STRIGOFE-153 were recommended for the unfavourable low yielding (less than 1500 kg/ha) rainfed condition of Kassala
Growth performance of two lemon [Citrus limon (L.) Osbeck] cultivars budded on three rootstocks, Gezira State, Sudan
Lemon [Citrus limon (L.) Osbeck ], family Rutaceae, is one of the world's major fruit crops with global popularity contributing to human diets. Lemon rootstocks and scion cultivars play an important role in the rapid development of citrus in the world. This study was conducted to evaluate the growth performance of two lemon cultivars budded on three rootstocks under Gezira State conditions, Sudan. The experiment was conducted in the nursery of the Department of Horticultural Sciences, Faculty of Agricultural Sciences, University of Gezira, Wad Medani, Sudan, in 2017.Volcamariana, Rough Lemon and Macrophylla rootstocks were grafted with buds of Eureka and Teresa cultivars. The T- budding technique was used in this study. Treatments were arranged in a randomized complete block design with three replicates. Parameters measured were rootstock height and thickness, height of scion, number of branches, length of branches and stem circumference of the scion. The parameters were recorded for 10 months. Rootstocks were significantly different in their vegetative growth. Rough Lemon rootstock resulted in the best vegetative growth. However, there were no significant differences in growth parameters between Volkameriana and Macrophylla rootstocks. Lemon cultivars were highly significantly different in their vegetative performance. Teresa lemon cultivar resulted in the largest plant height (73.9 cm), number of branches (27), length of branches (68 cm) and stem circumference (11.8 cm). The interaction effects of rootstocks and cultivars on vegetative performance of lemon were significant. The largest plant height (84.33 cm), number of branches (31.7), length of branches (75.7 cm) and stem circumference (12.3 cm) were obtained by Teresa cultivar budded on Rough Lemon rootstock and the smallest parameters were obtained by Eureka cultivar budded on Volkameriana, whereas the smallest length of branches (55.3) and stem circumference (9.5 cm) were obtained by Eureka cultivar budded on Macrophylla. Depending on the results of this study, it is recommended to bud the lemon cultivar Teresa on Rough Lemon rootstock under Gezira State Conditions, to obtain the best growth performance
Response of aerobic rice (Oryza sativa L.) to seed rate and inter-row spacing, Gezira State, Sudan
Field experiments were conducted for two consecutive seasons (2013/14 and 2014/15) at the Gezira Research Station Farm, Wad Medani, Sudan under irrigation condition. A randomized complete block design with four replicates was used. Treatments were arranged in a factorial combination of four inter-row spacing (15, 20, 25 and 30 cm) and five seed rates (59, 71, 83, 95 and 107 kg/ha). Data collected consisted of growth attributes, grain yield and yield components. Data collected were subjected to standard analysis of variance procedure. The results showed that seed rate, inter-row spacing and their interaction exhibited highly significant differences in grain yield and yield components. The highest grain yield was obtained by the seed rate of 95 kg/ha and 15 cm inter-row spacing in both seasons and the combined analysis. To obtain high grain yield of aerobic rice under Gezira conditions, 95 kg/ha seed rate and inter-row spacing of 15 cm is recommended to be used
Effect of tillage system and spacing on growth and yield of sugar beet (Beta vulgaris L.), Kassala State, Sudan
Field experiments were conducted during 2011- 2013 in Kassala Agricultural Research Station to study the effect of different tillage operations, inter and intra-row spacing, on growth and yield of sugar beet. The experimental design was a split-split-plot design, with three replicates. The treatments used were tillage system (ploughing and harrowing) as the main plot , row spacing (60, 80 and 100 cm) as the sub-plot and intra-row spacing (10, 20 and 30 cm) as the sub-sub-plot. Statistical analysis revealed no significant difference between tillage operations on soil clod size distribution. The treatments disc harrow, inter-row spacing of 60cm, intra-row of 20 cm had highly significant (P≤0.001) effect on yield in both seasons. Based on the results of this study, it is recommended to use disc harrow for land preparation and plant sugar beet at an inter and intra- row spacing of 60 and 20 cm
