CIVICA is a European university network focused on the social sciences. Based on the experiences of ten partner institutions, the report outlines the rationale, governance, benefits and challenges of establishing a cross-border library network. It demonstrates how libraries can enhance their strategic relevance, improve their services and promote professional development through structured cooperation. The report provides practical insights and recommendations for integrating libraries into transnational academic alliances, emphasising the need for greater international engagement by academic libraries

Zum Status quo der Open-Access-Transformation in der Bildungsforschung: Eine Analyse einschlägiger Zeitschriften aus Deutschland, Österreich und der Schweiz
No full textIn diesem Artikel wird der Stand der Open-Access-Transformation relevanter Kernzeitschriften der Bildungsforschung mit Verlagssitz in Deutschland, Österreich und Schweiz untersucht. Die Auswahl der Verlagsstandorte in den drei deutschsprachigen Ländern ergibt sich aus der Publikationskultur der transdisziplinären Bildungsforschung mit ihrem spezifischen lokalen Bezug. Grundlage der Untersuchung ist eine Auswahl von 43 Kernzeitschriften aus den in der Fachinformationssystem (FIS)-Bildung Literaturdatenbank indexierten und erschlossenen Zeitschriften. Die Wirksamkeit der verschiedenen Open-Access-Angebote für die untersuchten Zeitschriften wird analysiert, indem Angebote und Finanzierungsmodelle für das Open-Access-Publizieren seitens der Verlage und die tatsächliche Verfügbarkeit von Artikeln als Open-Access-Erst- und Zweitveröffentlichungen untersucht werden. Die Ergebnisse der untersuchten Kernzeitschriften zeigen für den gewählten Untersuchungszeitraum (2017 bis 2021) deutliche Fortschritte bei der Transformation zu Open Access. Allerdings werden diese nicht bei allen Zeitschriften gleichermaßen erreicht. Zudem besteht bei auf Article Processing Charges-basierten Open-Access-Angeboten der internationalen Großverlage die Gefahr, dass gegenüber dem Subskriptionsmodell Kostensteigerungen eintreten können. Um den weiteren Ausbau einer disziplinspezifischen Open-Access-Publikationskultur in der Bildungsforschung voranzutreiben, sollten die bisherigen Akteure Bibliotheken, Verlage und Förderorganisationen die Fachgesellschaften stärker einbeziehen.This article analyses the status of the Open Access transformation of relevant core journals in educational research with publishing locations in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. The choice of publishing locations in the three German-speaking countries is based on the publication culture of transdisciplinary educational research with its specific local focus. The study is based on a selection of 43 core journals from the journals indexed and catalogued in the FIS-Bildung literature database (German Education Index). The effectiveness of the various Open Access options for the journals is analysed by examining the publishers\u27 offers and financing models for Open Access publishing and the actual availability of articles as genuine or self-archived Open Access publications. The results of the core journals analysed show considerable progress in the transformation to Open Access for the selected study period (2017 to 2021). However, not all journals have achieved this to the same extent. In addition, there is a risk that APC-based Open Access options from major international publishers could lead to cost increases compared to the subscription model. In order to promote the further development of a discipline-specific Open Access publication culture in educational research, the existing players, i.e. libraries, publishers and funding organizations, should involve scientific societies more closely

Full text linkDie Meinungen zu den Open-Access-Verlagen MDPI, Frontiers und vormals Hindawi gehen auseinander. Von einigen werden sie gelobt für ihre effizienten Prozesse und ein niederschwelliges Publikationsangebot, andere bemängeln geringe Qualitätsstandards und fragwürdige Geschäftspraktiken, deren Ziel allein die Steigerung von Artikelzahlen sei. Die vorliegende Untersuchung unternimmt den Versuch einer Einordnung dieser Verlage anhand zahlreicher Quellen und eigener Analysen.Opinions about the Open Access publishers MDPI, Frontiers and formerly Hindawi vary. Some praise them for their efficient processes and low-threshold options for publication, while others criticize their low-quality standards and questionable business practices and argue that their sole aim is to increase the number of articles published. This study attempts to characterize these publishers on the basis of numerous sources and the author’s own analyses
