Integration of Health Information Systems in Developing Countries: A Systematic Review of Quality, Performance, and Competency Evaluation

    No full text
Persistent challenges in health workforce planning, distribution, and performance management remain prevalent in developing countries, largely due to fragmented and underutilized human resource data systems. Human Resource Information Systems (HRIS) have emerged as a strategic tool to support evidence-based decision-making and strengthen health workforce governance. This Systematic Literature Review (SLR) synthesizes empirical evidence published between 2015 and 2024 on the role of HRIS in enhancing strategic health workforce management in developing countries, with the objectives of identifying key Information System (IS) evaluation models, examining the relationship between system quality and individual performance, exploring the integration of competency planning and Person–Job Fit (P–J Fit), and highlighting critical research gaps. A systematic review of 20 peer-reviewed studies was conducted following the PRISMA protocol, encompassing system design foundations, adoption processes, interoperability challenges, and workforce-related outcomes in healthcare settings. The findings indicate that HRIS functions as a strategic enabler for decentralized management, evidence-based workforce planning, and performance improvement; however, its effectiveness is constrained by persistent interoperability barriers, fragmented data architectures, and the absence of internationally standardized workforce data. In conclusion, maximizing the strategic value of HRIS requires a dual emphasis on data standardization and organizational readiness, while future research should integrate behavioral theories with IS success frameworks, assess long-term HRIS impacts, and foster international collaboration to establish unified health workforce data standards that support policy coherence and digital health transformation in the public sector

Background: Tuberculosis (TB) remains a contagious disease with high mortality rates worldwide, especially in developing countries like Indonesia, which is the second-largest contributor to TB cases after India. Objective: Analysis of factors associated with treatment outcome in pulmonary TB patients in public health centers at Gunungkidul Regency, D.I. Yogyakarta. Methods: An observational analytic study with a cross-sectional design was conducted on pulmonary TB patients in 30 public health centers, Gunungkidul Regency in 2020-2021. Inclusion criteria were age ≥15 years, and exclusion criteria were extrapulmonary TB patients and those who loss to follow-up the end of treatment. Secondary data were obtained from the Tuberculosis Information System TB 03 (SITB) of the Gunungkidul District Health Office. The research data were analyzed using chi-square test (bivariate) and logistic regression (multivariate). Results: A total of 272 pulmonary TB patients in 2020-2021, with the majority aged 45-54 years (22.8%), male (57%), new treatment category (96.3%), BTA/TCM positive (58.1%), had a history of DM (8.1%), and HIV positive status (0.8%). Logistic regression analysis showed that age (p<0.001) and bacteriological examination results (p=0.012) were significantly associated with treatment outcomes. However, gender, history of TB treatment, history of DM, and HIV status were not associated with treatment success. Conclusion: Age and bacteriological examination results (AFB/Xpert MTB) at the start of treatment contributed to the treatment success rate in pulmonary TB patients

The Relationship Between Dental Health Status and Quality of Life in the Elderly

    No full text
Older adults experience various physical and psychological changes as they age. One common physical change in the oral cavity is tooth loss caused by dental caries. Data from the 2018 National Basic Health Research show that the prevalence of tooth loss is 29% among individuals aged 55–64 years and 30.6% among those aged >65 years. This condition affects chewing, speaking, and swallowing functions, and may lead to anxiety that impacts the quality of life of older adults. However, studies examining the relationship between oral health status and quality of life at the community level, particularly in Sebalong Village, Pasuruan Regency, are still lacking. This study aimed to determine the relationship between oral health status based on the DMF-T index and the quality of life of older adults using the Geriatric Oral Health Assessment Index (GOHAI). This cross-sectional analytical study involved 38 respondents aged 60–74 years selected through simple random sampling. Inclusion criteria included older adults residing in Sebalong Village, willing to participate, and able to communicate well, while exclusion criteria consisted of those with severe cognitive impairment. Data were collected through dental health examinations and completion of the GOHAI questionnaire after obtaining ethical approval and informed consent. Data were analyzed using the Spearman Rank test. The results showed an average DMF-T score of 21.03 (high category), far above the WHO standard of <5.0 (very low category). Moreover, 68.4% of participants had poor quality of life. Statistical analysis revealed a p-value of 0.000 and a correlation coefficient of -0.862, indicating a very strong negative relationship between oral health status and quality of life. In conclusion, poorer oral health status is associated with lower quality of life among older adults. These findings highlight the importance of promotive–preventive programs and continuous oral health services for the elderly, as well as further research with larger samples and longitudinal designs

The Levels of DMF-T in Patients Visiting The Cardiology Clinic

    No full text
Oral health is closely related to systemic health, including heart disease, where dental caries measured by the DMF-T index (Decayed, Missing, Filled Teeth) can be one indicator of oral health status. This study aims to analyze the DMF-T index among patients visiting the Cardiology Clinic in Banjarbaru City. The research method used a quantitative descriptive approach with cluster random sampling. Data were collected through clinical oral examinations with DMF-T index recording according to WHO standards, then analyzed descriptively to obtain the average values of D, M, and F. The results showed that the average DMF-T score of patients was quite high at 6.7, with missing teeth being the most prevalent compared to decayed teeth and filled teeth. The DMF-T index also showed a higher tendency in elderly patients visiting the Cardiology Clinic. This finding indicates a relationship between the systemic condition of heart patients and their oral health status. In conclusion, heart disease patients in Banjarbaru City have a high DMF-T index, requiring special attention in oral health promotion and prevention efforts

    No full text
Oral hygiene problems remain a significant health challenge among elementary school children in Indonesia, one of which is measured using the Oral Hygiene Index Simplified (OHI-S). Dental health education using calendar media is considered effective in improving children\u27s understanding and practices related to oral hygiene. This study aimed to determine the effect of dental health education using calendar media on OHI-S scores among 5th-grade students at SDN 19 Pontianak Utara. A quasi-experimental design with a pre-test and post-test approach was employed involving 56 students selected through total sampling. OHI-S assessments were conducted before and after the three-week educational intervention. The results showed that only 2 students (3.6%) were categorized as having good OHI-S scores before the intervention, whereas after the intervention the number increased to 38 students (67.9%), indicating a significant improvement in oral hygiene. These findings demonstrate that calendar media can serve as an engaging and easy-to-understand educational tool that enhances children\u27s toothbrushing behavior. In conclusion, dental health education using calendar media is proven effective in reducing OHI-S scores and can be recommended as a supportive strategy for school-based oral health programs

    No full text
The high prevalence of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) requires serious attention not only from the government but also from all members of the community. Early signs and symptoms of NCDs are often overlooked by those affected, yet serious complications may arise if these conditions are not properly managed. This community service activity was conducted as a preventive strategy against NCDs through early detection, health education, and group exercise. The early detection included measurements of blood pressure, random blood glucose levels, cholesterol levels, uric acid levels, and body mass index. The results showed that the majority of participants had normal blood pressure and blood glucose levels. However, several participants were identified with prehypertension, hypertension, hyperglycemia, hyperlipidemia, elevated uric acid levels, and obesity. Health education was delivered in groups using posters, leaflets, and interactive discussions, complemented by collective physical exercise sessions. Post-education evaluations indicated an increase in participants’ understanding of NCD prevention. This community engagement activity highlights the importance of regular early detection and health education as effective measures to raise awareness and promote healthy behaviors in the community as part of an overall NCD prevention strateg

    No full text
Tuberculosis (TB) in children is a public health challenge that requires special attention, especially due to low levels of family compliance with treatment. This non-compliance risks treatment failure, recurrence, and drug resistance, which are dangerous for children. The role of the family as the primary caregiver is significant in ensuring optimal treatment. Swanson\u27s caring theory, which emphasizes empathy and emotional support, is considered capable of increasing family compliance in accompanying children during TB treatment. This study aims to determine the effectiveness of Swanson\u27s caring behavioral approach on TB treatment compliance in families with children suffering from TB at the Ende Regional General Hospital Pediatric Clinic. The method is quantitative, with a quasi-experimental design featuring a one-group pre-test and post-test design. A total of 30 families were selected using purposive sampling. The intervention was carried out for 12 days through the five dimensions of Swanson\u27s caring, namely maintaining belief, knowing, being with, doing for, and enabling. The measurement instrument uses the Morisky Medication Adherence Scale (MMAS-8) questionnaire to assess treatment adherence before and after the intervention. Data analysis used the Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test. The study showed a significant increase in the level of family adherence in providing TB treatment to children after the Swanson caring intervention (p < 0.05). The application of the Swanson caring behavioral approach was effective in increasing TB treatment adherence in children, so it can be recommended as a family-based intervention strategy to improve the success of TB therapy in children at health facilities

The Visual Inspection with Acetic Acid (IVA) test aims to diagnose early so that it can speed up treatment, reduce morbidity and mortality in women due to cervical cancer. IVA test coverage in Magelang district has not reached the target, especially in the at-risk group. The study aims to see the difference in utilization of IVA services in groups of mothers who are divided into at-risk and non-risk groups. The method used was quantitative method that uses a comparative design. The study population was all mothers aged 30-50 years in Magelang district. Respondents of each group were 68 people determined by proportional sampling technique. Univariate analysis with frequency distribution table and bivariate analysis with Mann-Whitney test because the data was not normally distributed. There was no difference in the utilization of IVA services between the at-risk and non-risk groups (p=0.205). However, it was statistically proven that the at-risk group had a better level of knowledge, attitude, and lifestyle, and felt more vulnerable and needed an IVA test than the non-risk group. Meanwhile, the non-risk group had better perceptions of accessibility and health worker support than the risk group. Risk factor mapping at the Health Center level needs to be done to develop needs-based interventions to increase IVA coverage
