Get PDFAccording to §1 of the Norwegian Cultural Heritage Act of 1978, cultural heritage must be protected as âscientific source material and as an enduring basis for the experience of present and future generations and for their self-awareness, enjoyment and activities.â The article presents a case study of a minor conflict over the protection of an automatically protected site located within a Norwegian farmerâs property in the vicinity of a museum. The study shows how not only different interests are at stake, but also how the actors differ in the perception of the site and in their relationship to the past. Applying the old contrast between history and tradition, we argue that archeological expertise in cultural heritage management might give a bias towards history and away from living tradition when sites are to be valuated and protected. In this respect, the management processes would benefit from interdisciplinary inputs and public participation in the broad sense, in which citizens are seen to hold relevant knowledge about the value of cultural heritage as a basis for self-awareness, enjoyment and activities

No full textHow food has been valued in Norwegian society is the topic of discussion in this article with the heading: âNorwegian food and food in Norway: citizenship, public health and sensuÂalityâ. In contrast to national symbols such as folk songs and folk stories, which were collected and valued as such as early as the 1850s, food gained a similar value as late as the Âsecond quarter of the 1900s. Hulda Garborg was the first one to acclaim that food grown on Norwegian land is both the best and the healthiest, in her book National kost (National Food) published in 1925. After World War II a nationwide collection of recipes was instigÂated by Norsk Bondekvinnelag (The Norwegian Association of Farm Women) to document Norwegian food. The result was published in the book Norsk mat (Norwegian Food). The archived material which is the basis of the book, shows a strict selection with regard to what is genuine Norwegian food (and drink). Recipes are excluded on grounds such as lack of age, inferior quality or lack of authenticity. The book propagates and consolidates, through its selection, the idea of genuine Norwegianness, an idea which has lived on and which is found in the criteria producers have to match to gain right to the etiquette âGodt Norskâ. Some of the main criteria are that the product has to be produced with ingredients grown on Norwegian soil and on livestock born and bred in Norway. The question of the foodâs âcitiÂzenshipâ is apparently of immense value and importance to the Norwegian public, and so is the question of health connected with food. However, during the last 20 years, sensuality has gained importance in the evaluation of food. Through media participants representing food organisations, farmersâ organisations and the general public have taken up the debate on whether Norwegian food products automatically are equivalent to tasty quality products or not

Get PDFThe theme of this article is love and reason in marriage negotiations in the 18th century. The relationship between love and reason is a recurrent problem in law and legal practice, as well as in comedies written by the Danish-Norwegian jurist, judge and playwright Ludvig Holberg. On the basis of these sources it is possible to outline how love was represented in the 18th century, and how a reordering of the relationship between love and reason transformed sexual and gender relations.âââIdeally, the making of marriage was guided by reason, not love. Therefore parents had to consent to marriage, taking economic and social factors into consideration. This does not mean that love and reason were thought in opposition to each other. Rather, a happy and harmonious marriage rested on rational considerations as well as mutual feelings. The idea was that a couple of the same economic and social standing, and with the right virtues and qualities would develop love in marriage. Irrational and impulsive emotions were seen as a dangerous force that could threaten order within the family, as well as the social order.âââIn practice, however, it was not easy to find a harmonious balance between the authority of parents and the freedom of young people. Was it legitimate for parents to force their children to marry a spouse of their choice? Was a daughter free to enter into a sexual relation before her parents had consented to marriage? At the beginning of the 18th century even a secret promise of marriage obliged a man to marry, but during this century the harmonious balance between love and reason shifted. New legal rules and romantic ideals questioned previous ideals of love as lasting and constant, a duty to be fulfilled. Even if parents continued to trust in reason, mutual emotions were assigned greater importance. These ideals made it more legitimate for men to pursue their inclinations, while women had to watch out so as not to be betrayed by their emotions and lead astray by promises

Cancer and Emotions â The Moment of Diagnosis and Metaphoric Transformation
No full textThe following article concentrates on the cancer patientsâ emotions and metaphor-like expressions employed in Finnish cancer patientsâ written narratives. The aim is to analyse the significance of metaphors when they occur within cancer narratives to emphasise the internal and external transformations that follow the moment of cancer diagnosis. According to the materials analysed moment of cancer diagnosis may be interpreted as the most crucial in terms of the cancer experience, which for many cancer patients causes inner chaos and loss of the self. In recent discussions metaphors concerning illnesses and health have been interpreted as stigmatising markers in political, social, and cultural discourse. This article demonstrates how personal emotions become verbalised and expressed using metaphors, and how these metaphors function as a socioculturally bound key to comprehend and make comprehensible individual emotions

Mangfold og aktualitet kan derfor stå som motto for nummeret enten artiklene handler om klassereiser, miljø og forurensingsproblemer, om mannlige flyktninger i eksil eller hvordan kulturelt mangfold er blitt og blir presentert på museer. Sistnevnte bidrag tar opp tråden fra forrige nummer av tidsskiftet som hadde som tema kulturell ulikhet på museum. Det viser kanskje at tidsskriftet også er blitt et organ for museumsrelaterte problemstillinger
