No full textThis article deals with the concept of âfriendshipâ. We still carry with us a rather elevated style of speech and romantic notions on friendship that can be traced back to both Aristotleâs ideas on friendship and the emotional and romantic language that increased during Romanticism. Aristotle differentiated between friendship for lust and pleasure, friendship for benefit and utility, and the good friendship which can be seen as the most elevated kind of friendship. Does this influence limit how we think of and practice friendships today? How is friendship experienced among children and youth today, and are contemporary arenas, like the internet, of importance for entering and exploring friendships and interpersonal relations? Are there new and perhaps extended limits for how intimacy can be explored within frames of friendships? The article seeks to shed light on the fact that friendships also imply power, inclusion, exclusion, experiences of not only joy, but also loss and fraud. The article ends up by posing new questions on the concept of friendship. The author argues that friendships may be studied as processes and production of subjectivity where people engage in relations that will not fit into Aristotelian and Romantic ideas of friendship, but that nevertheless satisfy new forms of friendship in late modernity

Get PDFIn 1755 Lisbon was hit by an earthquake that almost completely leveled the city. The news of the catastrophe spread rapidly and the earthquake was soon discussed throughout Europe. Today the Lisbon earthquake is first and foremost known through the works of Voltaire and his discussions on the theodicy. However, the dominating European understanding was that the quake was caused by the wrath of God. The catastrophe was described in terms of exemplarity, and was interpreted as a god-given token. By a close reading of one the Danish poems about the quake, Christian Henric Bierings poetiske Tanker Over Lissabons Ãdeleggelse ved det uhørlige Jordskiælv paa Alle helgens Dag 1755, the article examines how the earthquake was framed as an example. By the use of examples, the poem argues for an understanding of the catastrophe as an omen predicting an imminent doomsday. By reading Bieringâs poem, the article explores the relationship between the early modern way of thought by the usage of examples and the readings and interpretations of omens

Get PDFThe article explores the naval raid of the Slavic forces on the coastal Norwegian port settlement of Konungahella in the mid 1130s. The paper analyses the raid in the context of regional politics and from the perspective of Baltic Slavs. It also encompasses the wider political context of contemporary imperial and Polish politics. It addresses the issue of the timing of the raid, participation of other than Pomeranian Slavs, and the reasons why it took place. It focuses on the reasons behind the raid which are surrounded by controversy and various interpretations. The paper postulates an alternative explanation to the politically motivated explanations previously accepted

No full textThis article is an attempt at a reinterpretation of the religious meaning of the iconoclastic conflicts in Bergen 1568-1572. The basic hypothesis is that the superintendent (or bishop) Jens Skielderup understood the stripping of the altars as part of a theological programme to introduce the so-called Calvinist âSecond Reformationâ in Denmark-Norway. He tried to defend his position in a small dialogue between a priest and a peasant published in Copenhagen in 1572. In Skielderupâs dialogue the peasant comes up with more traditional Lutheran arguments, while the priest defends a moderate Calvinist position. In Bergen the Lutheran point of view was strongly advocated by the humanist scholar Absalon Pederssøn Beyer. Skielderupâs little book reflects not only the conflict between the bishop and the city council, but also a conflict within the clergy in Bergen. The iconoclastic episode in Bergen was probably part of a more extensive theological conflict within the Lutheran church of Denmark-Norway in the second half of the sixteenth century

Jeg tenker ikke så mye på manglende ressurser til vedlikehold av bygninger eller faglig kompetanseutvikling, som rett og slett på vår rolle som meningsprodusenter. For det første snakkes det ofte om en legitimitetskrise. Siden museene er kunnskapsinstitusjoner som også selger seg til reiseliv, aktivitetsdager for barn, jubileer og politiske pølsefester, stoler vi ikke lenger på museene, i alle fall kan det hende vi vil slutte med det. For det andre hører vi om en representasjonskrise, ikke bare når det snakkes om de store museumssamlingene som er bygget opp etter foreldete og tilfeldige representativitetskriterier. Vel så mye handler representasjonsproblematikken om museumsutstillingen, der museene viser frem noen gjenstander som representative for andre gjenstander, for mennesker eller kulturfenomener, uten at forholdet mellom gjenstanden og det den er ment å representere alltid virker gjennomtenkt. Alternativt stiller vi ut gjenstander og bygninger som uttrykk for mer metafysiske, essensialistiske forestillinÂger om fortidens mystiske nærvær, noe som ofte virker mer uutgrunnelig og uangripelig

Get PDFThis article concerns everyday narratives about monuments in local communities. The material used is collected through Norsk Etnologisk Gransking. The narratives demonstrate that a monument in most cases is connected to war memorials, especially those related to the 2nd World War. The narratives also show great local variation connected to the  monuments that are related to the national history, stories about the 2nd World War present local diversity, sometimes in opposition to the national one.  We also learn that a monument, although representing a memory from the past, must talk to the present in order to be remembered, and that a monument consists of the stone, the narratives and rituals connected to it

Get PDFThe use of water in healing and curing has existed from the age of antiquity. Both water from mineral springs and ocean water have been used in many cultures around the world. During the last few years, a wave of spa treatments has swept over us, also in Norway. Hotel spa is a spa located within a hotel environment that provides guests with a variety of health and healing services, and gives opportunities for health enhancement and lifeÂstyle improvement, stress reduction, well-being and relaxation. Thalassic therapy is healing by using ocean water and the beneficial qualities of a marine environment. The treatments are presented as both preventive and curing. This article examines some aspects of Selje Spa Thalasso, the only thalassic centre in Scandinavia. The centre is located by the Stadt Sea, at the edge of Selje beach in a âunique sacred landscapeâ. I am presenting some of the thalassic treatments offered and categories of guests who are supposed to be typical. The centre is based on a holistic view of health, characterized by âThe good circleâ, ideas that also exist within the alternative health movement. The article is also offering some reflections on Selje Spa Thalasso as a cathedral of health and well-being. At last some comments are related to the spa-wave in a Norwegian contemporary cultural and health policy context
