Marianne Gullestad, 2002.
Through a period of 20 years, from 1950 to 1970, Yngvar Mejland documented material and immaterial culture in North-Troms and Finnmark where the dominating population was and still is SÃ mi and Kven (of Finnish origin). He had a good command of their languages in addition to Norwegian and for that reason he was for 10 years annually granted travel finances from Norsk etnologisk gransking (NEG), Norges allmennvitenskapelige forskningsråd and Norges kulturråd. This article brings to light one of NEGs prominent informants, Yngvar Mejland, his method of fieldwork and the vast amount of material now in possession of NEG. It is a material exceptional for at least two reasons: it covers the pre-war region of Norway which was completely extinguished in 1944 in the scorched earth policy and it covers the culture and religion of the non-Norwegian population of this region. From his vast material the author focuses on some of his main interests: social effects of the religious movement læstadianism, belief and stories about ghosts, and the wise people. Shortly, Yngvar Mejlandâs ethics are discussed in comparison with research ethics of our own time
Kirurgiens nytte
In 1736, Theatrum Anatomico-Chirurgicum was established in Copenhagen as part of royal enlightenment effort to provide better surgical services to the Danish-Norwegian population. In 1990, the first laparoscopic cholecystectomi (removal of gallbladder with keyhole surgery) was performed at Gjøvik hospital in Oppland County. Both events are analyzed by foregrounding how surgery’s utility was enacted by a multitude of actors, human and non-humans, through different public-scientific practices. An original contri-bution of the article is the use of terminology from Science technology studies and Actor-network theory within history of surgery, and the article seeks to breathe new life into a subject that has formerly been looked at through other analytic lenses

Internet offers a range of new opportunities for the folklore archives. Through online publishing the archives make their collections of folklore records, answers of questionnaires, interviews etc. more easily accessible than ever before. More people can get access to the collections and new groups of potential users can be reached. In many cases the archives are also expected to give priority to put material online, both by the public, researchers and the governments. The methods for publishing folklore collections on Internet are discussed from a critical point of view. Ethical problems are treated, not least the need to relate to old promises not to spread the material, and also possible consequences of anonymousness and selection as methods for protecting individuals or groups who have contributed to or are mentioned in the material. The text also argues that online publishing folklore collections should not only be regarded as a method for making the material available. Through putting collections online the archives produce history and thus contribute to create intangible cultural heritage
Kulturforskjellenes orden og omstendigÂhetenes dans
The Ethnographic Museum of the University of Oslo (estbl. 1857) houses one of the four large Nordic ethnographic collections from the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Norwegian officers, sailors, lawyers and medical doctors were hired for colonial service in the Congo Freestate (1885-1908) and later Belgian Congo (1908-1960) and subsequently brought collections home to Norway. The article starts with a presentation of the Congo exhibitions from 1904 as the museum had moved into a new building âHistorisk Museumâ containing professor and director Yngvar Nielsenâs orderly cabinets displaying cultural differences based on geographical units and ethnicity. The homely order is contrasted with collection strategies in the Congo as part of larger colonial and cultural encounters. While the ideal for collecting may have been proto-scientific and linked to an emerging ethnographic discipline, the undertaking was rather akin to what Johannes Fabian has termed the dance of circumstances. Ethnographic collecting is depicted as tools and aids for navigating in and mapping of a complex colonial world, as well as contributing to a conception of style and form of objects representing different Congolese social groupings and ethnic boundaries â and at the same time serving as tropical hygiene: attempts towards preserving mental health and keeping up appearences as colonial officers

In the 18th century, field-work became an important part of antiquarian studies. The work was heavily influenced by new scientific ideals, seeing systematic observation as the most reliable path to true knowledge.Norwegian topographic literature from this period presents vicars, judges and other local civil servants eagerly collecting inscriptions, investigating bauta stones and tombs, and â not least â opening burial mounds. Their work may be analysed as an embryonic form of modern archeology, but the perspective of this article is rather to see it as an autonomous tradition of knowledge, with its own logic and its own intepretations.âââThis âantiquarian scienceâ treated antiquities as specimens, i.e.representatives of species. The antiquarian taxonomy resembled Linnéâs system of plants. Interpretations âââon the other hand still bore the marks of an older, literary tradition. Old Norse literature was a main key to understanding. The antiquarians looked for the tombs of kings and opened mounds to find the tools of heroes known from the sagas. Bible in hand, they also looked for remnants of the giants who once peopled the earth - and were disappointed: âNothing but the customary clay potsâ was a frequent report
Dataspill som kulturmøter i sosiale kontekster
Computer games are cultural expressions with great importance to young people. This article is based on participant observation to get contextual experiences in use and reading of games. The article is based on a discursive analysis of the use of two educational computer games in the teaching practice of students in teacher’s training. In what ways are the students and their pupils able to connect events in the games to forms of social organization in the classroom? The conclusions give evidence of a variety of social approaches to multi-modal texts, and will challenge totalizing formulations of experiences, which claim to speak for ”others” by way of collective concepts. The construction of meaning, it is argued, results from the interaction between acting and interpreting agents in contexts. Such interaction and the teacher`s position to handle this, provides the very basis for learning cultural content from computer games
