This article is based on fieldwork carried out among men working in a food and vegetable market in Stockholm. The focus is on oral and bodily practices in the market. My theoretical tools for the interpretations come from gender and post-colonial studies. Keywords are masculinities, practices, positions and situations. I have worked with and interviewed men to get their view of their encounters with people at the market. The examples in the article focus on male strategies and practices. The purpose of this study is to investigate how concepts such as gender, ethnicity, âwhiteâ and âblackâ masculinity are used and become relevant in these encounters
Kurt Braunmüller & Christoph Gabriel (eds.): Multilingual individuals and multilingual societies.
Multilingualism is a fundamental characteristic of modern society. As highlighted by the editors of the volume, Kurt Braunmüller and Christoph Gabriel, in contemporary reality multilingualism is far more prevalent than monolingualism on a global scale represented by a variety of phenomena like diglossia, plurilingualism or receptive bilingualism. Multilingualism has been studied by linguists, psychologists, educational professionals, and social scientists, all of whom have endeavored to generate the state-of-the-art scientific understanding that may disclose potential and challenges that multilingualism poses for the individual in the context of her family, school, other institutions, and society in general. Multilingual Individuals and Multilingual Societies is the thirteenth book volume published in the series Hamburg Studies on Multilingualism. The present book volume provides a multidimensional perspective on contemporary research in multilingualism with a special focus on individual and societal aspects of this phenomenon. The volume consists of 25 contributions organized into three thematic blocks: (1) the acquisition of multilingualism, (2) historical aspects of multilingualism and variance, and (3) multilingual communication. Each block addresses a variety of issues as they relate to language acquisition, language change and language use in multilingual settings
In the early history of museums the collection and study of curiosities became an independent scholarly project. Later the understanding of curiosity was transformed in such a way that it eventually came to stand for the opposite, viz., anything ridiculous and non-scientific. The aim of this article is to show how and why this transformation took place. Taking the learned Danish antiquarian, naturalist and physician Ole Worm (1588-1654) and his famous curiosity cabinet in Copenhagen as the point of departure, the story of the rise, fall and reinvention of the curious object in the history of museums will be unfolded. The story of curious objects involves not only an understanding of the historical references and traditions embodied in todayâs museum institution, but also the demonstration of the ability of contemporary museum culture to change, thus pointing to new ways of understanding the role of museum and collected objects
Liv Emma Thorsen, Hund!

Western Ideas about Elephants - a Commentary
An elephant is a strange creature. While at home in eastern and southern climatic zones, it also has a rich Western cultural history. This history, or more precisely Western ideas about elephants, is the theme of Nigel Rothfelsâs article. The author introduces the reader to an interesting history and not the least rich source material from the presentation of elephants in bestiaries (collections of animal fables) from the Middle Ages through French natural philosopher Comte de Buffonâs Histoire Naturelle (1749-1804) to controversial American photo artist Andres Serranoâs elephant pictures. What kind of elephant do we see in these and other presentations? Which contexts were they part of and what may they tell us today? These are among the questions asked by the author
A Zoo-logical Nature
In 2007 a new Africa-section opened in Kristiansand Zoo and Amusement Park, with four lions as the chief attraction. In the article the constructed Africa is analysed as a display of living nature. With nearly 700Â 000 annual visitors, the Zoo is a major contributor in the shaping of attitudes towards wildlife. A central concept in the analysis is the term zoo-logical nature, a term that is coined in an analytical intent to embrace different, often contradicting and paradoxical aspects of the Zoo enterprise. Business, profit, moral and love of nature interact with the strategically planned design of buildings, enclosures and landscapes, and the presentation of real and mediated animals. Together these aspects contribute in producing specific relations between the animals and humans, as well as morally acceptable positions for humans in wildlife. In Kristiansand Zoo you meet the lion as a mythical figure, as an individual with a fun personality as well as a specimen â and the mediated lions seem to interact with the real lion in such a way that the captivity is concealed. Instead the animals appear to be protected and free, and the visitors as caring and distanced. The Zoo, then, can be seen as a privileged site to study the meanings we ascribe to wildlife
Editorial
How has nature been put on display in different rooms and by different means â in museums, in private homes, by visual technologies or in textbooks? This was the point of departure for a seminar arranged by the project âNature and the Naturalâ in Oslo 24. October 2008. This issue of Tidsskrift for kulturforskning presents three of the papers given at the seminar. These articles elucidate museum displays of nature and nature transferred to the private home. The other two discuss respectively the display of nature in zoos and the display of nature as a text
