Speaking about disease: Provincialläkare Lars Montin and the inoculation of smallpox
Get PDFSmallpox inoculation gave an effective protection against this epidemic disease, and the new technique was heatedly debated during the entire eighteenth century. The question was not so much why it worked, as whether imposing illness on somebody meant setting oneself in God's place. Propagating inoculation also meant confronting popular beliefs about fate, illness and the reigning forces of the universe. Among the enlightened men taking on this task, we find the Swedish physician Lars Montin. His work supplies an example of how the new practice led to negotiations between different strands of knowÂledge and different traditions of belief. Montin's paper Anmerkninger ved den nye Koppodnings Maade was published in 1774 and is a comment on the English doctor Dimsdale's book from 1767. Montin's interest in inoculation can also be read out of the reports that he sent to Collegium Medicum in 1761 and 1765. In this way, Montin's paper is situated at a cross roads between two worlds. It reflects his own practice as a doctor in a rural region of Sweden and his experiences with its local culture. The issue arises out of an actual case: A building that was originally reconstructed at Norsk Folkemuseum in order to represent the early 19th century is about to be turned into a representation of the 1950s. This transformation means that the building has to be exposed to certain physical changes, which in turn raises several questions

Get PDFThe point of departure of this article is the Norwegian computer party The Gathering. For three years the author was doing field research investigating a sub-culture developed by the computer enthusiasts connected to this annual event, using observations, interviews and a comprehensive qualitative questionnaire. The focus of this article is on the attitudes held by the computer enthusiasts towards the computer competence of their parents, teachers, grandparents and elderly people in general. The statements made by the youth are compared to the answers to another questionnaire sent to elderly people concerning their own computer skills. âââThe article focuses on how hierarchical patterns between adults and adolescents are changed when children and young people have achieved skills in using digital media technologies which many adults do not master. The article gives an interesting view from the inside of the young computer enthusiastsâ experiences of themselves, their self-images and their images of elderly people. The author discusses the influence of the powerful âMyth of the Competent IT-Childâ on the views held by both young and old. In conclusion, the author claims that the high self esteeme â held by the young computer enthusiasts when it comes to digital competence â should be seen rather as a generational phenomenon than as a result of a life span experience, due to the fact that the generation growing up with the Internet has some historically unique experiences with digital technology

Get PDFTing er i tiden. Forholdet til tingene gir oss forankring og tilknytning til verden. De er med på å gi oss âlivâ. Indirekte gir tingene oss en pekepinn på hva slags liv mennesket lever, og muligens også hva det å leve er, i filosofisk forstand (Tveito 2005). Dette er kanskje en grunn til at Akershusmuseene døper sin artikkelsamling Ja, vi elsker ting! Tingene er museenes ryggrad og det som gjør mediet museum spesielt. Sett i lys av museenes arbeid med samtidsdokumentasjon de siste årene, har dette kanskje blitt litt underkommunisert. Ofte har tingene blitt skjøvet i bakgrunnen til fordel for andre typer materiale, eksempelvis intervjuer og fotografier. Derfor er det flott at Akershusmuseene her erklærer sin kjærlighet til gjenstandene. I denne anmeldelsen vil jeg forfølge de sterke følelsene ovenfor tingene

Get PDFIn 1761 the Swiss doctor S.A.D. Tissot published his book Avis au peple sur sa Santé, which was rapidly translated into a number of other European languages. The Danish version appeared in 1770. Even if the book was intended to help peasants in cases of illness, it did not address itself directly to them but rather to their superiors. Tissotâs book has been regarded as an early expression of ideas about public health care, because it discussed medicine in a social context. However, the social landscape he presents is very different from that of a modern welfare society. In a mercantilistic spirit, the common people is represented as an economic resource. The social aspect of medicine is above all to contribute to a good administration of this resource: A healthy population makes a wealthy state. Among the elements threatening this wealth is not only disease, but also its illegitimate healer: quack, mountebank and âwise peopleâ. The article presents a close reading of Tissotâs work, exploring the way he presents the problem of unauthorized healers and sets up their contrast: rational and learned medicine
