How does material culture act in the relation between nations? This is the main question in this article. The author wishes to uncover the changed roles the âVolkswagenâ has had during itâs time, both in the sense of symbol and by its materiality. Further the article describes what the âVolkswagenâ has done for the relations between Norway and Germany. Inspired by Bruno Latour and the âActor â Network-Theoryâ, where the materiality also has status as an actor, the article argues that the non-humanity has been neglected as an object of analyses of the relations between Norway and Germany. By the material function of the âFolkswagenâ and many peopleâs practical experiences with this car, Norwegians learned Germany to know for new after the Second World War

The article analyzes representations of Sámi culture in exhibitions and museums, as they have developed through history. Changing narratives and politics concerning the Sami can be identified, from the âVölkerschauâ with live Sami and reindeer at zoos and World Fairs, to the development of ethnographic collections and museums, and ending in present postcolonial reflections on the political consequences of the representing the âOtherâ. The colonial history of this field requires an ongoing reflection on how these exhibited narratives of the Sámi have been presented and told in specific contexts, and how they relate to other more generalized meta-narratives about indigenous people. The discussion tries to identify these narratives as they are told with the help of cultural objects in glass showcases, wax models in natural habitats, artificial dioramas in museums, and elaborated commentaries and texts. Exhibitors and museum professionals have not merely been descriptive in their work, but also interpretative. Current museum exhibitions about the Sámi must be understood in the light of the authority of earlier narratives, ethnographies, and politics of representation

We know that tears and weeping were important cultural signs in eighteenth century France. But what was the status of feelings and emotions within the Enlightenment thinking, in what we call the Age of Reason? The fin de siècle of the seventeenth century certainly brought new elements to the semantic field of feelings. Sensibilité was one of the notions that obtained a whole range of new, positive evaluations and functions, not at least as a social and moral category. When the notion of sensibility appears in different articles of the Encyclopédie (1751-1774), the main cleavage is between a âmoralâ and a âphysicalâ sensibility. In this article, I attempt to explore some of the dilemmas, contradictions and fruitful dynamics of the history of the notion of sensibility, as it can be established from reading the different articles on sensibilité in the Encyclopédie. It appears to be a notion that challenges age-old tensions as to the nature of man; it is mediating and blurring the distinctions between body and soul, sensation and emotion, inner and outer, between the subject and its physical and social environment. My main argument is that a certain communicative capacity must be seen as the general characteristic of this eighteenth century sensibility. It is a capacity that makes possible the communication between different parts of the individual, and between the individual and its physical and social environment. As such, it made the sensibility even more important to the definition of human nature than reason itself, in the Age of Reason

This article deals with violence exercised by girls (hereinafter referred to as "girl violence"). A combined perspective is how âageâ and âgenderâ as cultural constructions can throw light both on the media debate concerning girl violence and just what young girls themselves understand by violence.By focusing on newspaper coverage of the "Rognan Case", in which a gang of girls maltreated and then let their 15-year-old girlfriend be raped, it is primarily discussed how media discourse elucidates the violation of age and gender norms. An analysis of the media's coverage of girl violence shows that the media acts as a protector of boundaries, within which violence continues to be coupled with aspects of masculinity.Furthermore, the article includes examples from interviews with girls who have themselves participated in violence. How do they react to the notions concerning gender and age? It is argued that the young girls both interpret and justify their actions within a narrow framework of feminine forms of expression. Violence and crime remain associated both with age and gender. Adolescence is a category where deviation and overstepping boundaries is almost anticipated, but this applies when referring to boys. Girls have a smaller deviation repertoire. Consequently, young girls who participate in violence are an extremely marginal group in the debate on adolescence and adolescent violence. The text ends up, therefore, by reflecting on what will happen when our cultural ideas on what a young girl ought to be, mingles with the social representation of the young girls themselves

The main theme of this article is the controversial relation between phenomenology, agency and social constructivism (including some forms of poststructuralism) within the disciplines of cultural studies and cultural history. Whereas some researchers are of the opinion that phenomenology and constructivism are incompatible positions, the article puts forward the argument that these theoretical traditions do not necessarily exclude each other. It is also argues in favour of the thesis that Edmund Husserlâs phenomenology and Michel Foucaultâs theories of discourse and power/knowledge share a general theory of constitution. Since constitution is the central theme of phenomenology, Foucault can be said to be some kind of âphenomenologistâ.âââThe article also provides an analysis of why the principles of subjectivity and intentionality are of so paramount importance to social and cultural sciences. The actorâs understanding of the situation is the difference that really makes a difference compared to âexternalâ explanations. It is argued, though, that the methodological approaches of phenomenology â epoché and phenomenological reduction â are not very helpful for empirical research, even if the critical motive of epoché is highly relevant. The article is also highly critical of phenomenologyâs move towards essentialism. âââThe âlifeworldâ is obviously an important concept in recent ethnological research. But the Husserlian approach to the lifeworld was never meant to be empirical ethnology. It should rather uncover the essential structures of the lifeworld, and not its contingent and variable features. Even though the author is critical of certain arguments and claims in classical phenomenology, he still argues that certain phenomenological motives are of lasting value in cultural studies

    Lise Lachmann og kjærligheten

This article tells the tragic story of an upper-class woman who lived in Christiania between 1769-1823. The sources to Lise Lachmannâs life are few and fragmentary, they  only give a glimpse into what was a complex situation. Lise Lachmann married twice. The first marriage was arranged by her parents, while the second was a result of her own feelings. Lise Lachmann struggled throughout her life, and she emerges from the material as an individual in changing social positions  and roles. An important source for this story is the memoirs of Conradine Dunker who, in addition to a sharp memory, suffered a fate not too different from Lise Lachmannâs. Both women embraced the new ideas on love and tried to put them into life by marrying the one they loved and against the wish of their parents. In a culture there is room for a certain degree of individual freedom to strech the limits of the norms, but it is not permittable to trespass them. Lise Lachmann went beyond what could be accepted while Conradine Dunker did not. Both of them, however, payed a high price for their love
