Get PDFAlthough women have been climbing mountains in Norway for more than 150 years, their history is mostly silent. The ideal of femininity which held that a woman should be weak, delicate and submissive, was challenged by mountaineering women, which again were met with strong resistance and dismay. In my sources, the Norwegian Tourist Associationâs (DNT) yearbooks, female climbers are only acknowledged in condescending terms, and it was assumed that a man would always be in charge of the climbing parties. These patronizing attitudes are grounded in the male belief in female inferiority. Thus, there can be are no good women climbers, they either arenât good climbers or they arenât real women. This article explores the reasons for the strong resistance climbing females are met with, grounded in Bourdieusâ theories on the symbolic order in society. I argue that climbing, an activity created by and for men, is a focal point for discourses on masculinity, femininity and sex roles, and an area which facilitates an alternative sex-enactment for women, but at a cost

Get PDFIn his treatise on the origin of the people of the North (1769), the historian Gerhard Schøning asks whether a population of giants once lived in the region. With his investigation of the problem, Schøning situates himself within an erudite tradition going back to the 15th century, when the Tuscan Annius of Viterbo claimed that his ancestors, the Etruscans, descend directly from Noah and were of giant size. With his claim, Annius reinterpreted the biblical tradition of giants as an inherently wicked race, and laid the grounds for what has been called ”patriotic pseudo-history”. Remnants of giants bones and teeth were dug out of barrows and found their way to the museum collection of numerous European princes, with the German Arminius, or Hermann, as the most well-known example. Scholars competed to claim the giants as the ancestors of just their people. Schøning identifies them with the Joths, descendants of Japhet, and the original people of Scandinavia. Later, they were ousted by the Goths, but some of the giants survived in the mountainous areas of Norway
The Arrow of Time and the Historization of Nature
Get PDFThis paper discusses in a historical framework the conception of nature as subject to changes in time. The important reconceptualization of nature from a static to a dynamic dimension occurred in the late eighteenth century, but did not refer to the underlying causes, the laws of nature. A deeper understanding of the continual decay of nature over long spans of time was only obtained in the mid-nineteenth century, with the second law of thermodynamics. The concept of entropy offered a justification for the irreversible changes of nature, from more organized states to less organized, and for this reason it became controversial in some circles. One may imagine that nature is temporal on an even more fundamental level, namely in the sense that the laws of nature are themselves varying in time. Suggestions of this kind first appeared in the late nineteenth century, and more recently they have become quite popular in physics and cosmology. However, although nature is indeed changing in time, this does not mean that natural science has become truly historical

No full textThis is a study of how socialist monuments in Croatian Istria are ending up in cultural brackets. When the region today is constructing its cultural identity, these monuments belong to the parts of material culture that are inert, and averse. Delineating a territory that no longer exists, an ideology that is severely contested and a rump Yugoslavia that in the 90s was becoming a threat to the new nation - they are ending up in a cultural limbo. Other parts of the past â even the fictional like the one described in the novel Mathias Sandorf by Jules Verne â have proven to be more useful in creating a legacy for the present. The partisan monuments thus help to exclude the part of history, of which most adults have direct memories. It is argued that cultural identity is a future oriented process that is carefully selecting its memories

Get PDFUsing patriotic sentiments as a vantage point, the article discusses emotions as a core element of the subjectivation of the late 18th century. Love of the Fatherland became a concept of the time to denote the proper attitude among the citizens; an emotion that should be experienced as an inner quality and not as an obligation forced upon them. This analysis investigates patriotism and cult of emotions as principal elements of a specific understanding of subjectivity and in the transition leading to romanticism and the 19th century. The analysis of subjectivation processes is based upon theoretical and analytical concepts from Michel Foucault. The 18th century cult of sensibility is seen as a part of a discursive formation, in which emotions are being objectified and textualized, and the individual is construed as a subject of emotion, reason and morality. It is proposed that military education and patriotic ritual enhanced the development of new forms of self awareness, and that emotions came to be central in the development of new âtechnologies of the selfâ that became important for the governmentality of modern states. The article is also a contribution to the genealogical analysis of how Western culture came to see emotions as the inner locus of the self, and hence as expressions of a true core of the individual

Vedtaket var et sterkt signal om et oppbrudd fra kirkens sakramentsforvaltning. Artikkelen sikter mot å klargjøre hva som likevel holder bevegelsen tilbake i forhold til å etablere seg som et eget kirkesamfunn
