Get PDFBy the end of the 18th century the robinsonade became a genre primarily of juvenile fiction. This development was influenced by Jean-Jacques Rousseau who in Emile (1762) had claimed Daniel Defoeâs Robinson Crusoe (1719) to be the only book worth reading for his pupil. This paper presents and discusses the robinsonade as an exemplary pedagogical genre and its attraction, in spite of its basically male paradigm, to both female authors and the discussion of girlsâ education. It examines juvenile robinsonades with female castaways and reveals different gendered adaptations to the story of survival as well as to the discourse of education. As female protagonists do not fit seamlessly in to the generic model, the texts expose the ambivalences of the generic model as such, and of the conceptions of exemplarity based on Rousseau. The analysis of exemplarity concentrates on the enactment and framing of the castaway story, as well as on the presentation of the protagonist oscillating between representativeness and uniqueness

Get PDFStatistics show that more than 25% of the population in Finnmark, in the north of Norway, is born outside the county. Interestingly though, hegemonic discourses in research and politics have focused nearly exclusively on the high out-migration from Finnmark. The newcomers and their stories about living in the north have received very little attention. This paper is a part of my on-going PhD-project, where I focus on in-migrants in two places in Finnmark, Vadsø and Havøysund. In 2005 I did five months of fieldwork there, as well as interviews with 25 women and 25 men from 31 in-migrant households. Several recent studies focus on how rurality is constructed by women and men by examining their representations of how it is to live in a place defined as rural. A gap in Norwegian rurality studies, however, is that the coast-inland dimension, as well as the North-South dimension, are omitted. This paper attempts to fill this gap by analysing what we may call in-migrants’ representations of northern coastal ruralities. The paper hereby challenges established understandings of rurality in research in Norway, and suggests new metaphors to grasp in-migrants’ sense of place in the rural North, such as ”compact materiality”, ”short distances”, ”an easy, practical everyday life” with possibilities of ”flexible belonging.

Get PDFThe overall aim of this study is to describe the social structure within Nordanstigs spelmanslag and further how the manifest and latent ideologies connected to the Swedish fiddler movement affects the learning and musical processes in Nordanstigs spelmanslag. The theoretical basis for the study was Bourdieuâs field theory, Berger & Luckmanns theory of institutionalisation, Lave & Wengers theories about Communities of practice and Liedmanâs concept of Manifest and Latent ideologies. The method consisted of both semi-structured interviews of three members in the spelmanslag and also Participatory observation with an auto-ethnographical approach on four occasions. The analysis was done using transcriptions and a self-invented color coding process of categorization. In the results it appears that a significant part of the latent ideology from the Swedish fiddler movement is manifested in the activity of the spelmanslag. Other findings are that the spelmanslag as an institution maintains a strong doxa that derives from its foundation which seems to have a fairly strong influence on its members concerning views on authenticity, repertoire and interpretation. The doxa is mainly upheld and reproduced by individuals that inherits a strong symbolic capital

Get PDFThis article discusses the use of secular and Christian iconography found in the important Jónsbók manuscript AM 350 fol., known as Skarðsbók, from 1363. The case study concerns the text-image relations of its illuminations and their form in terms of an interpictuality, that is the changed patterns of iconography in the context of a new textual frame. The study focuses on the symbolic importance of the historical book painting and sets it into the ideological background found in the polyphonic structure of the text. The article aims to show that in AM 350 fol. we find not only a strong Christian, holistic ideology visible in the interplay of text and image, but also that previous ideas about its commisson and the claimed intention of its production needs to be questioned
Ondskapens «pedagogikk» i selvets spiritualitet: nyreligiøse perspektiver på ondskap og lidelse
Get PDFOndskap, lidelse og det «uønskede» kan i nyreligiøsiteten fortolkes på flere måter. Denne artikkelen beskriver to nivåer av ondskap og lidelse, et ytre og et indre nivå, hvor det ytre i hovedsak omhandler estetisering av ondskap og populærkulturell ondskapsfascinasjon, i relasjon til Christopher Partridges (2004 og 2005) occulture-begrep. Det indre nivået som behandles i artikkelens andre del handler ikke så mye om det onde som om det vonde â ofte i form av lidelse. Lidelsen kan overvinnes ved positiv tenkning, gjennom ritualer, meditasjoner, terapier og teknikker finner aktører i nyreligiøsiteten en fungerende måte å minimalisere meningsløs smerte. Artikkelen tar opp begreper som holisme, positiv tenkning, karma og pedagogikk, og påpeker at lidelsen kan gis mening nettopp ved å fortolkes som en karmatisk læringsprosess

Hákonar saga Ívarssonar Once Again
Get PDFSverre Bagge has recently restudied the relationships of the various versions of Hákonar saga Ívarssonar and arrived at strikingly new conclusions.1 He favors the view that the account in Morkinskinna is the earliest version and is drawn from oral tradition (2014: 13). The author of Heimskringla (most likely Snorri) subsequently reworked this account on the basis of a conjecture that Hákon Ívarsson belonged to the lineage of the jarls of Hlaðir. The revision also involved a reordering of the chronology (2014: 9–10). The somewhat differing version of the story in Hákonar saga Ívarssonar, represented by four fragments of the fifteenth-century manuscript AM 570a, 4to, and a Latin “Compendium” found among the papers of Anders Sørensen Vedel, had previously been regarded as an early version from the beginning of the thirteenth century and hence as a source for Heimskringla.2 But Bagge concludes that it is a late version based on Heimskringla (2014: 4–8). The present paper returns experimentally to the view that Hákonar saga Ívarssonar is the oldest version, probably in some relationship to *Hlaðajarla saga, that the version in Morkinskinna was recorded independently from oral tradition, and that the version in Heimskringla is based on Hákonar saga with possible additions from Morkinskinna. Before entering into the details of this discussion, I will try to facilitate the comparison of the texts with an overview in tabular form

Get PDFIn this article I discuss emotions that informants in the archive Norwegian Ethnological Research (Norsk Etnologisk Gransking) have communicated in their written answers to a questionnaire on child freedom or voluntary childlessness. I will make no effort to define or categorise emotions, or to discuss whether they are universally or culturally based. Emotions will be seen rather as something that colour our notions and actions, something that are understood as cultural practices more than psychological conditions, and focus is on the making of emotions in meetings with certain topics. In this context, emotions will be a tarting point to understanding what is culturally accepted to communicate on a topic like eg. child freedom. The article discusses how emotions are communicated in a written questionnaire, how such expressions can be interpreted, and the logics that authorize the communicated emotions
