Geraldine Barnes: Bookish riddarasögur. Writing Romance in Me-dieval Iceland. The Viking Collection 21.
Get PDFToday it is generally accepted by the scholarship that the Icelandic riddarasögur, a cor-pus of ca. 30 Icelandic derivatives of medieval romance, supposedly written in the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, are indebted to the translated riddarasögur in terms of their subject matter, style and ethos. However, apart from the motifs borrowed from the translated riddarasögur, such as feasts, tournaments, travels, bridal quests, fights, adventures in distant lands etc., several Icelandic riddarasögur derive a consid-erable portion of their narrative material from encyclopaedic and historiographical traditions, accessible to medieval Icelanders in various Old Norse translations and adaptations: encyclopaedias, the life of Alexander the Great, Sallust and Lucan’s his-tories of the Roman fights in North Africa, the history of Troy, the history of the Jews, the adaptation of Historia Regum Britanniae etc. It is the function of all this en-cyclopaedic, geographical and historiographical material in the Icelandic riddarasögur as well the sagas’ interaction with the world of books and learning which is the central topic in the monograph Bookish riddarasögur by Professor Emeritus Geraldine Barnes, who in her book focuses on ca. 15 Icelandic riddarasögur marked by a distinctive book-ish and learned background. Professor Emeritus Barnes is noted for an extensive bib-liography in the field of learned traditions in translated and Icelandic riddarasögur: Tristrams saga ok Ísöndar and Arthurian legend, medieval geography, giants, travels to exotic lands, a concept of monstrosity, the abuse of learning, Byzantium in rid-darasögur, the legend of Prester John, and now she presents her work in this still rather unexplored field in an expanded and systematic book form

Get PDFThe Norwegian meteorologist Vilhelm Bjerknes (1862–1951), described by historians as the father of scientific meteorology, was himself an active writer of historical texts. The story about the «Bergen school of meteorology» as told by him and his assistants in various commemorative publications, still dominates historical understanding of meteorology. A number of anecdotes remain iconic in this story, and this article is an investigation of two of them. Through analysis of different layers of meaning in the anecdotes, the argument is that they reflect both smaller events and larger narratives and conceptions about science and the Norwegian people and nation. While the examined anecdotes represent personal glimpses on the past, they also offer wider views on nation and society, and the role of science

Get PDFThe ritual «saying the same word at the same time» is known in large parts of the world. This article is focusing on how the ritual has been performed in Sweden, from the 1800s to the present. By following the ritual over time continuity, variation, change and not the least the interaction between them are discussed; how tenacious structures as well as rapid changes have contributed to the fact that the ritual not only has survived through two centuries, but also have spread over large geographical areas. In the article I examine whet-her, and if so how, the change of the ritual reflects changing norms and values over time

Get PDFThe article is based on a case study, where a recording from 1937 with the traditional performer Aslak Brekke from Vinje, Telemark (1901–1978), has been the subject of technical measurement and analysis. The study points out methodological problems by considering a melodic progression as a series of discrete categories that can be measured in order to confirm or establish theories about pitch and step relations. Instead, pitch as sung notes and intonations seems to be elements in motion, pitch is not something stable. The measurements, in addition to established theories from international literature on perception of sound, lead to the conclusion that the sound of old style singing, “old” tonality, may be something else or at least more than earlier described in the Norwegian debate. Motion and other genre-specific aspects of sound quality must also be taken into consideration

They are volumes 65 and 66 in the Sylloge of Coins of the British Isles (SCBI). Since the publication of volume 1 in 1958 (Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge) this series has under the auspices of the British Academy made thousands of coins kept in public or private collections easily available and thus largely stimulated research into British coins

Get PDFBirgit Hertzberg Kaare døde 21. februar etter en tids kreftsykdom. Hun ble 67 år gammel. Birgit var professor emeritus i medievitenskap. Hun var utdannet folklo-rist, og arbeidet flere år som førsteamanu-ensis og professor (fra 1995) ved Institutt for kulturstudier (IKS), senere Institutt for kulturhistorie og orientalske språk (IKOS). Her hadde hun blant mange oppgaver også ansvar for Norsk Folkeminnesamling. I 2005 flyttet hun til Institutt for medier og kommunikasjon. Hun jobbet ved IMK til hun gikk av med pensjon i 2013. Til sammen jobbet hun 35 år ved Universitetet i Oslo

Get PDFUtstillingen i 22. juli-senteret ligger tilbaketrukket til i ruinen av Høyblokkas kantineområde. Et nøytralt banner med svart skrift på hvit bakgrunn forteller hvor inngangen er når man krysser plassen mellom Høyesterettsbygningen og Y-blokka. Siden målet med terroren var at Høyblokka skulle rase, er det sterkt symbolsk at det er her utstillingen er. Selv om bygningen bærer preg av å være en ruin med flassende murpuss og synlig armeringsjern, fungerer lokalet godt. Utstillingen er enkel og har få gjenstander, men oppleves aldri som tom, fordi selve bygget har så mange spor av terrorhendelsen i seg. De rå flatene forteller om kraften i bomben, men også om styrken i bygget og i de menneskene som ble stående igjen. Utstillingen består av fem rom med forskjellig tema og utstillingsgrep. Etter å ha passert sikkerhetsslusene møtes besøkende av to ansatte som hilser velkommen, deretter starter utstillingen logisk til venstre og går i sirkel tilbake til utgangspunktet
Andelslandbruk – spydspiss for bærekraftig omstilling i matvaresystemet
Get PDFAndelslandbruket er en modell for direkte kommunikasjon og omsetning av landbruksprodukter mellom produsenter og forbrukere, hvor forbrukerne kjøper en andel av produksjonen som vanligvis er økologisk produsert. De siste årene har antallet andelsgårder økt kraftig i Norge. Gjennom studier av de første norske andelsgårdene finner vi at denne framveksten skyldes at produsenter og forbrukere søker alternativer til det industrielle landbruket og de globale matvaresystemene, som også omfatter økologisk landbruk, forbruk og markeder. Studien viser at produsenter og forbrukere som er involvert i andelslandbruk generelt har miljø, helse og etisk orienterte holdninger og ver-dier. Forbrukerne synes det er meningsfylt å være med å dyrke egen mat, og å lære mer om økologisk dyrking. Gjennom sitt partnerskap ønsker produsenter og forbrukere å frembringe lokal, økologisk og fersk mat i et rikt utvalg. For dem er andelsgården en arena for å konvertere egne verdier til praktisk handling, noe som kan sees på som en form for etisk forbruk, eco-habitus og en måte å re-allokere makt tilbake til produsent, forbruker og lo-kalsamfunnet
