Brit Mæhlum and Unn Røyneland: Det norske dialektlandskapet.
In setting about reviewing an undergraduate textbook on dialects in Norway, I am faced with some choices. I can evaluate its pedagogical value. Or else I can seize the opportunity to present the book for the benefit of a non-Norwegian reading audience, helping to make information about Norwegian dialects available to a wider readership. And finally, I can take the book as a piece of scholarly writing and evaluate it as such. Potential readers of this review will most likely want to know what the book tells us about language variation in what is often referred to as a ‘sociolinguistic paradise’ (Røyneland 2009) – and this is the principal approach I will take
New Focus on Retrospective Methods. Resuming Methodological Dis-cussions: Case Studies from Northern Europe. Edited by Eldar Heide & Karen Bek-Petersen.
The present anthology is rooted in collaboration that began at the 14th International Saga Conference in Uppsala in 2009, where Eldar Heide discussed the need for greater methodological awareness in studies dealing with the use of post-medieval material in the study of Old Norse religion and mythology, and also of Old Norse literature and history. This was then followed up by the founding of the Retrospective Methods Network, which started by promoting a conference the following year in cooperation with the Centre for Medieval Studies at the University of Bergen and has been active since. New Focus on Retrospective Methods is a collection of articles that were originally presented as papers at the conference
Negative V3-declaratives in Finland Swedish
This article is concerned with negative V3-declaratives in the Swedish dialects of Finland. We argue that this peculiar word order is a consequence of syntactic reanalysis: the negative marker has changed from syntactic phrase to syntactic head. Though the negative marker in the standard varieties of Swedish has all the characteristics of a syntactic phrase, the data strongly support a head analysis of the negative marker in some of the Finland Swedish dialects: negation is phonetically reduced, may cliticize to the finite verb, and can combine with other negative elements to yield negative concord. The proposed development of the negative element is in line with the general direction of Jespersen’s (1917) cycle, as proposed also by van Gelderen (2008). Furthermore, our data reveal that negative V3-declaratives are less syntactically restricted and have a wider geographical distribution than has hitherto been assumed in the literature
Samlingens poesi
Around the middle of the eighteenth century, natural history witnessed a burst of popularity in the conglomerate state of Denmark-Norway. Natural history was a composite and inclusive term, and was variously connected to or encompassed by terms like natural philosophy, natural knowledge, physical knowledge and not least economy. Natural history was also composite in terms of practices: Collecting, classifying, dissecting, drawing, writing of books and letters, socializing and travelling were different aspects of what was called natural history. Importantly collecting was entangled with the other practices to such a degree that collecting was a principal «way of knowing» in natural history in the eighteenth century. In this article I will investigate eighteenth century colleting practices through two lenses. First, I want to enquire how natural historical collecting and collections were used for bringing forth new knowledge in different ways. Secondly I am interested in how collecting can be seen as a way of knowing that straddled between the poetic and the rational. How is passion and rationality entangled in this initial period of scientific collecting? I follow how what can be termed Linnaean ways of knowing was practiced by some Danish-Norwegian natural historians, and how different ways of working with and in collections were developed. The query takes its offset from Bjarne Rogan’s work on nineteenth and twentieth century collectors to develop the notion of the «poetry of the collection
Innledning
Progovac, Liliana: Evolutionary syntax.
In this monograph, Liliana Progovac (LP) challenges this mainstream assumption in presenting her case for a gradualist, adaptationist approach to the evolution of syntax
Kotti & Co – Å ta protesten til gaten
AbstractThe potentials of urban public space are often seen as an arena for the representation and articulation of the needs of people with different social and ethnic background, as well as a space for encounter and communication between them. The aim of this paper is to suggest an answer to the question how these potentials are turned to account in the context of fighting for the right to stay. I will approach the question by exploring the activities in public space that were carried out by the initiative Kotti & Co in Berlin Kreuzberg. Being motivated by the need to fight against unaffordable housing and displacement in their neighbourhood, Kotti & Co started in May 2012. The locals managed to occupy part of a public square and to turn it into a permanent protest camp. From here, the activists actu-alize their protest, declare demands, and withstand political strategies that try to assimilate them or tire them out. I argue that the initiative has created an important meeting place for people with different social, political and ethnic backgrounds, as well as a forum for a new and solidary form of public togetherness. These activities have strengthened Kotti & Co’s protest against gentrification of this urban quarter
Danseformidling på museer i ny drakt
In my master thesis “A dance museum” (Erlien, 2014) from the Erasmus Mundus Master program “Choreomundus – International master in Dance Knowledge, Practice and Heritage” I research and discuss dance dissemination in 10 different museums in Europe. In this article I will focus on a common method for dance dissemination in the Nordic countries, presentation of traditional dance in open-air museums. Skansen and The Museum of Romsdal have dance groups that perform staged traditional dances for tourists during the summer season. The danced repertoire has been the same for many decades, which the museums argue for being transmission and dissemination of their own old tradition of having a dance group (Erlien, 2014). I will challenge this by introduce how new museology principles may enrich museums´ dissemination of dance traditions in line with the UNESCO convention of 2003 for transmission and safeguarding of intangible cultural heritage. I will illuminate this with an imagined interactive dissemination setting on a museum arena, based on transmission of the qualities and aesthetics of traditional dances in the Nordic countries
