Board games of the Vikings – From hnefatafl to chess
Get PDFThe relationship between the Viking game hnefatafl and the new board game of chess is an intricate one, made all the more so by the fact that both are described by the same term: tafl. In this paper, I focus both on the archaeological and the literary evidence for the two board games and the diagnostic features that set them apart. At the outset, the famous reference to tafl by Kali Kolsson, the future Earl Rǫgnvaldr of Orkney, is highlighted, and it is argued that Kali actually meant skáktafl, i.e. chess, when he used this term. The Ballinderry board from Ireland and the Ockelbo rune-stone from Sweden are subsequently presented as typical examples of the Viking game hnefatafl. Part of the discussion dwells on the eddic poem Vǫlospá and the symbolic value of the golden gaming pieces, which, I argue, reflect the Nordic memory culture of the Viking Age. In what follows, the most important evidence for chess in the North is addressed: the Lewis chessmen. A consideration of all these various forms of evidence leads to the conclusion that Vikings played a key role in the reception and reshaping of the game of chess in Scandinavia and beyond

Get PDFDenne boken baserer seg på et omfattende intervjumateriale. Sommeren 1995 ble 132 pensjonister i Visby, Gotland intervjuet og bedt om å fortelle om sitt eget liv. Ideen og initiativet til dette omfattende prosjektet kom fra Ulf Palmenfelt selv og Folklivsarkivet på Gotland, og det ble støttet økonomisk, materielt og med arbeidskraft av arbeidsformidlingen i Visby, Gotlands kommune, og Landsarkivet i Visby. De transkriberte intervjuene er det ene fundamentet som danner grunnlaget for presentasjonene i boka. Fra det store materialet er noen fortellinger valgt ut og disse får en nærmere gjennomgang og drøfting. De er gruppert under kapitler som tar opp hvordan pensjonistene bruker livshistoriene til å plassere seg selv og sine opplevelser i en narrativ sammenheng: for eksempel kapitlene «Positioneringar», «Emotioner», og «Allmänmänskliga erfarenheter», eller etter de kontekstene som erfaringene framkommer i: «Minnen», «Dialoger», eller «De minsta kollektiven». Som man vil forstå, er samlingen ikke ment å være en vanlig eller konvensjonell folkeminnebok, der minnene grupperes i tematiske kapittel, for så å gi en slags samlet oversikt over de kulturelle, sosiale og økonomiske forholdene i et spesielt landskap, under en spesifikk tidsperiode. I stedet blir det pensjonistene formidler fra sitt eget liv og fra sin egen oppvekst et utgangspunkt for å forstå hvordan minnene blir en individuell innfallsvinkel til fortolkninger av opplevelser som vel kan deles av mange i lokalsamfunnet, men som likevel er personlige byggesteiner i forståelsen av det egne livet. En del av bokens prosjekt er også å vise at forholdet mellom individuelle minner og generell historie ikke på noen måte er ukomplisert og enkelt. Men for å få tak i dette må livsfortellingene fortolkes som ytringer som framkommer i en spesiell kontekst og sammenheng, og ikke som et reservoar av opplysninger fra en tidsperiode som i sin tur kan settes sammen til en ny og syntetiserende fortelling om det som skjedde i en bestemt tidsepoke

Get PDFThe aim of the article is to set adaptation of replicated place names (loaned names in traditional terminology) in a larger perspective by exploring a number of ways of conceptualising and studying the phenomenon within contact onomastics and contact linguistics. Many of the inquiries into this topic are deeply-rooted in settlement history, but I would like to open up for an option of a primarily linguistic investigation of place name adaptation as a process that in many ways resembles that of so called toponymic analogy. I see place name replication and place name adaptation as two different although related processes, a theoretical stance explored and built on in my doctoral thesis (2016), which forms a frame work for the present study. According to my definition of place name adaptation the difference between .native. and replicated place names can be said to disappear once the replication process is completed, because all place names irrespective of their etymology follow the development of the target language. There is however always a possibility of semantically adapting replicated place names in the long run which comprises one of the factors working against complete equivalence of .native. and replicated names. In the article I present some research opportunities revealed once the difference between .native. and replicated place names no longer is the sole matter of investigation

Get PDFThe book under review is the twelfth and final volume of Norsk Ordbok, a dictionary of Norwegian dialectal speech and the written standard of Nynorsk. With this volume, a project spanning nearly a century comes to an end, involving several generations of dedicated and visionary researchers, having survived the troubles of seeking funding over so many years, and being both subject to and user of all the technological innovations introduced in this long time span. In this review, I will go beyond this specific final volume and take a more general perspective, including the complete work. In addition to the actual dictionary volumes, I will also consider the data resources that were developed as the empirical foundation of the dictionary and have been made publicly available
Langeleiken i Trøndelagsområdet
Get PDFIn 2011, Elisabeth Kværne and the author started a registration and research project on the history and development of the langeleik, the traditional Norwegian long-fretted board zither. In this article, I have looked into and examined the registered instruments from the Trøndelag area. This includes the two counties of Southern and Northern Trøndelag, as well as the Swedish border areas of Härjedalen, which was a part of Norway until 1645. The examined material consists of seven instruments from Trøndelag and two instruments from Härjedalen. Additionally, I have included the two neighbouring counties of Hedmark with five instruments and Nord-land with two instruments, as geographical reference areas. The intention of the article was to look into a range of aspects of the langeleik in order to document variation in the material and to investigate whether the langeleik examples from Trøndelag possess any features special for that region. Then I related this to the material from the two selected reference areas. The three main aspects I prioritised were dimension and shape, design, and decoration and surface treatment
