(Re)Writing Self-killing in the Old English Lives of Saint Margaret

    No full text
This poster compares five manuscripts – three written in Old English and two in Latin – in order to unravel nuanced perceptions of self-killing in Early Medieval England. All five texts generally follow the same story. When about to executed, Margaret’s executioner, Malchus, sees that she is holy and does not want to kill her. Margaret, set on martyrdom, orders Malchus to kill her. Trembling, Malchus cuts her head off with his sword. Afterward, each manuscript alters the text, which this poster analyses. Sometimes Malchus falls (to his death or ambiguously), sometimes he dies (explicitly or implicitly), and sometimes he kills himself. This poster highlights these readings and emphasizes the rhetorical purpose of each semantic and rhetorical choice. Malchus’ different deaths show us nuanced early medieval perceptions of self-killing - even within the same authorial setting: the church. Thus, this poster highlights the ability of scribes to input their opinions and perceptions of self-killing into early medieval saints' lives. Ultimately, comparing these emendations tells us that the early medieval church had no monolithic perception of self-killing

This dataset contains data associated with the author’s doctoral thesis, which is available at http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/6432/ Warren, Eleanor Margaret (2013) Community and identity in the shadow of York Minster: the medieval Chapel of St Mary and the Holy Angels. PhD thesis, University of Leeds. The Chapel of St Mary and the Holy Angels was founded next to York Minster in the late 1170s by Archbishop Roger of Pont L’Évêque, and was reformed in 1258 by Archbishop Sewal de Bovill. Copies of these two foundation charters survive in the fourteenth-century archiepiscopal registers of William Greenfield. Transcriptions and translations of these two charter copies. The charters list the chapel’s endowments as the following parish churches within the medieval Diocese of York: Otley, Bardsey, Everton, Hayton, Sutton with the chapel of Scroby, Calverley, Hooton Pagnell, Harewood, Thorp Arch, Retford, Clarborough with its chapels of Gringley, Welham and Bolham, and Collingham. Data relating to the prosopographical study of the chapel’s canons from c. 1380-1520, which is the focus of Chapter Four within the thesis. Transcriptions and translations of sections of the York Antiphonal (Arundel Castle Archives, MS s.n. ‘York Antiphonal’), covering the general rubrics, First Sunday of Advent up to Feria 2 (fols 3r-11r), and Maundy Thursday to Easter Sunday (fols 89v-101v). These partial transcriptions of the York Antiphonal are made available in this dataset with permission from the Duke of Norfolk’s Librarian. A full digitised copy of the York Antiphonal is available from The Digital Image Archive of Medieval Music (DIAMM) www.diamm.ac.uk. Photographs of York Minster taken by the author in November 2009 and February 2010, showing surviving architectural features of the Chapel of St Mary and the Holy Angels (internal and external door), window nXXVIII above the door showing Marian iconography, and Archbishop Melton’s west window of the nave

Have synergies between nitrogen deposition and atmospheric CO2 driven the recent enhancement of the terrestrial carbon sink? – dataset

    No full text
The terrestrial carbon sink has increased since the turn of this century at a time of increased fossil fuel burning, yet the mechanisms enhancing this sink are not fully understood. Here, we assess the hypothesis that regional increases in nitrogen deposition since the early 2000s has alleviated nitrogen limitation and worked in tandem with enhanced CO2 fertilization to increase ecosystem productivity and carbon sequestration providing a causal link between the parallel increases in emissions and the global land carbon sink. We use the Community Land Model (CLM4.5-BGC) to estimate the influence of changes in atmospheric CO2, nitrogen deposition, climate, and their interactions to changes in net primary production (NPP), and net biome production (NBP). This data is gridded monthly output files for all simulations performed (see Table 1 of manuscript)
