    Data associated with 'Are Man-Made Hives valid thermal surrogates for natural Honey Bee nests (Apis mellifera)'

    Honey bees evolved to occupy thick walled tall narrow tree cavities and attach their combs directly to nest wall leaving periodic comb gaps (peripheral galleries). However, academic research and beekeeping are conducted in squat man made hives, with a continuous gap (bee space) between the combs and the walls and roof. Utilising honey bee occupied synthetic tree nests, this research has determined the average size of tree peripheral galleries, then with computational fluid mechanics (CFD) models of conjugate heat transfer of complete nests of trees and thin walled man made hives, compared the thermal impacts of comb gaps and vertical movement of the thermoregulated brood area. This shows their heat transfer regimes are markedly different, including: bee space above combs increases heat loss by ~70%; hives when compared to tree nests, require at least 150% the density of honey bees to arrest convection across the brood area and the larger vertical freedom of tree cavities can not only increase thermal resistance, but can make clustering redundant. The magnitude and scope of these differences suggest that some hive based research is more anthropogenic than natural, and that some bee keeping practices are clearly sub-optima

    Surface acoustic waves (SAWs) have significant potential for the energy-efficient control of magnetic domain walls (DWs). This study investigates the influence of SAW frequency (50, 100, and 200 MHz) on DW dynamics in magnetic thin films. Micromagnetic simulations are performed to examine the effects of SAWs on DW velocity. The results demonstrate that SAWs enhance DW motion by promoting the depinning of DWs from pinning sites through SAW-induced spin rotation. This spin rotation exhibits the same frequency as the applied SAWs. The impact of SAW frequency varies depending on the level of anisotropy disorder in thin films. In films with 3% anisotropy disorder, the DW velocity increases with SAW frequency, highlighting the amplifying effect of spin rotation and enhanced DW depinning. Conversely, in thin films with 1% anisotropy disorder, the DW velocity decreases with SAW frequency owing to significant SAW-induced energy dissipation via spin rotation. These findings underscore the intricate interplay between SAWs, spin rotation, and DW dynamics, emphasizing the role of anisotropy disorder in governing the response of DWs to SAWs. The study contributes to the understanding of SAW-assisted DW motion and provides insights into the optimization of and energy-efficient control of DWs in spintronic applications using SAWs

    Digital database of nose models for nasal prosthesis design generated with 3D morphable face model approach

    Designing nasal prostheses can be challenging due to the unpaired nature of the facial feature which precludes the use of mirroring techniques. It can be particularly difficult to accurately replace the missing tissue when preoperative information about the previous anatomy is unavailable or inadequate. In such situations, a database of nose models could act as a helpful starting point for the computer-aided design of a nasal prosthesis. Various digital nose model libraries are described in the literature based upon the facial scans of volunteers or anatomic casts. However, these libraries do not appear to be readily accessible to researchers or clinicians. Therefore, an open-access digital database of nose models has been generated based upon a 3D Morphable Face Model approach. This database comprises a manageable number of 44 simple, well-behaved nose meshes with standardized alignment that are ideal for computer-aided design

    This work studies the CLN025 peptide in concentrated aqueous solution to understand its self assembly and hydration structure. Using SANS we are able to predict that hairpin monomers self assemble into stacks whose long axes are perpendicular to the plane of the hairpin, and that on average these stacks consist of ~7 peptides. Using this we constrain emperical potential structural refinement analysis of the WANS data to build an atomisically resolved hydration structure of the hairpin stacks
