    This dataset comprises ADCP and CTD data, and grab sample photographies and sedimentological analysis results. All data were collected in two oceanographic cruises on the shallow Black Sea shelf, to the North of the Strait of Bosphorus. During the first cruise on board the RV Koca Piri Reis in 2010, grab samples were recovered from the seafloor. During the second cruise on board the RV Pelagia and RV Bilim in 2013, bathymetry data, flow measurements (ADCP) and conductivity temperature depth (CTD) probes were collected

    The Sec-translocon is a highly conserved membrane complex for polypeptide transport across, or into, lipid bilayers. In bacteria, the core protein-channel complex SecYEG resides in the inner-membrane, through which secretion is powered by the cytosolic ATPase SecA. Here, we present a single-molecule FRET dataset which shows that the SecYEG-channel fluctuates between open and closed states much faster than ATP turnover, while the nucleotide status of SecA modulates the rates of opening and closure

    We report on significant enhancements to the integration of terahertz (THz) quantum cascade lasers (QCL) and THz detection with a two-dimensional electron (2DEG) within a dilution refrigerator obtained by the inclusion of a multi-mesh 6THz low-pass filter to block IR radiation, a Winston cone to focus light output, and gating the 2DEG for optimised sensitivity. We show that these improvements allow us to obtain a >2.5 times reduced sample electron temperature (160mK compared with 430 mK previously), during cyclotron resonance (CR) measurements of a 2DEG under QCL illumination. This opens up a route to performing sub-100mK experiments using excitation by THz QCLs

    Fibrous networks constructed from high aspect ratio protein building blocks are ubiquitous in nature. Despite this ubiquity the functional advantage of such building blocks over globular proteins is not understood. To answer this question, we produced hydrogel network building blocks with varying numbers of protein L domains to control the aspect ratio. Using, shear rheology and small angle neutron scattering to characterise the mechanical and structural properties of photochemically crosslinked protein L networks. Here, we show that aspect ratio is a crucial property that defines network architecture and mechanics, by shifting the formation from translationally diffusion dominated to rotationally diffusion dominated. The functional advantages of this are increased mechanical strength and the rapid assembly of homogenous networks above a critical protein concentration, crucial for in vivo biological processes such as blood clotting. In addition, manipulating aspect ratio also provides a parameter in the design of future bio-mimetic and bio-inspired materials
