Seismic study of shallow circular tunnel in Red River sand (Vietnam)

    Get PDF
Attention should be paid to tunnels' seismic behaviour since many of them have been damaged by earthquakes. The paper presented a seismic study of a shallow circular tunnel by physical modelling on shaking table test. A small scale tunnel model of the Hanoi pilot metro line's underground segment was placed in the middle of a rigid soil container and buried in Red River sand (Vietnam). The table was vibrated along the soil container's long wall, with a simulated seismic wave created from the 1788 Tolmezzo (Italia) accelerogram. Five testing campaigns were executed, and the model's acceleration data were studied. The uni-directional vibration created by the shaking table caused the three-directional vibration of the physical model. The Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) frequency spectrum analyses were performed. The vibration characteristics of the model (i.e., frequency graph's structure, maximal acceleration, dominant frequency, strong-motion duration) in three orthogonal directions under the artificial earthquake action were compared. The obtained results proved the complicated seismic impacts on a shallow tunnel

Structural Assessment of the Historical Yozgat Clock Tower

    Get PDF
Many methods and tools have been used to measure time throughout history. People started using mechanical watches instead of sundials and hourglasses because of technological advances. After that, they built clock towers, which have become a symbol of cities. Although clock towers were first constructed in Europe, they soon spread to the Ottoman Empire. Now these structures are considered an important component of a country’s cultural heritage, and therefore must be preserved for future generations. The clock tower in Yozgat, Turkey is one such structure. For this study, a three-dimensional model of the Yozgat clock tower was constructed in a digital environment and subjected to static and dynamic analyses. The static analyses demonstrated that the structure is safe in terms of stress and displacement. However, the dynamic analyses demonstrated that damage would be formed in the lower regions of the tower base and extend all the way to the balcony in the event of an earthquake. Both the linear and nonlinear analyses yielded similar results in terms of where the damage would occur. This study could be used as a guide for future restoration studies or endeavors

Effetti dei viaggi in Italia sulla vita di Leon Tolstoj (1828- 1910)

    Get PDF

Yasmina Khadra’s The Attack: A “Redemptive Narrative”

    Get PDF
This article studies how Yasmina Khadra’s The Attack brings innovative narrative twists to the terrorist novel genre to challenge contemporary, western-based approaches to the issue of fundamentalism. It claims that the narrative’s humanist stance is the result of his long repressed feelings when he served in the Algerian army, during the period of the interior war of the 1990s. Amidst the tormented environment of that decade, silence was imposed on Khadra’s literary and humanist expression. But when he quitted the army, his repressed experience with political violence and terror found an outlet in fiction in the form of a redemptive narrative, which demarcates from some conventions of the ‘terrorist novel’, and provides new perspectives on the complex issue of fundamentalism

    Sociocritique et quête de socialité

    Get PDF

The Sufi poet Omar Ibn Al-Farid is considered one of the poetic voices that created and flooded a soft poem that is preserved and celebrated by the Arab literary heritage, and Sufi in particular. As Ibn al-Farid led Sufi poetry to higher levels, and raised his level of language and content to an unprecedented rehab, his poetic experience yielded the finest of what was said about divine love. In his journey towards the Absolute, he found in poetry a means to achieve his desires. This experiment in meditation and isolation was the source of the overflow by reflecting on his poetry by expressing spiritual meanings that he had acquired from his journey towards the invisible world. His poems came in luscious language, language from another stage, which included complex meanings and connotations that were based on the symbol in all its forms and patterns

This essay examines how the voice of women is represented in the novel “Hizya” (2015) by the Algerian writer Maissa Bey. It studies the manifestations of its distribution and multiplicity in the expanse of discourse structure characterized by fragmentation simultaneous composition and synchronous movement between what comes out of the narrator and the main character (Heyziya/ Liza) and the moralizing pronoun and from the poet “Ben Guiton” in his original and inspiring poem for the writer.  The study avails the sound and its manifestation in the knowledge extent of Bey in her novel in the name of woman carrying her voice without argument or politicization
