Genealogy, Symbolic Capital, and Power Reproduction in the Bani Qomaruddin Pesantren Community

    No full text
Genealogical documentation has long been a central tradition in Javanese pesantren communities, serving not only to trace lineage but also to preserve spiritual authority and cultural continuity. In Bani Qomaruddin, genealogy plays a significant role in shaping social relations, moral legitimacy, and institutional leadership. This research aims to examine how genealogical practice is capitalized as symbolic capital in socio-religious, economic, and political domains. Using a qualitative case study approach, data were collected through in-depth interviews with key figures across sub-lineages, selected via purposive and snowball sampling. The data were analyzed using Miles, Huberman, and Saldaña’s interactive model, with Bourdieu’s theory of capital and field serving as the theoretical framework. Findings show that genealogy in Bani Qomaruddin operates as a dynamic field where various forms of capital—social, symbolic, economic, and political—are produced, converted, and contested. It also reveals that genealogical legitimacy functions as both a spiritual ethos and a mechanism for structuring authority and resource distribution. The implication of this study is that genealogical practice serves as a key instrument in the reproduction of power, solidarity, and identity within Indonesian Muslim society.

Social media has significantly transformed how religious institutions communicate their teachings and assert authority among their followers. This shift became especially visible during the COVID-19 pandemic, when Islamic organizations in Indonesia were required to issue clear guidance on how to carry out religious practices at home. This study examines how the two largest Islamic organizations in Indonesia, Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) and Muhammadiyah, employed public figures and authoritative religious references such as fatwas in their digital communication strategies related to home-based worship. Drawing on Postill and Pink’s netnographic method, the research focused on the official Instagram accounts of the two organizations (@nuonline_id and @lensamu) over a four-month period from March to June 2020. Data were gathered through the observation of both visual and textual content, including captions, posts, and audience responses. The findings indicate that NU relied on respected religious figures and inter-institutional coalitions to legitimize its messaging, while Muhammadiyah emphasized structured authority through formal, systematic, and rationally composed official statements. The implication of this research is the potential to encourage religious institutions to utilize social media as a strategic arena for asserting authority, shaping public perceptions, and adapting their institutional roles in response to the evolving dynamics of society in the digital era.

Suicide incidents among college students have been increasing in the last decade before the turn of millennium. Since the young people are active users of social media, this research aims to map the topics of the college students’ post to X (formerly Twitter) autobase account using content warnings (“TW”, “trigger warning” and “CW”, “Content Warning”) to study sensitive or disturbing contents that may triggers trauma. Many college students in Indonesia created campus-based autobase accounts as a platform for sharing information both academic and non-academic, expressing opinions and feelings, socializing, etc. Its anonymous feature plays as a safe space so the users can be themselves on this platform, including posting sensitive contents. This research looked at autobase X accounts of three campuses in Indonesia. They are Institut Teknologi Bandung, Universitas Diponegoro, Semarang, and Universitas Gadjah Mada, Yogyakarta. This research is a netnographic research by collecting tweets containing trigger warnings from the autobase accounts of the three campuses, then grouping the tweets into topics. Using literature review related to the concepts of anonymity and safe space, it is found that autobase accounts with their anonymous feature is a platform with potential to be a safe space for college students to seek help, including helps for suicidal thoughts, mental health and self harm, sexual harassment, and express things that are considered taboo, especially in Indonesian culture, such as LGBTQ+ issues. This is also an effort to acknowledge collective vulnerability among students that may need further intervention

Exploring Journalism Convergence: A Qualitative Study of Media Group Network and Mahaka Media

    No full text
The development and practice of journalism are mainly determined by the availability of information and communication technology. Internet-based technology has transformed all lines of journalism. Journalism convergence is not only a trend, but also a necessity in the contemporary media industry. There are three types of journalism convergence, namely newsroom, newsgathering, and content.  In newsroom convergence, journalists from different platforms work together in one news production room and carry out their tasks in accordance with their media. Newsgathering convergence requires journalists to multitask, while content convergence or news content means that news is displayed in the form of multimedia content that combines texts, images, audio and others. This study aims to describe and analyze the practice of journalism convergence in Media Group Network and Mahaka Media. Using a qualitative approach, the researchers conduct observation, interview, and literature review as data collection techniques. This study finds that Media Group Network and Mahaka Media have already applied these three journalism convergence models (newsroom, newsgathering, and content). Media Group Network and Mahaka Media have been continuously and consistently applying those three aspects of journalism convergence. However, there are some differences in the journalism convergence process in Media Group Network and Mahaka Media, namely the code of ethics and training for journalists. Another difference is that Mahaka Media provides print on demand for its readers, while Media Group Network has broad coverage on journalism convergence through free to air television, Metro TV

The Collaborative Model In Indonesia Digital Media Landscape: Study Of Institutional Innovation In \u27Close The Door’

    No full text
The digital environment provides opportunities for everyone and is anticipated to create more equitable sharing of power in society.  Unfortunately, with the growth of capital and monetization issues in the digital environment, control of the digital landscape by a number of parties is inevitable. This condition was identified in YouTube, one of the most influential digital platforms in Indonesia. Deddy Corbuzier is now known as the most popular YouTuber in Indonesia. Not only in terms of subscriber count and channel views, but also the composition of his institutional collaborator through Close The Door. A model that can be elaborated to describe how collaboration is created in the landscape of digital content producers in Indonesia. The institutional track record leveraging Deddy Corbuzier\u27s fame has impacted  the development of the digital content industry.  From a political economy of media perspective, this condition portrays the paradoxical condition of content creators in Indonesia. First, similar to what happened in the traditional media business, the institutional ruler was established in Indonesia\u27s digital landscape. Second, in the middle of uncertain conditions for content providers to survive, the institution creates a solution for digital media with a collaboration mechanism. This research was conducted through a desk study to examine how innovation was formed through collaboration among digital content creators. This study illustrates that while the digital media ecosystem helps content producers thrive initially, in the long run, it also promotes digital capitalization and the emergence of new rulers

From Pulpit to Platform: Algorithmic Mediation and the Transformation of Religious Authority on YouTube

    No full text
Social media algorithms have been widely argued to shape information exposure through personalization based on users’ interaction histories, with potential implications for filter-bubble and echo-chamber dynamics. This study examined how algorithmic variables affected the relevance of YouTube content recommendations and considered broader socio-religious implications of increasingly personalized visibility. A quantitative quasi-experimental Interrupted Time Series Design (ITSD) was implemented by creating 25 test accounts with diverse demographic profiles and interest themes (informed by APJII 2024). Each account followed the same procedure across five iterations: a keyword search was conducted, the top-10 recommended videos were recorded, and three recommendations were opened using a randomized selection rule, yielding 1,250 video observations. Data was collected via the YouTube API, manually coded for recommendation relevance, transformed into numeric variables, and cleaned using the Interquartile Range (IQR) method. A logistic regression model was estimated and validated using the Hosmer–Lemeshow test, logit-linearity checks, and Variance Inflation Factor (VIF) diagnostics. Simple Exponential Smoothing (SES) and Holt’s Linear Trend were applied to project recommendation patterns across iterations. Iteration emerged as the most influential predictor of recommendation relevance, whereas other variables showed small or non-significant effects. The model demonstrated acceptable fit and no problematic multicollinearity, and forecasting suggested increasing relevance across iterations. Overall, the results were consistent with the strengthening of viewing-history-based personalization, which may reduce informational diversity and may facilitate a shift of religious authority toward digital actors more adaptive to algorithmic visibilit
