Between Clicks and Convictions: Youth Political Participation on Facebook in Indonesia and Pakistan

    Get PDF
Social media has emerged as a pivotal arena for youth political participation, particularly within Muslim-majority societies where access to formal civic channels is often constrained. Despite growing interest in digital political engagement, comparative research remains limited in addressing how socio-cultural and political variables mediate online participation. This study investigates how Muslim youth in Indonesia and Pakistan utilize Facebook to articulate political ideologies, engage in civic discourse, and mobilize collective action. Employing a mixed-method approach, the study draws on both quantitative and qualitative data collected through an online survey administered to 30 purposively selected respondents (15 from each country), comprising Master\u27s and PhD students active in digital political discussions. The survey incorporated both closed-ended items and open-ended questions to capture measurable patterns and nuanced perspectives. The researchers applied thematic and descriptive analyses to interpret trends and narratives emerging from the data. The findings reveal contrasting modes of engagement: Indonesian youth predominantly exhibit issue-oriented, personalized political expression, while the Pakistani youth counterparts demonstrate more ideologically aligned, affectively polarized participation linked to partisan narratives. The implication of these findings is that both policy design and theoretical models of youth political participation must account for cultural and structural specificities, as context-sensitive approaches are essential for effectively understanding and fostering civic engagement in diverse Muslim-majority societies.

    No full text
This study discusses the communication and cultural adaptation of Indonesian diaspora students who are studying abroad. The background of this research is rooted in the need to understand how students adjust to their surrounding environment and how they experience cultural adaptation while pursuing education overseas, where the culture and language differ from those of their hometowns. It is undeniable that Indonesian students face various challenges when studying abroad, such as adapting to a new environment, unfamiliar habits, and different patterns of interaction with groups or individuals. These challenges are influenced by several factors, including time, climate, academic environment, food, ethics, language, location, and cultural values, all of which have distinct characteristics. Barriers to communication adaptation can be observed in the ongoing communication process. The influencing factors include the communicators’ linguistic ability, the clarity of messages, the communication media used, the characteristics of the communicants, and the level of reciprocity within the communication interaction. This study employs a qualitative descriptive method, with Indonesian doctoral diaspora students at McGill University, Canada, serving as the research subjects. The results show that respondents needed time to adjust to their environment before they were eventually able to adapt well. The study concludes that adaptation, particularly the ability to understand the local culture and language plays a crucial role in enabling students to adjust successfully

The knowledge of first-time voters is influenced by sociological and psychological factors, which are different from the previous generation. This study aims to know democracy literacy among first-time voters, particularly in using social media. Democratic literacy encourages citizens to speak up bravely and criticize the policy. This study uses qualitative research with the Focus Group Discussion method with eight participants. The participants of the FGD are first-time voters actively involved in the student press. The results show that first-time voters have a foundation of democratic literacy so that they are able to analyse the political issues on social media and the hoaxes around political issues. Social media becomes the primary medium for the participants to access political issues, ranging from Instagram, X, and TikTok. These first-time voters conduct only two activities when using social media, namely consuming and participating in political issues, such as giving likes on a post from politicians. However, they do not create political information on social media and choose private spaces to discuss political issues because they are aware of the risks and consequences in discussing politics in social media
