    Narratives, Symbols, and Rituals: Oral Tradition in Indigenous Resistance to Development Structuralism in West Papua, Indonesia

    Development projects that disregard Indigenous rights often provoke resistance, particularly in West Papua, Indonesia, where the Indigenous Kaimana people uniquely employ covert resistance through oral traditions to safeguard their rights. This study aims to understand how the Kaimana Indigenous community utilizes orality as a form of resistance against developmental structuralism. Employing a realist ethnographic method, this research directly observes the daily lives of the Indigenous community and documents forms of hidden resistance embedded in their oral traditions. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, focus group discussions (FGDs), observation, and documentary analysis of symbolic resistance activities. The findings reveal that Kaimana\u27s Indigenous resistance is conveyed through three principal elements: storytelling, symbolism, and ritual. First, storytelling serves as a medium of resistance by recounting their spiritual connection to nature as a way of upholding ancestral rights. Second, symbols such as bamboo and sago leaves are used in road blockades, representing life and resistance. Third, traditional rituals involving everyday symbols are believed to possess mystical power and are used to protect Indigenous lands. These three elements illustrate that while the Kaimana community does not wholly oppose development, they demand that their customary rights be respected throughout the process. Pembangunan yang mengabaikan hak-hak masyarakat adat sering kali memicu resistensi, terutama di wilayah Papua Barat, Indonesia, di mana masyarakat adat Kaimana memiliki cara unik dalam mempertahankan hak mereka melalui resistensi tertutup berbasis Oral Traditions. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk memahami bagaimana masyarakat adat Kaimana menggunakan kelisanan sebagai bentuk perlawanan terhadap strukturalisme pembangunan. Dengan menggunakan metode etnografi realis, penelitian ini mengamati langsung kehidupan sehari-hari masyarakat adat dan mendokumentasikan bentuk-bentuk perlawanan yang tersembunyi dalam tradisi lisan. Data dikumpulkan melalui wawancara mendalam, diskusi kelompok terfokus (FGD), observasi, dan studi dokumentasi terkait aksi perlawanan simbolis. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa resistensi masyarakat adat Kaimana dilakukan melalui tiga elemen utama: cerita, simbol, dan ritual. Pertama, cerita menjadi sarana perlawanan dengan mengisahkan hubungan spiritual mereka dengan alam sebagai cara mempertahankan hak leluhur. Kedua, simbol-simbol seperti bambu dan daun sagu digunakan dalam aksi pemalangan sebagai lambang kehidupan dan perlawanan. Ketiga, ritual adat yang melibatkan simbol-simbol sehari-hari dianggap memiliki kekuatan magis dan digunakan untuk melindungi wilayah adat. Ketiga elemen ini memperlihatkan bahwa masyarakat adat Kaimana tidak sepenuhnya menolak pembangunan, namun menuntut agar hak-hak adat mereka dihormati dalam proses tersebut

    Empowering Youth in Islamic Philanthropy: Addressing Challenges and Enhancing Sustainable Engagement

    Youth play a vital role in the sustainability of Islamic philanthropic organizations in Indonesia, serving as drivers, influencers, and beneficiaries. However, challenges such as career instability and limited understanding of Islamic philanthropy often hinder their long-term involvement in philanthropic activism. This study aims to analyze the strategic role of youth in Islamic philanthropic activism in Indonesia, identify the challenges they face, and explore solutions to enhance their sustainable engagement. The research employs a qualitative descriptive approach, examining three Islamic philanthropic organizations in Indonesia: Daarut Tauhiid (DT) Peduli, Dompet Dhuafa, and Rumah Amal Salman. Data were collected through observations and document analysis. The findings reveal that youth are significant in managing technology and social media-based philanthropic programs. They also act as influencers, encouraging other young people to participate in philanthropic activities. However, their status as volunteers, without stable career prospects, often results in temporary involvement. To promote more sustainable participation, institutional reforms are needed to provide professional development opportunities for youth in philanthropy. Kaum muda memiliki peran penting dalam keberlanjutan lembaga filantropi Islam di Indonesia, baik sebagai penggerak, influencer, maupun penerima manfaat. Namun, tantangan yang dihadapi kaum muda dalam aktivisme filantropi, seperti kurangnya stabilitas karier dan keterbatasan pemahaman tentang filantropi Islam, sering kali menghambat keterlibatan jangka panjang mereka. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis peran strategis kaum muda dalam aktivisme filantropi Islam di Indonesia dan mengidentifikasi tantangan yang dihadapi, serta solusi yang dapat diterapkan untuk meningkatkan keterlibatan mereka secara berkelanjutan. Metode penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan deskriptif kualitatif dengan mengkaji tiga lembaga filantropi Islam di Indonesia: Daarut Tauhiid (DT) Peduli, Dompet Dhuafa, dan Rumah Amal Salman. Data dikumpulkan melalui observasi dan studi dokumentasi. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa kaum muda memiliki peran signifikan dalam pengelolaan program filantropi berbasis teknologi dan media sosial. Mereka juga berfungsi sebagai influencer untuk menarik generasi muda lainnya agar berpartisipasi dalam kegiatan filantropi. Namun, status mereka sebagai volunteer tanpa jaminan karier yang stabil membuat keterlibatan mereka dalam lembaga filantropi sering bersifat sementara. Untuk meningkatkan partisipasi yang lebih berkelanjutan, diperlukan reformasi sistem kelembagaan yang memungkinkan kaum muda berkembang secara profesional di dalam dunia filantropi

    Transforming Heritage: Analyzing Cultural Capital and Value Shifts in Indonesia\u27s Ngunjung Buyut Tradition

    Social change and modernization have impacted various traditions in Indonesia, including Ngunjung Buyut, an ancestral homage tradition that holds significant meaning for the Indramayu community, West Java. In the context of changing times, this tradition has undergone a shift in values. This research employs a qualitative approach with a case study method conducted in Penganjang Village, Indramayu Regency. Data collection was carried out through in-depth interviews and participatory observation involving informants from both older and younger generations. Data analysis focuses on identifying forms of cultural capital that have emerged within the Ngunjung Buyut tradition in the contemporary era. Findings indicate that objectified cultural capital, such as ngarak processions and artistic performances, has become the primary attraction for younger participants, shifting the focus away from religious activities like communal prayer. While these supporting activities have successfully increased youth engagement, this shift poses a risk to the internalization of religious values. Additionally, this transformation has created a new dynamic in social solidarity, where recreational aspects now overshadow the tradition’s original spiritual significance. Perubahan sosial dan modernisasi telah memengaruhi berbagai tradisi di Indonesia, termasuk Ngunjung Buyut, tradisi penghormatan leluhur yang penting bagi masyarakat Indramayu, Jawa Barat. Dalam konteks perkembangan zaman, tradisi ini mengalami pergeseran nilai. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif dengan metode studi kasus di Desa Penganjang, Kabupaten Indramayu. Pengumpulan data dilakukan melalui wawancara mendalam dan observasi partisipatif yang melibatkan informan dari golongan tua dan muda. Analisis data berfokus pada identifikasi bentuk modal budaya yang terbentuk dalam tradisi Ngunjung Buyut di era sekarang. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa objectified cultural capital, seperti kegiatan ngarak dan pertunjukan seni, kini menjadi daya tarik utama bagi generasi muda, menggeser fokus dari kegiatan religius seperti doa bersama. Meskipun kegiatan pendukung berhasil meningkatkan partisipasi generasi muda, pergeseran ini menimbulkan risiko berkurangnya internalisasi nilai keagamaan. Selain itu, perubahan ini juga menciptakan dinamika baru dalam solidaritas sosial, di mana aspek rekreatif lebih menonjol dibandingkan dengan makna spiritual awal tradisi

    Multicultural Education in Preventing Radicalism: Insights from Pesantren Tremas, Indonesia

    Religious radicalism remains a significant challenge in Indonesia, where extremism is rooted in a profound misunderstanding of diversity. Pesantren Tremas employs multicultural education to combat radicalism by integrating inclusive Islamic values into its curriculum. This study analyzes how Pesantren Tremas integrates Islamic education with multicultural values to promote tolerance and inclusivity. This research employs a qualitative case study method at Pesantren Tremas, gathering data through interviews, observations, and document analysis. The findings indicate that the multicultural education strategies at Pesantren Tremas, which include teaching ta’aruf, tasamuh, and the values of ta’awun, are effective efforts to counter radicalism by fostering tolerance and cooperation among students from diverse backgrounds. These strategies involve collaborative projects and group discussions integrating Islamic teachings into social activities, preparing students to manage cultural and religious conflicts and contribute constructively to an inclusive society. Radikalisme agama tetap menjadi tantangan utama di Indonesia, dimana ekstremisme berakar dalam ketidakpahaman mendalam tentang keberagaman. Pondok Pesantren Tremas menggunakan pendidikan multikultural sebagai alat untuk melawan radikalisme dengan mengintegrasikan nilai-nilai Islam yang inklusif dalam kurikulumnya. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk menganalisis bagaimana Pondok Pesantren Tremas mengintegrasikan pendidikan Islam dengan nilai-nilai multikultural untuk mempromosikan toleransi dan inklusivitas. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif dengan studi kasus di Pondok Pesantren Tremas, mengumpulkan data melalui wawancara, observasi, dan analisis dokumen. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa strategi pendidikan multikultural di Pondok Pesantren Tremas, yang mencakup pengajaran ta’aruf, tasamuh, dan nilai ta’awun, menjadi salah satu upaya efektif untuk mengcounter radikalisme dengan menanamkan toleransi dan kerjasama di antara santri dari berbagai latar belakang.     FROM ANTI-ESTABLISHMENT POPULISM MOVEMENT TO POLITICAL PARTY: REVISITING UMMAT PARTY IN INDONESIA

    The rise of populist movements in Indonesia\u27s political culture and democracy is influenced by the pragmatic ideologies of Muslim figures and perspectives that represent the majority group in the country. The formation of the Ummat Party represents one of the manifestations of the populist movement. The objective of this research is to elucidate the evolution of anti-establishment populist movements that have manifested as the Ummat Party, which has been initiated by Islamic populist figures in Indonesia, specifically Amien Rais. This study was conducted using a qualitative research method. Data collection techniques were carried out through observation and literature review. The findings revealed that Amien Rais employed anti-establishment populist narratives to create a movement of resistance, resulting in the establishment of the Ummat Party in Indonesia. By utilizing this narrative, the Ummat Party aims to challenge the socio-political status quo within Indonesia\u27s democratic culture, advocating for change. Moreover, the Ummat Party exhibits a political agenda in utilizing the anti-establishment movement as a strategy to attain power and as a form of opposition against the current government in Indonesia.Gerakan populisme dalam budaya politik dan demokrasi di Indonesia banyak dipengaruhi oleh pemikiran praktis tokoh dan pandangan Muslim yang menjadi kelompok mayoritas di Indonesia. Munculnya Partai Ummat adalah salah satu dari bentuk gerakan populisme tersebut. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menjelaskan proses munculnya gerakan populisme anti-kemapanan yang bertransformasi menjadi Partai Ummat yang digagas oleh tokoh populis Islam di Indonesia, yakni Amien Rais. Penelitian ini dilakukan dengan menggunakan metode kualitatif. Teknik pengumpulan data dilakukan melalui observasi dan telaah pustaka. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa Amien Rais menggunakan narasi populis anti kemapanan guna membentuk gerakan perlawanan dengan mendirikan Partai Ummat di Indonesia. Melalui narasi ini pula, Partai Ummat berupaya untuk mengubah struktur sosial politik dalam budaya demokrasi di Indonesia. Lebih lanjut, terdapat kepentingan politik Partai Ummat untuk mengambil isu gerakan anti kemapanan ini sebagai sarana mencapai kekuasaan dan sebagai bentuk resistensi terhadap pemerintah Indonesia saat ini

    COMMUNICATION BARRIER TOWARDS ORPHANAGE STUDENT LEARNING PROCESS DURING COVID-19 PANDEMIC

    Validity and reliability are the most important aspects to determine the quality of research conducted by researchers. This study aims to measure the validity and reliability of the communication barrier instrument in the learning process of orphanages during the pandemic. The instruments used in this study were 20 items. This research design applies a quantitative paradigm. The validity and reliability of the communication barrier instrument were measured by Rasch Model Analysis (RMA) using Winsteps version 3.71.0.1 software. The students involved in this study consisted of 380 students from orphanages in the city and district of Bogor. RMA analyzed six aspects in determining the instrument\u27s stability: person and item reliability, item difficulty level, item polarity, misfit item, unidimensional, and person map item. Based on these seven aspects, the instrument used in this study was valid and reliable to measure students\u27 communication barriers during the pandemic. The importance of valid and reliable instruments can be helpful to determine the condition of students during the learning process during the pandemic. The instruments are essential for parents and teachers to deal with student changes during the learning process. Public educators can use the implications of this research and interested people to measure the communication barrier condition of students of the process during the pandemic. Future studies are needed to conduct testing for all students, from elementary to higher education institutions with more comprehensive research sites

    Peran Mediasi Network Heterogeneity pada Hubungan Online Subjective Well-Being dan Social Media Fatigue pada Pengguna Media Sosial

    The use of social media has many implications for individuals. One of the impacts that arises is users’ Online Subjective Well-Being (OSWB). This study aims to explore the relationship between OSWB and Social Media Fatigue (SMF) mediated by network heterogeneity; privacy concern, social comparison and selfdisclosure. This correlational research design used early adult respondents of a range of ages 20 - 30 years (N = 337) which was taken using non-probability quota sampling. Data was analyzed using SPSS Process (Model 4) by Hayes. The results showed that OSWB was able to predict SMF directly. The factors which succeed in mediating OSWB and SMF were self-disclosure, while privacy concerns and social comparison were unable to act as mediator. However, all three mediating variables have a positive correlation with SMF. Individuals with high OSWB are predicted to have lower SMF. In addition, the role of self-disclosure greatly determines the occurrence of SMF. Penggunaan media sosial membawa banyak implikasi bagi individu. Salah satu dampak yang muncul adalah Online Subjective Well-Being (OSWB) pengguna. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengeksplorasi hubungan antara OSWB dan Social Media Fatigue (SMF) yang dimediasi oleh network heterogeneity; privacy concren, social comparison dan self-disclosure. Penelitian koreasional ini melibatkan responden dewasa awal dengan rentang usia 20 - 30 tahun (N = 337) dengan pengambilan sampling menggunakan non probability quota sampling. Analisis data melalui SPSS Process (Model 4) oleh Hayes. Hasil penelitian menujukkan OSWB mampu memprediksi SMF secara langsung. Adapun faktor yang berhasil menjadi mediasi adalah self-disclosure sedangkan privacy concerns dan social comparison tidak mampu menjadi mediator. Namun demikian, ketiga variabel mediasi berkorelasi positif dengan SMF. Individu dengan OSWB yang tinggi diprediksi memiliki SMF yang lebih rendah. Selain itu, peran self-disclosure dalam diri sangat menentukan proses terjadinya SMF

    IMPLEMENTATION OF KUNTOWIJOYO\u27S PROPHETIC SOCIAL SCIENCES AS AN APPROACH TO RECONSTRUCT THE INTERPRETATION OF THE QUR’ANIC VERSES OF THE STORY OF IBRAHIM

    This study explores the utilization of Kuntowijoyo\u27s concept of Prophetic Social Science as a method for comprehending the verses of the Qur\u27an. The passages in question pertain to the narrative of Abraham engaging in dialogue with different interlocutors. This study addresses three key inquiries: 1) The definition of ISP and Kuntowijoyo\u27s perspective on it. 2). Which passages pertain to the narrative of Ibrahim AS? 3). What is the process of constructing verse interpretation through ISP and how do the implications and implementations of interpretation products affect social life in Indonesia. The research methodology employed is descriptive analysis, specifically utilizing a literature review technique encompassing primary materials authored by Kuntowijoyo and secondary sources published by other scholars who have explored Kuntowijoyo\u27s concepts. The findings of this study indicate that ISP, which stands for Islamic Science Prophetic, is a scientific output derived from prophetic material that encompasses more than only the teachings of Prophet Muhammad. 2). Ibrahim serves as an exemplary character that may be emulated as a role model in ISP. This is derived from the manner in which Ibrahim engaged in discussion with his interlocutors. 3). Ibrahim\u27s dialogue approach serves as an exemplary model for fostering peace in social life, particularly among religious individuals in Indonesia.Tulisan ini membahas tentang bagaimana konsep Ilmu Sosial Profetik Kuntowijoyo dijadikan sebagai sebuah pendekatan dalam memahami ayat-ayat al-Qur’an. Adapun ayat-ayat yang dimaksud adalah ayat yang berkaitan dengan kisah dialog Ibrahim dengan berbagai lawan bicara. Kajian ini berangkat dari tiga pertanyaan mendasar, 1). Apa yang dimaksud dengan ISP dan bagaimana pemikiran Kuntowijoyo. 2). Apa saja ayat-ayat yang berkaitan dengan kisah Ibrahim AS. 3). Bagaimana kontruksi interpretasi ayat melalui ISP dan bagaimana pula implikasi serta implementasi produk interpretasi dalam kehidupan bermasyarakat di Indonesia. Metode penelitian yang digunakan adalah deskriptif analitik, khususnya dengan menggunakan pendekatan kajian kepustakaan melalui sumber-sumber primer karya Kuntowijoyo maupun sumber-sumber sekunder yang dituliskan orang lain terkait ide-ide Kuntowijoyo. Hasil penelitian ini adalah 1). ISP adalah produk ilmu yang diambil dari data profetik kenabian yang tidak hanya terpaku kepada nabi Muhammad. 2). Ibrahim merupakan figur yang dapat dijadikan role model dalam ISP. Hal ini didasari dari bagaimana Ibrahim berdialog dengan lawan bicaranya. 3). Konsep dialog Ibrahim adalah contoh yang ideal bagi umat manusia, khususnya umat beragama di Indonesia dalam menciptakan kedamaian dalam kehidupan sosial

    THE TRANSFORMATION OF RELIGIOUS AUTHORITY IN THE ERA OF NEW MEDIA: ANALYZING DISPARITIES IN OPPORTUNITIES BETWEEN FEMALE AND MALE ULAMA IN THE NAHDLATUL ULAMA ONLINE MEDIA

    The advent of new media has altered the conventional religious authority. Nahdlatul Ulama, one of Indonesia\u27s established religious groups, has been somewhat delayed in harnessing new media platforms, such as its YouTube channel and NU Online website, to disseminate Islamic ideals. Regrettably, NU Online only offers platforms dedicated to the exploration of women\u27s concerns, with female researchers serving as the primary sources of knowledge. This study aims to elucidate the reasons behind the disparity in opportunities between female professors and their male counterparts in the NU media sphere. The study employed a qualitative netnography methodology and examined the data through the lens of Peter L. Berger\u27s Social Construction theory. The findings indicate that the prevailing stereotype of women, namely the perception that women are only supplementary to males, leads to a disparity in the allocation of resources between female and male priests at NU. Female priests, with diverse knowledge and educational capital, should rightfully be recognized as authoritative figures in the realm of religion.Munculnya new media membuat otoritas keagamaan tradisional mengalami pergeseran. Nahdlatul Ulama sebagai salah satu organisasi keagamaan tradisional di Indonesia sedikit terlambat memanfaatkan new media untuk menyebarkan nilai-nilai Islam melalui kanal youtube dan website NU Online. Sayangnya, website NU Online hanya memberi ruang-ruang yang membahas persoalan perempuan saja yang diisi oleh ulama perempuan sebagai narasumber. Penelitian ini mencoba mengungkap kenapa ulama-ulama perempuan ini tidak mendapat kesempatan seluas ulama laki-laki di ruang media NU. Penelitian ini dilakukan dengan menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif netnografi dan dianalisis dengan teori Konstruksi Sosial Peter L. Berger. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa stereotype terhadap perempuan, yakni bahwa perempuan hanya dipandang sebagai pelengkap laki-laki, menyebabkan positioning ulama perempuan NU belum mendapat porsi yang seimbang dengan ulama laki-laki. Ulama perempuan dengan berbagai modal pengetahuan dan pendidikan sebetulnya layak diposisikan sebagai pihak yang otoritatif dalam keagamaan

    This research delves into the prospects and obstacles associated with utilizing large-scale data in developing public policies within the Indonesian context. Integrating big data technology holds promise as a tool for government agencies aiming to refine the public policy formulation process, ultimately providing enhanced services to the populace. Despite its inherent complexity and costliness, incorporating big data offers the government a means to furnish the most up-to-date, precise, and granular information pertinent to developmental issues. For instance, in the agricultural sector, big data can offer an intricate understanding of the diverse requirements of farmers in distinct regions, such as the differentiation between rice varieties sought by farmers in Kalimantan compared to those in Java. Furthermore, the expansive reservoirs of geophysical and meteorological big data hold the capacity to significantly bolster the government\u27s initiatives concerning natural disaster mitigation policies. Nonetheless, the practical integration of big data still needs to be improved by a dearth of comprehensive regulations governing its application. Additionally, the perils of recurrent data breaches in the Indonesian context pose a formidable challenge. This comprehensive analysis concludes that using big data in policy formulation within Indonesia encounters substantial hurdles that threaten to overshadow the potential advantages this technology could offer in enhancing public policy crafting
