Active attention, retail investor base, and stock returns
No full textThe vast investor attention literature assumes that active retail investor attention drives retail investor base and therefore, stock demand and stock returns. We aim to provide empirical support for these critical assumptions that are heavily relied upon in the literature. Utilizing Robinhood investor data to measure retail investor base and the Google Search Volume Index for stock tickers to measure active retail investor attention, we find that active retail investor attention and increases in active retail investor attention are associated with a larger retail investor base, which is positively related to demand for stocks and stock returns in the subsequent four weeks. We find these effects are impacted by recent stock returns and are economically more significant for larger stocks
Saudis’ attitude toward principles of modernity: Social progress, individualism, and democracy
Get PDFThis study investigated attitudes of Saudi youth towards modernity and its principles, which are social progress, individualism, and democracy. Methodologically, the study used mixed methods by applying two scientific tools: semi-structured interviews and a survey. Study questions, both close-ended and open-ended, are programmed using REDCap. Data was gathered virtually via Zoom meetings. Twenty-one Saudi youth (10 males and 11 females) aged between 18 and 30 years old participated. They were recruited via social media platforms. Descriptive statistics were conducted to analyze survey data, and an inductive approach was used to analyze the semistructures interviews. The results show that the Saudi youth have an acute awareness and cautious attitudes regarding their own social, cultural, and political circumstances in dealing with modernity and its fundamental principles. However, distrust emerged as an issue in the story of Saudi modernity due to the perception that it is a government-led project and not an internal, dynamic process
Descartes meets Samkhya
Get PDFOne of the great shortcomings of Cartesian mind-body dualism has been what is known as the Mind-Body Problem. Specifically, how does the mind (an immaterial substance) affect the body (a material substance) and vice versa. One of the first Indian philosophical traditions, Samkhya, provides a strict dualism as Descartes does, but does not encounter the mind-body Problem. Samkhya avoids the problem of mind-body interaction by drawing the dividing line differently than Descartes does. Instead of dividing the world into mental and physical, Samkhya divides the world into pure awareness (purusha) and everything else (prakriti). Which of course includes the mind and will. This paper argues that the avoidance of the mind-body problem makes Samkhya a less problematic dualist structure. The Samkhya school’s conception of purusha as pure awareness also fits into contemporary discussions on consciousness in an interesting way. Principally, an obsession with phenomenal consciousness or qualia, misses what is at the rock bottom of mental life: Awareness itself, a feature that Samkhya highlights as distinct, while other philosophers conflate it with experience. Realizing the existence of purusha can be quite difficult and is recognized as such by the Samkhya school itself. Luckily, it can be glimpsed through a moderate amount of meditative training. Since seeing purusha is a matter of purely subjective experience, it may be hard to grant the idea any merit. A virtue of this concept and of meditation itself, is that it is objective in a particular sense laid out by Max Velmans, who reduces the empirical method to: If an observer performs procedure P, under the conditions O, they should observe or experience result R (181).
