    Ixil is the first language for over 100,000 people who live in Guatemala and now in the United States as well. It is one of 30 Mayan languages that are natively spoken in Mexico, Guatemala, Belize, and Honduras by over 7 million people. In the Ixil municipalities of Nebaj, Chajul, and Cotzal, Ixil is learned in homes and spoken in businesses, government institutions, and schools. It has a rich tradition of verbal artistry and a well-established system of writing that is taught in most schools in the Ixil area today. The way that Ixil is spoken is somewhat different in each of the three Ixil municipalities.     Tagging ATG5 with an epitope tag to measure the amount of ATG12-5 conjugation in atg10 mutants

    Autophagy is a necessary recycling process that occurs in cells, but the functions of the proteins that carry this out are not completely understood. The protein ATG10 has a distinct role in forming autophagosomes, large double membrane vesicles necessary for this process. ATG10 forms a covalent bond between the proteins ATG12 and ATG5 but its final effect on autophagosome formation is still unclear. We are using DNA manipulation techniques to add a myc epitope tag to yeast ATG5 which will allow us to measure the effect of atg10 mutants on ATG12-5 conjugation via Western Blot. These results will help us correlate ATG10 activity to autophagosome size and number

    Endless waves: Japanese creative writing project

    The goal of this project was to create a short story in Japanese for the purpose of improving my Japanese writing abilities, especially in areas such as natural character dialog, setting descriptions, pacing and other aspects of creative writing that are usually not covered in language classes. I outlined and drafted the short story first in English to establish a rough framework, then rewrote the story in Japanese with slight variations. I edited the text twice myself and subsequently edited it with a native speaker to ensure a natural tone. Throughout the final editing process, the initial goal of editing all five chapters of the Japanese version proved to be too large a scope for this project, and the goal was scaled back to an edited version of the first two chapters. Though the editing and revision process took longer than I originally anticipated, I was able to gain a far better understanding of prose writing in Japanese and the various ways it differs from English prose. In addition, my vocabulary and grasp of Japanese grammar was greatly expanded through working on this project

    Recirculation of plasmasphere material during idealized magnetic storms

    The fate of flux tube material once it is eroded from of the plasmasphere through a dayside plume remains unknown. The eroded plasmasphere material can be either swept away by the solar wind and lost from Earth’s system, or recirculated into the inner magnetosphere. Recirculating plasmasphere material could plausibly enter the central plasma sheet and contribute to the ring current. This work uses numerical models to explore this possibility. Historically this has been a difficult question to answer due to the fact that solar wind, ionosphere, and plasmaspheric plasmas are all dominated by hydrogen making it difficult to distinguish the source of plasma from observation alone. Recent advances in computing have enabled us to answer this question. Using the Space Weather Modeling Framework (SWMF) to couple the Block-Adaptive-Tree-Solar-Roe-Up-Wind-Scheme (BATS-R-US), Dynamic Global Core Plasma Model (DGCPM), and the Ridley Ionosphere Model (RIM), we can track the motion of the plasmaspheric material once it leaves the plasmasphere in a self-consistent manner
