Leaflet-heterostructures by MWCNT self-assembly following electrospinning
Electrospinning of nanocarbons such as graphene and carbon nanotubes typically produces mats composed of one-dimensional fibers where the carrier polymer encapsulates the nanocarbons. Recently it was found that decreasing the amount of carrier polymer in approaching the electrospinning-electrospray boundary for graphene suspensions resulted in retention of the graphene two-dimensional anisotropy with one-dimensional carrier polymer fibers connecting flakes. We explored a similar decrease in carrier polymer in MWCNT suspensions to investigate the network topology that might ensue. Unexpectedly, two-dimensional leaflet meso-networks were obtained wherein the leaflets comprise laterally aligned MWCNTs one to several nanotubes thick. A mechanism based on capillary force -driven MWCNT self -assembly activated by menisci formed during drying of electrospun fibers is presented. Such materials offer new approaches to producing high surface -area coatings for catalytic and energy applications and suggest ways of formulating two-dimensional MWCNT assemblies in metal foams and other open -cell porous materials
Female and feminine-presenting band directors\u27 experiences with gender microaggressions in the United States
The purpose of this study was to explore female and feminine-presenting band directors’ experiences with gender microaggressions in their work. Data consisted of survey responses (N = 974) from current, former, and aspiring band directors living and/or teaching in the United States. The most frequently experienced types of gender microaggressions were second-class citizenship, restrictive gender roles, and environmental microaggressions. Younger individuals, college instructors, and those in the South tended to experience certain microaggression types more frequently than did other directors. Open-ended descriptions indicated a variety of common experiences within each of the nine types of gender microaggression, the most frequent of which was being called a demeaning name (e.g., sweetie, honey, and young lady). The most stressful/bothersome types were second-class citizenship, assumptions of inferiority, and restrictive gender roles, and correlations between frequency and stressfulness were strongest for leaving gender at the door, denial of individual sexism, and denial of the reality of sexism. Implications include the need to develop awareness of, combat, and prevent gender microaggressions in the secondary band profession and to provide opportunities for teachers of all genders to be recognized and valued for their work
The masters athlete and use of antihypertensive medications
Hypertension is the most common cardiovascular condition in recreational athletes, especially older (masters) athletes. The interacting effects of hypertension, cardiac adaptation to endurance training, and antihypertensive medications on exercise performance are complex and of relevance to athletes, trainers, and health care providers. Cardiac adaptations occur in response to aging and endurance training, and findings may overlap with pathologic cardiac remodeling. This review summarizes the influence of antihypertensive medications on exercise performance, which can include both hemodynamic and metabolic effects, and includes practical considerations in choice of antihypertensive agent for the masters endurance athlete. Whereas the overriding priority for choice of antihypertensive is control of hypertension and improving clinical outcomes, other considerations regarding effects on exercise performance may also influence the choice of agent
Developing a Biodiversity Management Plan for the EMU Fish Lake Environmentla Education Center
The EMU Sustainability Commission uses the Sustainability Tracking, Assessment, and Rating System (STARS) to document sustainability practices and find areas of improvement. This study will present a biodiversity management plan designed to identify vulnerable ecosystems and species at EMU’s Fish Lake Environmental Education Center (FLEEC). This plan will improve EMU’s STARS rating and help prevent, manage, and/or remediate damage to natural habitats and sensitive areas. So far, it has been found that most organisms within the defined research area hold the IUCN Red List conservation status of “least concern”; however, the site includes nine vascular plant species with a Coefficient of Conservatism (C-value) of 10, which indicates a lower tolerance to environmental degradation. These species are the focus of this plan due to their sensitivity and their association with wetlands. Based on previous work at the site (Rice, 2024), most species with a C-value of 10 reside in the bog wetland at FLEEC. Using this information, broad management actions for that specific habitat are constructed, including controlled flooding and habitat rehabilitation. This plan concludes that current minimal recovery actions would be most effective to conserve rare and at-risk species

This project analyzes how this commercial building has adapted to meet the needs of a small town in Tecumseh, Michigan, in southeast lower Michigan
Atg11 and Atg9 interaction in selective autophagy
Selective autophagy, induced by cellular stresses, degrades/recycles a specific cargo. Ithelps prevent diseases like Parkinson’s, Huntington\u27s, cancer, and bacterial infections. It involves the formation of an autophagosome, a double-membrane vesicle that takes the cargo to the vacuole/lysosome for degradation. Atg11, the central organizer of selective autophagy, acts as a scaffold protein, interacting with Atg9, Atg1 and other Atg proteins. Our research focuses on finding mutations in Atg11 that specifically disrupt its interaction with Atg9 without affecting its dimerization or interaction with Atg1. We targeted residues 455-535 of Atg11 as a putative Atg9 interaction site, performing mutagenesis on four key residues in this region. The quadruple mutant (Y468A, D516A, L517A, L526A) disrupted Atg11 and Atg9 interaction. However, Y468A, L526A did not, while D516A, L517A showed only partial disruption. We aim to further investigate other potential residues within this region that may be crucial for Atg11 and Atg9 interaction
