    Placing African American museums in the American tourism landscape

    According to the Association of African American Museums (AAAM), there are more than 200 African American history and cultural museums—or other sites with substantial African American collections such as libraries and archives—across the U.S. Many of these museums had their start shortly after the height of the Civil Rights Movement, with a surge in establishments in the 1970s. Black museums serve to decenter White stories of America and refocus on Black experiences. While geographers have studied an array of memory, heritage, and tourism sites, museums remain understudied and under-theorized. Building upon the subfields of Museum geographies—particularly by considering the concept of museums as theatres of pain—and Black geographies, our research examines the ways these museums are integral to the relationships between Black placemaking and the tourism landscape, which remains steeped in anti-Black racism. Using museum exhibit documentation, semi-structured interviews of museum staff, and content analysis of online travel reviews (primarily TripAdvisor and Google Reviews), this paper analyzes two case studies: The National Afro-American Museum and Cultural Center in Wilberforce, Ohio, and The Colored Girls Museum in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Through our two case studies, we show how Black museums enact curatorial practices of commemorative geographies and create redemptive spaces that cultivate not only a homeplace for visitors, particularly for Black Americans and people of the African diaspora but also serve as sites of belonging and joy

    White adipose tissue remodeling in Little Brown Myotis (Myotis lucifugus) with white-nose syndrome

    White-nose syndrome (WNS) is a fungal wildlife disease of bats that has caused precipitous declines in certain Nearctic bat species. A key driver of mortality is premature exhaustion of fat reserves, primarily white adipose tissue (WAT), that bats rely on to meet their metabolic needs during winter. However, the pathophysiological and metabolic effects of WNS have remained ill-defined. To elucidate metabolic mechanisms associated with WNS mortality, we infected a WNS susceptible species, the Little Brown Myotis (Myotis lucifugus), with Pseudogymnoascus destructans (Pd) and collected WAT biopsies for histology and targeted lipidomics. These results were compared to the WNS-resistant Big Brown Bat (Eptesicus fuscus). A similar distribution in broad lipid class was observed in both species, with total WAT primarily consisting of triacylglycerides. Baseline differences in WAT chemical composition between species showed that higher glycerophospholipids (GPs) levels in E. fuscus were dominated by unsaturated or monounsaturated moieties and n-6 (18:2, 20:2, 20:3, 20:4) fatty acids. Conversely, higher GP levels in M. lucifugus WAT were primarily compounds containing n-3 (20:5 and 22:5) fatty acids. Following Pd-infection, we found that perturbation to WAT reserves occurs in M. lucifugus, but not in the resistant E. fuscus. A total of 66 GPs (primarily glycerophosphocholines and glycerophosphoethanolamines) were higher in Pd-infected M. lucifugus, indicating perturbation to the WAT structural component. In addition to changes in lipid chemistry, smaller adipocyte sizes and increased extracellular matrix deposition was observed in Pd-infected M. lucifugus. This is the first study to describe WAT GP composition of bats with different susceptibilities to WNS and highlights that recovery from WNS may require repair from adipose remodeling in addition to replenishing depot fat during spring emergence

    Return on investment: Identifying K-12 funding inequities to improve postsecondary achievement and affordability for marginalized students

    The research investigates persistent inequities in K-12 school funding in Michigan, emphasizingthe correlation between funding disparities and the socioeconomic status of communities. The study highlights how historically segregated communities of color face significant challenges in securing equitable funding compared to predominantly White communities, perpetuating racial inequalities in educational resources. The study explores the impact of funding on key factors affecting student achievement, such as teacher quality, class size, and socio-emotional support, while analyzing the role of parental education attainment in perpetuating intergenerational inequality. Using structural equation modeling, the findings reveal that socioeconomic status significantly influences educational outcomes and per pupil funding has a small to moderate influence depending on demographic group. The findings underscore the need for legislatures to pass progressive funding models and comprehensive policies to enhance equity and support marginalized students in achieving long-term educational success. The study promotes how adequate funding can promote intergenerational economic mobility and improved academic success for all students. The findings also underscore the need for K-12 leaders to revise their policies and practices to position students for success in affording a postsecondary education. The study examines the impact of human resource shortages on students’ ability to receive the K-12 experience necessary to afford, enroll in, persist at, and graduate from a four-year institution of higher education (IHE). The study reinforces the need for 4-year IHE’s to support students of color to succeed in rigorous coursework specific to their degree and beyond the typical first two years of general education courses

    The purpose of this paper is to examine the role of emotional marketing in enhancing brand engagement, particularly how emotionally resonant campaigns can strengthen loyalty and foster connections. Through the analysis of specific examples, including Extra Gum’s Can\u27t Help Falling in Love, Coca-Cola’s “The Great Meal” campaign, Spotify Wrapped, and Google Year in Search, this research will delve deeper into the way brands really connect with their target markets. These experiences directly tap into human emotions, which helps create a sense of belonging. Each campaign uses different emotions to resonate with their key audiences. The brands used in this paper, Extra Gum, Coca-Cola, Spotify, and Google, were all chosen to represent different industries that we will interact with on a daily basis. Extra’s campaign represents the timelessness of the memories created with your partner, from the beginning of the relationship. The campaign evoked feelings of love and happiness. Coca-Cola’s campaign was launched during an expected change of all of our lives: the pandemic. The campaign was designed to unite people in a comforting way. Spotify Wrapped leveraged data to inspire users to share their listening habits and favorite songs to foster one community. Lastly, Google’s Year in Search 2022 compiled globally significant moments to evoke feelings of empathy and self-reflection. This paper also explores the influence of AI on emotional marketing. AI has an incredible ability to predict emotional responses through data-driven insights. Marketers can use this to create extremely personalizes brand experiences, which in turn, can lead to higher brand engagement and loyalty

    Meromorphic continuations of Euler products with polynomial growth coefficients

    In this paper, we investigate the meromorphic continuation of Euler products, with a particular focus on those with polynomial growth coefficients. Building upon the classical example of the Riemann zeta function, we derive conditions under which Euler products can be extended beyond their regions of convergence to broader domains of the complex plane, revealing singularities and deepening our understanding of their analytic properties. We begin by establishing a framework for meromorphic continuation and then introduce a general theorem that applies to Euler products of the form where the coefficients and exponents satisfy specific constraints. We prove that such Euler products converge absolutely in certain regions and possess meromorphic continuations to open neighborhoods of these regions, with singularities characterized by the maximum of certain critical exponents. The Factorization Method, which involves factoring out copies of the Riemann zeta function, is employed to prove the meromorphic continuation results
