    Spectral density estimation for random processes with stationary increments

    Spectral density analysis plays an important role in studying a stationary random process on a real line. In this paper, we extend this discussion for the random process with stationary increments. We investigate the properties of the method of moments structure function estimation, and propose a nonparametric spectral density function estimator. Our numerical results show that the proposed spectral density estimator performs comparable with the parametric counterpart when the underlying process is assumed to be band-limited. Additionally, this method is applied to analyze US Housing Starts Data, where the hidden periodicities are detected, providing consistent conclusions with previous economic studies

    Alcohol-involved rape: Limitations of the rape exception for abortion access

    Objective: In June 2022, the U.S. Supreme Court removed federal abortion protections, giving individual states the authority to enact abortion regulations. Since that ruling, many states have enacted abortion bans; however, several of these states allow “rape exceptions,” theoretically providing rape victims who become pregnant access to abortion services. Notably, alcohol use by the rape victim and perpetrator is common. In this brief report, we describe findings from research on alcohol-involved rape that have the potential to impact the utility of rape exceptions. Method: In this synthesis of the research literature pertaining to alcohol-involved rape victimization and perpetration, we focus on key concepts detailed in extant research likely relevant to accessing abortion services through rape exceptions. Results: Victim alcohol intoxication may limit the use of rape exceptions to abortion bans by delaying rape acknowledgment, increasing victim blame, undermining victim credibility, and deterring rape reporting. Commensurately, perpetrator alcohol intoxication may increase the need for victims to access abortion services by reducing perpetrator condom use during rape and increasing other sexually aggressive acts such as nonconsensual condom removal. Conclusions: Research evidence suggests that alcohol-involved rape incidents present critical obstacles to utilizing statutory rape exceptions to banned abortion services beyond challenges that non-alcohol-involved rape survivors are also likely to experience. Rape survivors from oppressed communities (e.g., people of color, gender minorities, and/or sexual minorities) may be disproportionately impacted. Empirical investigations specifically examining how substance use during rape impacts reproductive health care accessibility are paramount for informing health care providers, law enforcement, legal practitioners, and policymakers

    Functional traits mediate the elevational patterns of functional diversity and community structure of mosses in a tropical mountain area

    Functional diversity refers to the value, range, and distribution of functional traits within a community, such as the morphological, physiological and behavioral characteristics of species that determine the role a species plays in an ecosystem. Assessing the drivers of elevational pattern of functional diversity is crucial to predict the effects of global change on functional diversity and community structure. In our research, we collected mosses species data from 65 sampling sites and measured 11 functional traits that are related to their ecological functions. We applied double canonical correspondence analysis (DCCA) to analyze species responses to environmental conditions based on their traits. We applied generalized additive models with a Gaussian function of variance to determine the elevational patterns of functional trait composition, diversity and community structure. We applied and compared boosted regression trees (BRT) without considering functional traits and piecewise structural equation modelling (SEM) mediated with functional traits to relate environmental variables with functional diversity and functional community structure, respectively. We found the first DCCA axis accounted for the largest dissimilarities between the two groups of species and correlated mainly with the water-utilization traits. Although both functional diversity and community structure displayed negatively skewed pattern along the elevational gradient, habitat complexity and climatic variables contributed differently to their respective patterns. The SEM approach consistently outperformed the BRT approach in explaining the variations in both functional diversity and community structure. Our findings highlight the important role of functional traits in mediating the relationship between the environment and functional diversity metrics. Both biotic and abiotic processes play a significant role in shaping the community assemblages, with environmental variables having distinct impacts. Traits related to structure maintenance, water absorption, cell hydration, and nutrient acquisition were found to be key drivers of functional diversity, while water-utilization traits were mainly responsible for regulating functional community structure

    A comparative study on fundamental movement skills among children with autism spectrum disorder and typically developing children aged 7-10

    Background: Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental condition with unique differences in social interaction, communication, and a spectrum of behavioral characteristics. In the past, motor disturbance in individuals with ASD has not been considered a significant core deficit due to the predominant focus on sociability and communication issues. However, recent studies indicate that motor deficits are indeed associated with the fundamental symptoms of ASD. As there is limited research on the motor behavior of children with ASD, particularly in China, the objective of this study is to investigate the development of fundamental movement skills (FMS) in children with ASD and compare them to typically developing children. Method: The study recruited 108 children with ASD (87 boys, 21 girls) aged 7–10 years from two special education rehabilitation centers in Wuhan, China. For comparison, a control group of 108 typically developing children, matched by age and gender, was randomly selected from three local primary schools. FMS were assessed using the Movement Assessment Battery for Children - Second Edition (MABC-2), which evaluates manual dexterity, aiming and catching, as well as static and dynamic balance. Group differences on MABC-2 percentile scores were analyzed using descriptive statistics and Mann–Whitney U test. Effect sizes were also calculated for practical significance. Results: Findings from the study showed that a significant majority, around 80%, of children with ASD either displayed motor challenges or were at risk of developing such delays. When comparing to their typically developing peers, children with ASD scored notably lower in areas of manual dexterity, ball skills, and both static and dynamic balance (with all these findings being statistically significant at p \u3c 0.001). Interestingly, gender did not show a significant influence on these results (p \u3e 0.05). Conclusion: In addition to addressing the other skill development areas outlined in the diagnostic manual for ASD, clinicians diagnosing and treating children with ASD should also assess the presence of motor skill development. For individuals with ASD who have co-existing motor difficulties, it is essential to offer evidence-based interventions tailored to their specific needs

    This special issue is the result of the Michigan Center for Contextual Factors in Alzheimer’s Disease (MCCFAD) third Summer Data Immersion (SDI) program held on May 23–26, 2022. Thirty-seven researchers from 17 universities participated in the program, which emphasized racial/ethnic and other contextual factors in the study of Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias (ADRD) costs using a team science approach. During the program, data from the Health and Retirement Study were used to investigate multiple topics related to both financial and non-financial costs of ADRD including: (1) life course socioeconomic factors, (2) costs of preclinical ADRD, (3) COVID-19, (4) family members’ employment outcomes, (5) geographic contexts, (6) monetary value of unpaid ADRD care, and (7) spousal relations for couples living with ADRD
