Understanding the impact of a short-term study away course on the leadership development of women graduate students
No full textThis dissertation explores the transformative impact of short-term study away courses on women\u27s leadership development in graduate education. Through a qualitative, case study approach, it investigates the experiences of women graduate students (n = 8) participating in an all-women study away course, aiming to uncover the factors that contribute most significantly to their learning and leadership growth. The study develops a conceptual model integrating theories of intersectionality, leadership identity development, and transformative learning, providing a comprehensive framework for understanding the complex interplay of personal and intersectional identities in leadership development. Findings reveal the profound influence of immersive learning experiences, highlighting the benefits of temporarily stepping away from familiar environments to engage in face-to-face interactions and experiential learning. The research underscores the importance of inclusivity and diversity in leadership education, emphasizing the role of representation, diverse role models, and inclusive curricula in fostering women\u27s leadership development. Furthermore, the study identifies the empowering role of all-women cohorts in overcoming gender-related challenges and creating a supportive environment for women\u27s leadership growth, exemplified by the observed Empowerment Effect. The findings contribute new insights to the discourse on women\u27s leadership development, informing the design of targeted and effective programs that cater to the unique needs and experiences of graduate women. In an era analyzing diversity, equity, and inclusion, this research holds significant implications for reshaping educational approaches and promoting more affirming, tailored, and impactful initiatives in women\u27s leadership education
Synthesis of dihydro-β-carbolines by tandem C-H activation and aza-Michael reaction in the presence of Rh(II)/squaramide catalysis: Investigation of the mechanism via computational methods
Get PDFN-heterocycles are the major component of various bioactive natural products, pharmaceuticals, and their precursors. In particularly, β-carbolines are examples of substituted indole and its derivatives that serve as the basic structures of diverse, therapeutically important molecules with broad pharmacological properties. Rajasekar and Anbarasan have suggested a novel one-pot synthesis for dihydro-β-carbolines involving more than one catalytic system: a rhodium acetate dimer for C-H insertion on the indole and a basic organo-catalyst for the subsequent aza-Michael addition. The product can be obtained enantioselectively by using a chiral squaramide as the organo-catalyst. Since the mechanism of this reaction, including the rate determining step, has not been explored by either experimental or computational methods, the purpose of this study is to model the catalytic cycle and delineate the energetics of the reaction pathway. We have determined the structure of all intermediates and several transition states and calculated relative activation barriers using density functional theory (DFT) methods as implemented in the Gaussian suite of programs. We find that the nitrogen extrusion step has the highest activation barrier of those determined so far
Sense of belonging and accommodations in students with disabilities in higher education
Get PDFThe purpose of this study was to look at how students with disabilities\u27 sense of belonging can be affected by the support they receive in higher education. The study included a survey sent out via email to Eastern Michigan\u27s DRC in the fall of 2022. The support students receive can be from faculty, staff or peers at the institution. A student\u27s sense of belonging can affect many different aspects of their life and having people to support them can help them to feel more included and valued. This study also investigated the effects students felt Covid-19 had on their academic performance. Recent research articles about similar ideas were compared in this study
Financial regulation in the age of AI
Get PDFArtificial intelligence has been playing an increasingly important role in the function of financial markets since the 1980s and the inception of program trading. The technology has evolved and has reached a more adolescent phase of development. As the technology has evolved, the risks introduced by massive algorithms keeping the markets humming have become more evident. The relationship between market volatility and trading volume adds risk as the speed and size of the trading activity has increased. High-frequency trading algorithms, while developed and refined by highly sophisticated institutions, still are at risk of succumbing to human error. Overall, algorithmic trading has benefitted the financial markets in several ways, specifically efficiency. However, the role of market regulators is to protect investors from undue harm. Therefore, there are steps that the government and regulatory agencies could take to help guard the markets from risks posed by algorithmic trading. While regulators can help lower risk, the technology quickly evolves, and not all risks can be contained. It is not the role of regulators to eliminate risk but it is their role to mitigate it in any feasible way

Look discusses his personal growth in the fraternity and at EMU, and expresses his appreciation for EMU Dean of Men, James Bingo Brown. Look also talks about the presence of the Arm of Honor Fraternity in the coaching field in Michigan. Look emphasizes the importance of a sense of belonging in a community in which all members are mutually supportive. Graduating from Walled Lake High School, Look retraces his journey to EMU, including his father\u27s occupation in the entertainment industry and his own plans for a different life for himself. Look attributes his interest in sports broadcasting to listening to Mel Ott and Van Patrick on the radio as a child. Look also recalls his surprise to be dorm mates with four Black men, the first Black people he had ever associated with. Look also speaks of Gilbert Gregory, an Arm brother on the Autism spectrum, and describes the day that the Homecoming float caught fire during the Homecoming parade. On his pledge ride, Look was taken to Canada and dropped off. Get PDFHamzah Dajani is an international student from Jordan studying finance and accounting, and he currently serves as the Student Government President at Eastern Michigan University. In this interview, Dajani recounts his experience growing up in Jordan, how he became interested in math and finance, and how he decided to come to EMU. Dajani explains how he got involved in Student Government, his experience as an international student, the difficulties of adjusting to life in the United States, and the struggles of finding a job as a non-US citizen. Dajani describes how Student Government became involved in the Afghan resettlement process, helping move the Afghan families into on-campus housing, talking to the Afghan’s about their experience fleeing to the US, and his own experiences working with refugees prior to the Afghan resettlement.https://commons.emich.edu/oral_histories/1164/thumbnail.jp
