A New Discrimination Method for Washi Paper Materials ―Using a High-Resolution Digital Microscope VHX-8000―
Since the characteristics of plant ligament fibers are directly related to the properties of paper, it is important to identify the characteristics of each ligament fiber. However, it is difficult even for skilled people to identify washi from its external characteristics, and it is thought that washi was judged by qualitative evaluation methods such as looking through it as a texture of the washi surface, identifying the paper's non-uniformity, and visually evaluating its surface irregularities, luster, color, and tactile feel. After the development of optical technology, quantitative evaluation methods based on measured values became possible by measuring fiber shape, cell wall thickness, lumen, cell wall-like patterns, parenchyma cells, fiber width, fiber length, presence of fiber knots, luster, and color tone, etc., and more accurate discrimination became possible. However, most of these objective evaluation methods involve physical or chemical destruction of the specimen, and not all of them are applicable to classical manuscripts, old brush cuttings, literary works, and works of art, which are used as specimens by the author. Taking advantage of optical nondestructive observation, we have confirmed that the application of polarized light observation as one of the new ways to use observation equipment, which has been overlooked in the past, can yield new findings not obtained by conventional observation, and we report our findings in this preliminary report.departmental bulletin pape

Japanese Culture Review: An Active Learning Course at a Japanese Women’s University
Globalization and active learning have been the focus of many university curricula the past decade as institutions aim to develop programs to ensure Japanese students keep pace globally with their international counterparts. This report describes a 14-week semester course at a women’s university in Tokyo that is designed to implement these two popular elements. The rationale, methods of implementation, and the results of an end-of-term student questionnaire concerning the course will be reviewed to show how active learning can be utilized to teach a content-based English as a foreign language course.「国際化」と「アクティブ・ラーニング」は、日本人学生が、外国人と遭遇した際にグローバルな対応ができる能力を養成するためのプログラムの開発をめざして、過去10年の間、多くの大学の重点目標であった。 departmental bulletin pape

Dialoguing with Future Language Teachers: Interviews with Students of the Faculty of Arts at the University of Curaçao, Dr. Moises Da Costa Gomez
As part of an ongoing research project, I surveyed and conducted interviews with students as well as faculty members at the University of Curaçao, Dr. Moises Da Costa Gomez. A primary theme was aspects of student and faculty life in Curaçao. In this report, I will focus on the student experience. I start with a brief introduction to the island of Curaçao and the university. I then proceed with an overview of the survey responses that supply demographic information about the student participants and their views on being a student. Finally, I detail a range of responses using the students’ original voices to create a vivid description of life as a university student in Curaçao.departmental bulletin pape
