    The Impact of Customer Familiarity on the Effectiveness of Food Waste Reduction Messages: Boundary Conditions of Message Framing and Abstraction Level

    食品ロス削減は、家庭系のみならず事業系においても喫緊の課題であるが、外食産業における食品ロスは、主として調理過程での廃棄と顧客による食べ残しに起因する。本研究では、外食時の食べ残し削減を目的とし、環境啓発メッセージが消費者の適量注文意向に及ぼす影響を、メッセージ・フレーミング(肯定的・否定的)および解釈レベル理論(抽象度:高次・低次)の観点から検討した。  分析の結果、新規顧客においては、メッセージの正負に関わらず抽象度の主効果のみが有意であり、具体的な内容よりも抽象的なメッセージが適量注文意向を有意に高めることが示された。一方、既存顧客においては、フレーミングと抽象度の間に有意な交互作用が確認された。具体的には、肯定的なフレーミングには抽象的なメッセージが、否定的なフレーミングには具体的なメッセージが適合し、それぞれの条件下で適量注文意向が促進されるという特有の傾向が明らかになった。  本結果は、新規顧客には高次の解釈レベルに訴求する抽象的メッセージが有効である一方、既存顧客にはフレーミングと抽象度の「適合性」が重要であるという、顧客の習熟度に応じた境界条件の存在を示唆している。Food waste reduction is a pressing challenge not only for households but also for the business sector. In the food service industry, food waste primarily stems from preparation losses and customer leftovers. This study aims to reduce leftovers during dining out by examining the impact of environmental awareness messages on consumers' intentions for moderate ordering, focusing on message framing(positive vs. negative)and its interaction with Construal Level Theory(level of abstraction). The results of the analysis revealed that the effectiveness of message framing is fundamentally moderated by the level of abstraction and the customer’s familiarity with the restaurant. For new customers, message framing(positive vs. negative)did not yield a significant main effect; instead, the main effect of abstraction level was dominant. Regardless of whether the frame was positive or negative, abstract messages significantly increased moderate ordering intentions compared to concrete ones. In contrast, for repeat customers, a significant interaction between framing and abstraction level was observed. Specifically, positive framing was more effective when paired with abstract messages, while negative framing was more effective when combined with concrete messages, indicating a "matching effect" that enhances persuasive impact. These findings suggest the existence of boundary conditions where message effectiveness shifts according to customer familiarity: while high-level construal(abstract messaging)is universally effective for new customers, the congruency between framing and abstraction is crucial for repeat customers. This study provides novel insights for optimizing communication strategies by aligning message structures with the psychological distance and construal levels of different target segments.departmental bulletin pape

    The Effects of Calling on Work Engagement, Well-Being, and Turnover Intention: A Longitudinal Study of Japanese University Graduates in Regular Employment

    近年、仕事の意味づけとして「天職(calling)」が注目されているが、既存研究は欧米中心であり、日本を含むアジア圏の就業文脈における実証的知見は限られている。本研究は、日本の大卒正社員を対象として、天職感が仕事および人生に関する心理的アウトカムに及ぼす影響を縦断的に検討した。2 時点(間隔半年)で回答が得られた1,113 名を対象に、Brief Calling Scale(BCSPresence)の中央値を基準として天職感高群・低群に分類し、半年後のワーク・エンゲージメント、ウェルビーイング、離職意向について群間比較を行った。分析の結果、天職感高群は低群と比較して、ワーク・エンゲージメントおよびウェルビーイングが有意に高く、効果量はいずれも大きかった(d = 0.97, d = 0.85)。一方、離職意向については有意差が認められたものの、効果量は小程度(d = 0.28)にとどまった。これらの結果から、天職感は日本の就業文脈においても個人の仕事への没頭や人生の充実と強く結びつく心理的資源である一方、その影響の大きさは成果変数の種類によって異なることが示された。本研究は、欧米中心に蓄積されてきた天職研究をアジア圏の実証データによって補完するとともに、縦断デザインを用いて天職感の効果の持続性を検討した点で、天職研究の知見を拡張するものと考えられる。While the concept of a calling has attracted growing scholarly attention as a source of meaning in work, existing empirical research remains predominantly Western-centric, with limited evidence from Asian employment contexts, particularly Japan. This study longitudinally examines the role of a sense of calling in shaping psychological work and life outcomes among Japanese university graduates in regular employment. Data were collected from 1,113 participants at two time points separated by a six-month interval. Participants were classified into high- and low-calling groups based on the median score of the Brief Calling Scale (BCS-Presence), and group differences in work engagement, well-being, and turnover intention measured six months later were analyzed. The results showed that individuals in the highcalling group reported significantly higher levels of work engagement and well-being than those in the low-calling group, with large effect sizes( d = 0.97, d = 0.85). In contrast, although turnover intention was significantly lower in the high-calling group, the effect size was small (d = 0.28). These findings indicate that within the Japanese employment context, a sense of calling functions as a robust psychological resource strongly associated with work immersion and life fulfillment, while its magnitude varies across outcome domains. By providing longitudinal evidence from an Asian context, this study extends the calling literature and deepens understanding of the temporal stability of calling-related outcomes.departmental bulletin pape

    The Han-Xiongnu Relations and the Former Han Dynasty's Countermeasure toward the Xiongnu in the Early Period

    景帝期までの漢王朝は、匈奴に対して和親を基本とする消極策をとったとされてきたが、近年は文帝・景帝が積極策をとったことが指摘されている。本稿では、それらを踏まえて景帝期までの両者の関係と漢朝の対匈奴策を検討した。高祖から高后期までは、漢と匈奴の間で遊牧社会の君主とその配偶者との関係を利用した政治的駆け引きがあったが、通商関係の安定によって和親は保たれた。高后期末からの匈奴の勢力拡大を背景に文帝期から関市貿易が始まると、文帝は賈誼の献策にもとづいて匈奴への内部工作を進めたが、匈奴は大規模侵攻で対抗し、和親の締結と破綻が繰り返され、漢朝では鼂錯が指摘した軍事的な問題が顕在化した。景帝は、文帝の策を継承する一方、軍事的な問題にも対応し一定の成果を得たが、匈奴側も漢朝への内部工作を強め漢側に一定の影響力を持つようになり、両者の関係は緊張していた。武帝がどのように攻勢に転じたのかを解明するのが今後の課題である。Generally, the Former Han Dynasty took passive countermeasures based on Heqin 和親 toward the Xiongnu 匈奴. However, according to recent research, Emperor Wen 文帝and Emperor Jing 景帝took proactive countermeasures. In this paper, reconsidering the Han- Xiongnu relations and the Han Dynasty's countermeasures toward the Xiongnu in the early period with reference to recent research. From the time of Emperor Gao-zu 高祖 to the time of Empress Lü 呂后, although the Han and the Xiongnu engaged in political maneuvering that focused on the relationship between the monarch of nomadic society and his spouse, peace was maintained by the stability trade relations. Against the backdrop of the expansion of the Xiongnu from late time of Empress Lü, Emperor Wen initiated trade with the Xiongnu in the Guan-shi 關市, on the other hand, he carried out internal operations against the Xiongnu based on Jia-Yi 賈誼's advices. The Xiongnu launched large-scale military invasions in response to that. Therefore the peace treaties were repeatedly concluded and broken, several military problems pointed out by Chao-Cuo 鼂錯 became apparent in the Han Dynasuty. Emperor Jing was inheriting Emperor Wen's countermeasures, made progress in addressing military problems and achieved certain results. To counter that, the Xiongnu also carried out internal operations against the Han Dynasty, came to have some influence in the Han Dynasty. Therefore the relations between the two were tense. Clarifying how the Emperor Wu 武帝 switched to an offensive strategy against the Xiongnu is a subject for future research.departmental bulletin pape

    The Impact of English-Medium Mock Teaching on Pre-Service Teachers' Self-Perception and Multilingual Identity

    This qualitative study investigated an English-medium mock lesson's immediate impact on Japanese pre-service English teachers' self-perception, emotional state, and evolving professional identity. Six participants enrolled in a teaching methods course completed a 20- minute English-medium mock lesson, followed by an open-ended questionnaire. This study's findings revealed a significant emotional shift among participants, from an initial state of anxiety to one characterized by post-lesson accomplishment and pride. The participants redefined their roles, from mere language learners to active language facilitators. While few participants adopted a “multilingual” identity, their experiences profoundly changed their understanding of teaching and reinforced the belief that the practical use of English is paramount to instruction. This study contributes to the development of effective teacher-training programs aimed at fostering stronger professional and linguistic identities.departmental bulletin pape

    Making Games, Making Communicators: Engaging Social Sciences and Humanities(SSH) Students through Serious Game Design in Japanese Higher Education

    Public engagement with science and technology( S&T) suffers from participation gaps, with those from social sciences and humanities (SSH)backgrounds historically underrepresented as both audiences and participants in science communication. In Japan, rigid educational tracking into STEM or SSH fields by late high school contributes to mutual indifference between these domains, leaving SSH students disengaged from S&T topics. This article explores an intervention addressing this gap: a practice-based course in which Japanese undergraduate SSH students design serious analog games on socio-technical issues. I draw on a multi-year educational practice at a women’s university in Japan (2020–2023) involving approximately 22 SSH undergraduates each year in a semester-long serious game design course. Data sources included classroom observations, students’ design artifacts, reflection essays, and focus group interviews with former participants (conducted two years postcourse). Qualitative findings suggest that researching issues, iterating prototypes, and refining rules fostered stakeholder perspective-taking, raised interest in S&T, and increased confidence in discussing science–society dilemmas. Students reported growing ownership and facilitation skills that supported dialogue on an equal footing, challenging expert–layperson hierarchies. Several teams voluntarily brought games to science events and facilitated visitor conversations, reinforcing an identity shift from passive learners to public-facing dialogue facilitators.departmental bulletin pape
