    Opening Classrooms and Broadening Minds: Balancing Cultural Assumptions and Intercultural Competence Awareness

    Much attention is given to issues of classroom management and how to improve overall conditions for learners and educators to learn and teach more effectively. But how often, when entering classrooms as educators or learners, are deeper cultural underpinnings taken into account that might ultimately bear upon the greater classroom learning experience? As a positive attribute, cultural variability can add richness and depth to classrooms. However, this paper steps back to consider the reverse: cultural influences can have detrimental effects and can be impediments to creating learning environments that are truly open and encouraging to the self-growth of all participants. This also has the effect of creating additional challenges for raising awareness of intercultural competence (IC) and encouraging its usage for developing not only more selfempowering and egalitarian classrooms but also more humanistic attributes such as empathy, tolerance, acceptance, and open-mindedness towards members of other cultural communities outside one’s own. Several cultural variables imbuing Japanese society, including high uncertainty avoidance (HUA) and high context communication culture (HCC), are examined from the perspective of inhibitors of IC facilitation when allowed to predominate in the classroom. As part of a counterbalance to help offset these less desirable effects in Japanese EFL classrooms, this paper goes back to the classroom itself and looks at ways of increasing learner awareness, skill development, and opportunities for actively promoting IC both in and outside the classroom. It is from this juncture that an ultimately reimagined concept of classroom, participant roles, and learning is advocated to create a more barrier-free (both mental and physical) learning space for nurturing the elements that can help foster IC growth and development between both learners and educators.departmental bulletin pape

    Buddhist Views of Humanity in Contemporary Japanese Subcultures: Focusing on a Comic, Commercial Film, and Television Drama

    本稿では、現代日本のサブカルチャーにおける仏教的人間観について、漫画『町田君の世界』とコマーシャルフィルム「なーちゃんシリーズ」、そしてテレビドラマ『過保護のカホコ』を取り上げて考察した。『町田くんの世界』の町田一とCF「なーちゃんシリーズ」のなーちゃんの二人に共通する性格として仏教の「慈悲」を読み取ることが出来た。また『過保護のカホコ』の嘉穂子は、『法華経』に出てくる常不軽菩薩に通底する生き方を見ることが出来た。This study examines Buddhist views of humanity in contemporary Japanese subcultures,using the comic “Machida-kun no Sekai (Mr. Machida’s World),” a commercial film “Naa-chan Series,” and television drama “Kahogo no Kahoko (Overprotective Kahoko).” The analysis demonstrates the maitrī (compassion) of Bhuddhism as a common trait between Hajime Machida in “Machida-kun no Sekai” and Naa-chan who is the protagonist of the “Naa-chan Series.” In addition, Kahoko’s way of life in “Kahogo no Kahoko” resembles a Bodhisattva such as Sadāparibhūta in The Lotus Sūtra.departmental bulletin pape

    Self-evaluation of swallowing function in community-dwelling older adults

    【目的】地域在住高齢者を対象に実施した摂食・嚥下に関する自覚と摂食・嚥下障害スクリーニング結果から,地域在住高齢者の摂食・嚥下障害における早期発見,早期介入を促進するための方法を提案することである. 【方法】65 歳以上地域在住高齢者を対象とし,基本属性,摂食嚥下の状況,摂食・嚥下障害スクリーニング,主観的健康感,食品摂取の多様性,MNA-SF の質問紙調査を実施した.分析は自身の摂食・嚥下の状況について「自覚あり群」「自覚なし群」の2 群に分類し,実施した. 【結果】分析対象者は45 名であり,「自覚あり群」は15 名(33.3% ),「自覚なし群」は30 名(66.7% ) であった.「自覚あり群」は,摂食・嚥下機能の低下が認められ,咀嚼の困難さや飲み込みにくさ,むせを感じている割合が有意に高かった.また,「自覚あり群」は主観的健康感が有意に低かった. 【結論】高齢者が自らの嚥下の状況に関心を持ち,異常に気づくことが,地域在住高齢者の摂食・嚥下障害における早期発見,早期介入を促進するための第一段階となることが示された.そのためには,医療や保健に従事する専門職が摂食・嚥下に関する教育や啓発を広く行うとともに,病院や調剤薬局,行政機関,介護予防教室等のさまざまな場所で専門職が高齢者に声をかけながら,摂食・嚥下の相談にのることができる機会を増やすことが重要である.【Objective】To elucidate a method for early detection of and intervention for dysphagia in community-dwelling older adults by promoting awareness through screening. 【Methods】A questionnaire survey on basic characteristics, swallowing status, swallowing screening, subjective health,diversity of food intake, and Mini Nutritional Assessment-Short Form (MNA-SF) was administered to communitydwelling older adults aged ≥65 years. In this analysis, respondents were classified into two groups based on their awareness of their swallowing inclinations: awareness and non-awareness groups. 【Results】The data of 45 participants were analyzed. The awareness group comprised 15 participants (33.3%) and the non-awareness group comprised 30 participants (66.7%). Swallowing function was reduced in the awareness group. In addition, the proportion of individuals who experienced difficulty in swallowing was significantly higher in this group.The awareness group also had significantly lower subjective health scores than the non-awareness group. 【Conclusions】Studies have shown that the proactive involvement of community-dwelling older adults in monitoring their own swallowing ability and recognizing abnormalities constitutes the first step in facilitating early detection and intervention for eating and swallowing disorders. Therefore, it is necessary for medical and healthcare professionals to disseminate education and awareness on eating and swallowing issues. Moreover, professionals should extend their support to older adults across various settings such as hospitals, dispensing pharmacies, government agencies, and preventive care classes. It is important to increase the opportunities for unreserved discussions regarding feeding and swallowing issues.departmental bulletin pape

    Potentials of Classroom Debate in Higher Education Institutions: Japanese Evidence-based Debate Practices and Analysis of the Questionnaire Results

    本研究は短期大学の授業で実践した教室内ディベートを一例に、教育ディベートの意義と課題について考察するものである。学生へのアンケート調査を分析した結果、教室内ディベートの経験はコミュニケーション能力の獲得だけでなく、社会問題への関心を高め、意見を主張する際に役立つものだと履修者が認識していることが明らかとなった。社会へ出る前に「議論のベース」を身につける場として教室内ディベートが有効であることを主張する。This study examines the significance and issues of debate education by providing examples of university classroom debate practices. The analysis of the questionnaire results demonstrated that the students realized their interest in social problems and confidence in stating their own opinions through experiencing classroom debates. Therefore, classroom debates can help students acquire the rudimentary skills in addition to other communication skills.departmental bulletin pape

    本研究はラジオのあり方の変化を探ることを目的に、「ラジオがどのように若者に聴かれているのか」「聴取者の若者にとってラジオとはどのような存在なのか」という問いを設定し、女子短期大学生へのインタビュー調査を通して考察したものである。その結果、今回の調査対象者には、従来のラジオ聴取の特徴とは違った聴き方がみられ、ラジオの聴き方が多様化していることが示唆された。departmental bulletin pape
