An Attempt to Develop an Automated Evaluation System for Paragraph Writing of Pre-intermediate Learners of English: Part 3 ―Analysis of a System for Evaluating the Quality of English Text Using Generative AI
Full text link短期大学1 年生向け英語必修科目で実施してきたイティングテストのデータを用いた自動評価システムを開発した．生成AI の大規模言語モデル（GPT-4o）に過去の学生の英文エッセイ1611 件と教師評価を学習させ，自動採点システムを作成し，前年度まで開発していた人工知能の機械学習の「教師あり学習」モデルとその精度を比較検証した．自動評価システムは英文の「内容の質」のみを評価対象とし，4 段階の評価を行う．生成AI モデルと機械学習モデルの両方で2024 年度の英語必修科目のライティングテストの英文129 件を評価したところ，生成AI モデル（GPT-4o）では，教師評価との一致率が83.7% であった．一方，機械学習モデルでは教師評価との一致率が59.7% であった．生成AI モデルによる自動評価システムを授業内で学生に使用させた上でアンケート調査を行い，それをテキストマイニングで分析した．We developed an automated evaluation system using data from writing tests conducted in a compulsory English course for first-year junior college students. A generative AI model（ GPT-4o） was trained on 1,611 English essays written by past students，along with their corresponding teacher evaluations，to create an automated evaluation system. Its performance was then compared to a supervised machine learning model developed in previous years. The automated evaluation system assessed only the “quality of content” of the English essays，using a 4-level scale. Both，the generative AI，and machine learning models，were used to evaluate 129 English essays from the 2024 academic yearʼs compulsory English writing test. The generative AI model （GPT-4o） achieved an agreement rate of 83.7% with teacher evaluation. In contrast，the machine learning model revealed an agreement rate of 59.7% with teacher evaluations. An Overview of “Integrated English” for the First-Year English Education at a Junior College: Reflecting on the Changes Over the Past Nine Years
Full text link東京の短期大学 1 年生必修英語科目における 9 年間の教育実践を振り返る．2014 年度からの 4 年間（第 1 期）は，学生の英文ライティングに対する期待および日本人学生の典型的なエラーを調査した．2018 年度からの第 2 期は，国際教育ネットワークへの投稿を含む様々な方法を活用した英文発信力向上プログラムの実践と分析を行った．2019 年度以降の第 3 期は，筆者ら 2 名による学生のライティング英文を対象とした共同研究が行われた．習熟度別で事前・事後の英文の語数，構成，文法，内容の観点で比較分析を行う中で，英文の「内容の質」にかかわる明確な評価基準がないことが確認された．「内容の質」の妥当性・信頼性のある評価基準を確立するために，外部評価者による「全体的評価」と筆者ら 2 名による「分析的評価」を相関分析し，これを学生に配布する「ルーブリック」に反映させた．また「内容の質」を評価する自動評価システムの開発を行った．2022 年度までは人工知能の「機械学習」を用いたシステムを開発したが，教師評価との一致率が 60％前後に留まっていた．そこで 2024 年度に生成 AI を自動評価システムに導入したところ，教師評価との一致率が 83.7% まで上がった．終わりに短期大学最後の 1 年生の英語必修科目における英文ライティングに関する学生アンケート結果を紹介する．This study reviews nine years of pedagogical practice in a required first-year English course at a junior college in Tokyo. The first phase （2014-2017） focused on investigating students' expectations regarding English writing and identifying common errors among Japanese learners. The second phase （2018-2019） implemented and analyzed a program designed to enhance students' English communicative competence through various methods, including submissions to an international education network. The third phase （2019 onward）involved a collaborative study by the authors analyzing students' essays. Comparative analysis of pre- and post-test writing in terms of word count, organization, grammar, and content across different proficiency levels revealed the absence of clear evaluation criteria for the "quality of content. "To develop a valid and reliable measure for the quality of content, the authors conducted a correlation analysis between "holistic assessments" by external scorers and our "analytical assessments," incorporating findings into a student rubric. Furthermore, the authors developed an automated system to evaluate the quality of content. A machine-learning system developed until 2022 achieved only an around 60% agreement with teacher assessments. However, the integration of generative AI in 2024 increased this agreement to 83.7%. Finally, this study will introduce the results of a student survey on English writing in the required English course for first-year students during the 2023 academic year, the final year of the junior college.departmental bulletin pape
The Significance and Effectiveness of Introducing “Plain Japanese” in University Education: A Study Based on Educational Practice at a Junior College
Full text link本稿は大学教育におけるやさしい日本語導入の意義とその効果について、複数の教育実践例をもとに検討した。まず、やさしい日本語の位置づけや国内におけるやさしい日本語の取り組み事例を見た上で、吉開による活動内容とその要点を確認した。そして、本学でのレクチャーやゼミ活動等での教育実践を通して、国際的な学びを専門としていない2 年課程の短期大学部の学生が多文化共生への理解を深めたり、自ら情報発信したりできる姿勢を培えることを検証するとともに、今後の課題を確認した。This paper examines the significance and effectiveness of incorporating “Plain Japanese” （Yasashii Nihongo） in university education, drawing on various practical examples. First, we reviewed the role of Plain Japanese and its implementation cases in Japan, with a particular focus on Yoshikai's activities and key points. Through educational practices such as lectures and seminar activities at our college, we demonstrated that students in a two-year junior college program, even without a specialization in international studies, could deepen their understanding of multicultural coexistence and develop independent information dissemination skills.
