Whereabouts of the Hotel Existence: Past, Present, and Future in Paul Auster’s Brooklyn Tales
Paul Auster’s The Brooklyn Follies and Sunset Park can be viewed as the “Brooklyn tales,” because the borough serves as the setting for both novels. Through a careful analysis of the two tales, this study shows the change in Brooklyn after the financial crisis of the late 2000s from the perspective of the main characters’ recognition of the borough. To this end, first analyzing The New York Trilogy, which unfolds in Brooklyn and Manhattan, demonstrates how Auster contrasts the two boroughs. In Auster’s fiction, Brooklyn is associated with diversity, collectivity, and the promise of a better future, while Manhattan represents separation and individualism. This view of Brooklyn is reinforced by the utopian idea of the Hotel Existence, which serves as a metaphor for the borough in The Brooklyn Follies. However, the conclusion of Sunset Park proves that the economic depression has turned utopia into dystopia, where people are forced to live separately and without promising prospects.Bulletin論文Articledepartmental bulletin pape
Methodology of Approaches to the Origin of Life on Earth: An Extraterrestrial Approach
生命誕生へのアプローチとして,地球外の対象や素材を研究している天文学,惑星科学,隕石学,シミュレーション学の分野についてまとめた。天文学は,系外惑星は非常に多様で,我々の太陽系はひとつ多様性に過ぎないことが明らかにしたことで,惑星系形成に新たなモデル構築を迫った。惑星科学では,小惑星帯の化学的束縛条件があり,ハビタブルトリニティとして陸の存在も生命誕生には重要であることがわかってきた。隕石学では,生命誕生における化学的束縛条件と時間的束縛条件がつけられ,還元的で無水のE コンドライトが地球の材料になることがわかってきた。シミュレーション学において,タンデムモデルによって太陽系形成や系外惑星の多様性も説明できるようになってきた。地球は二段階モデルで,最初は還元的で無水の状態で形成され,その後炭素質コンドライトによる揮発成分が供給されるABEL 爆撃が起こった。地球外の学問によって生命誕生のための束縛条件が明らかにされてきた。In this paper, as an approach to the birth of life, astronomy, planetary science, meteoritic studies, and simulation studies are summarized as studies on extra‒terrestrial objects and materials. In astronomy, extrasolar planets are very diverse and our solar system is only one diversity. New models are now needed in the formation of planetary systems. In planetary science, the chemical conditions of the asteroid belt were revealed and the existence of land as a habitable trinity have is important for lifeʼs origin. In meteoritic studies, meteorites were given chemical and time constraints for the lifeʼs origin. It has been found that reductive, anhydrous E chondrite‒like solid matter is the raw material of the Earth. In simulation studies, the tandem model could explain origin of the solar system and diversity of extrasolar planets. The Earth formed reductive, anhydrous materials and an ABEL bombardment providing volatiles from carbonaceous chondrites followed.
