Critical Thinking in EFL Students' Argumentative Writing: Manifestations and Challenges
Critical thinking (CT) is widely recognized as an essential component of academic writing, yet EFL students often struggle to apply it effectively in argumentative essays. While previous studies have examined correlations between CT and writing quality or evaluated teaching interventions, less is known about how CT actually manifests in students’ written work and the challenges they encounter in real writing contexts. This study addresses this gap by exploring both the textual indicators of CT and students’ lived experiences of integrating it into their essays. The study involved 27 fifth-semester English education majors at a private university in Jakarta, Indonesia, with English proficiency ranging from intermediate to pre-advanced. Data were collected through two argumentative writing tasks, a focus group discussion, and document analysis. Thematic analysis and structured coding were used to identify CT indicators and challenges, with findings triangulated across data sources. Results showed that students demonstrated CT through coherent argumentation, use of evidence, engagement with counter-arguments, and organized essay structure. However, they struggled with organizing complex ideas, synthesizing information from multiple sources, and balancing creativity with logical reasoning, leading to disjointed arguments and superficial use of evidence. The study highlights the gap between theoretical CT standards and their practical application in EFL writing, underscoring the need for targeted instruction in argument structuring, source evaluation, and counter-argumentation
Designing Meaningful Lessons: Barriers and Solutions in Instructional Planning Among Indonesian Prospective EFL Teachers
Instructional planning is widely recognised as essential for effective teaching, yet prospective teachers often lack the knowledge, experience, and resources to design context-responsive lessons. Research on lesson planning has predominantly focused on in-service teachers, leaving limited insight into the multidimensional barriers teacher candidates face in Indonesian EFL contexts, particularly within private universities. This qualitative case study addresses this gap by examining two guiding questions: (1) What factors hinder prospective teachers in designing instructional plans? Moreover, (2) What solutions can effectively address these barriers? Three purposively selected eighth-semester students from the English Language Education Study Program at a private university in Indonesia were studied based on scaffolding principles. Data were triangulated through open-ended questionnaires, semi-structured interviews, and document analysis, and then analysed thematically with member checking to ensure trustworthiness. Findings highlight three interconnected challenges: limited mastery of pedagogical vocabulary and authentic material development, misalignment between methods and materials, and a persistent gap between theoretical coursework and practical classroom dynamics. Proposed solutions include intensive tiered mentoring by lecturers and supervising teachers, integration of authentic locally relevant materials, and real-case-based lesson design workshops. These findings contribute to teacher education research by offering evidence-based recommendations for curriculum reform and practicum design that strengthen prospective teachers’ competence in creating meaningful and contextually grounded lesson plans
PENGUATAN NILAI KARAKTER DAN TANGGUNG JAWAB SISWA MELALUI IMTAQ DI MA HIZBUL WATHAN
Strengthening students’ character and sense of responsibility is an essential aspect of moral education. The Imtaq (faith and piety) program has the potential to serve as a religious foundation that reinforces these values when systematically integrated into school activities. This study aims to analyze how the Imtaq program at MA Hizbul Wathan NW Semaya strengthens students’ character and responsibility. The research employs a qualitative metodhs supported by an analysis of five recent journals related to Imtaq and character education. The findings show that the implementation of Imtaq through habitual worship, Qur’an recitation, religious studies, and structured spiritual guidance contributes positively to the development of honesty, discipline, and responsibility. The main supporting factors include the commitment of teachers and school leaders, a religious school environment, and consistent program management. Therefore, the Imtaq program is proven to be an effective means of strengthening students’ character and responsibility when implemented sustainably and systematically within the school environment
Strategi Group Investigation untuk Pembelajaran Sejarah di Era Society 5.0: Tantangan dan Solusi
Group Investigation is a learning model that is considered appropriate and effective in learning history in the era of society 5.0, but in an era that continues to develop and is fast-paced, the challenges faced in implementing group investigation strategies also vary. In line with these problems, the author intends to provide solutions related to the challenges faced in implementing the Group Investigation learning model in learning history in the era of society 5.0. This research uses a qualitative approach to the literature study method, through the technique of collecting sources relevant to the discussion within the last 10 years. Secondary data was obtained through interviews with teachers in a private institution randomly to ask about the problems experienced by teachers and students at this time. The results of this study show four challenges in applying the group investigation model to learning in the era of society 5.0 including, the character of students today, the background of teachers in accepting technology, the misuse of technology by students, and the uneven distribution of the use of learning. This problem is based on several aspects including individual students, teachers, and schools. The role of teachers in facing this challenge is crucial, where teachers are the main actors in the classroom. So it requires teachers to create a conducive and systematic learning environment. In line with this statement, the solution provided not only refers to the needs of students in teaching and learning activities but also involves teacher creativity in implementing learning. So that the challenges in applying the group investigation learning model can be resolved easily and accurately
Kolonialisme Belanda di Wilayah Kecamatan Parlilitan dan Dampaknya terhadap Sosial-Budaya Masyarakat, 1877-1907
This paper analyzes the Dutch colonial presence in the Parlilitan District between 1877 and 1907, examining its impact on the socio-cultural dynamics of the local community. Historical records indicate that Dutch colonialism in the Batak region—particularly in Parlilitan—was not only exploitative but also constituted a form of systemic violence and a violation of human rights. Employing qualitative research methods, including interviews and literature review, this study reveals that the Dutch regime engaged in coercive and oppressive practices that instilled fear among the local population. These included threats, forced labor (rodi), and the destruction of community assets such as rice field huts. Direct resistance was rare, as the colonial forces possessed superior weaponry and physical strength. Instead, the local population resorted to passive forms of resistance, such as fleeing into forests or migrating to safer regions. The colonial period significantly altered the community’s socio-cultural fabric, resulting in a collective sense of inferiority, the erosion of customary legal authority, transformations in labor patterns, and increased mobility due to the construction of transportation infrastructure
Karel Holle dan Modernisasi Pengetahuan Pertanian Sunda Abad XIX: Potensinya sebagai Sumber Belajar Sejarah Berwawasan Lingkungan
This article highlights the role of Karel Frederik Holle, a Dutch figure who worked in the Sundanese Land in the 19th century. Holle played a role in the development of agricultural techniques. Through historical methods, by conducting in-depth readings of archival sources and Holle's writings, this article attempts to examine Holle's contribution in introducing a sustainable agricultural system, including soil conservation techniques and adaptive planting patterns based on collaboration within both, Western and local knowledge. In addition, this article examines the potential for utilizing Holle's work as a source of historical learning that not only enriches students' insights into the past event, but also enhancing environmental awareness. The results of this articleshows that Holle gave so much contribution on agriculture technological knowledge. He also had an ecological vision that are relevant to the context of current history learning which offers a new historiographic theme, environmental history learning. Thus, this figure can be used as an entry point for history education that concern on sustainable environmental values
REWARD ASYIK UNTUK MENINGKATKAN PERCAYA DIRI MELALUI PERMAINAN TEBAK HURUF DI PAUD CERIA
Perkembangan bahasa anak masih belum optimal terlihat dimana peserta didik mengalami kesulitan merangkai huruf. Permainan tebak huruf dilakukan untuk melihat peningkatan percaya diri peserta didik di PAUD Ceria. Permainan tebak huruf di pilih karena ketika digunakan dalam pembelajaran di kelas memberikan peningkatan dalam mengenal huruf yang berpengaruh dalam meningkatkan percaya diri peserta didik. Permainan tebak huruf ini di dukung dengan reward asyik. Dimana ketika peserta didik dapat menebak huruf yang di berikan oleh guru, peserta didik akan diberikan reward asyik berupa yel-yel motivasi. Penelitian ini menggunakan Penelitian Tindakan Kelas (PTK) dengan dua siklus. Ada beberapa tahap yang di lakukan dalam penerapan reward asyik ini yaitu:(1)Tahap perencanaan; (2)Tahap pelaksanaan; (3)Tahap pengamatan;(4)Tahap refleksi. Adapun hasil dari siklus I sebesar 55% meningkat pada siklus II sebesar 78%. Sehingga hasil penerapan reward asyik untuk meningkatkan percaya diri melalui permainan tebak huruf di PAUD Ceria memberikan peningkatan percaya diri pada peserta didik
Pengaruh Media Board Game Terhadap Perkembangan Kognitif Anak Usia 5-6 Tahun: Indonesia
Penelitian ini bertujuan mengetahui pengaruh media board game dalam meningkatkan perkembangan kognitif anak usia 5-6 tahun di kelompok B2 TK Kemala Bhayangkari 1 Surabaya. Sampel dalam penelitian ini yaitu anak usia 5-6 tahun yang berjumlah 15 anak kelompok B2 TK Kemala Bhayangkari 1 Surabaya. Metode penelitian yang digunakan adalah kuantitatif dengan desain one grup pretest postest melalui pengujian non parametrik Wilcoxon signed rank test. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan peningkatan hasil dari pretest ke postest. Hal ini menunjukkan adanya pengaruh media board game dalam meningkatkan perkembangan kognitif anak usia 5-6 tahun kelompok B2 TK Kemala Bhayangkari 1 Surabaya. Pada media board game materi berkaitan tentang perkembangan kognitif yaitu melengkapi kata, menyebutkan dan menuliskan angka 1-12 seperti pada jam dinding, menarik garis serta mengaitkan antara tempat ibadah dengan agama, memahami arti kata melalui ekspresi seperti kata marah diletakan pada ekspresi marah, dan dapat menuliskan nama diri sendiri dengan baik. 
Hubungan Antara Pendidikan Karakter Dengan Perilaku Tanggu Jawab Siswa Kelas Tinggi Di SDN 309 Panceng Gresik
Pendidikan karakter penting untuk membangun kesadaran sosial dan kepedulian terhadap lingkungan sekitar, sehingga siswa tidak hanya memiliki kemampuan kognitif tetapi juga kecerdasan emosional yang kuat. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui hubungan antara pendidikan karakter dengan tanggung jawab siswa kelas tinggi di SDN 309 Panceng Gresik. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan kuantitatif dengan jenis korelasional. Sampel penelitian berjumlah 38 siswa, yang diambil menggunakan teknik total sampling. Instrumen penelitian berupa angket, dan data dianalisis menggunakan SPSS versi 25. Uji validitas menunjukkan semua item angket valid, sedangkan reliabilitas menunjukkan nilai Cronbach’s Alpha sebesar 0,365 (kategori rendah). Uji normalitas menunjukkan data berdistribusi normal. Hasil uji korelasi Pearson menunjukkan nilai r = 0,992 dengan signifikansi 0,000, yang berarti terdapat hubungan sangat kuat dan signifikan antara pendidikan karakter dengan tanggung jawab siswa. Dapat disimpulkan bahwa semakin baik pendidikan karakter yang diterima siswa, maka semakin tinggi pula tanggung jawab yang mereka tunjukkan dalam pembelajara
Tingkat Pengetahuan Mahasiswa Olahraga di Kabupaten Ngawi terhadap Pencegahan dan Penanganan Cedera Olahraga
Sports injuries are a significant problem that can affect the long-term health and performance of athletes. This study aims to analyze the level of knowledge of sports students in Ngawi Regency about the prevention and management of sports injuries, as well as the factors that influence it. This study used a quantitative design with a descriptive approach, with the main instrument being a structured questionnaire distributed to 200 sports students enrolled in universities in Ngawi Regency. The results showed that the majority of respondents had a sufficient level of knowledge, but there were still a large number of students who had insufficient knowledge about sports injuries. Age and gender were found to have an influence on students' knowledge level, where older and male students tended to have better knowledge compared to younger and female students. Based on these results, this study recommends the enhancement of a more comprehensive education and training programme in the sports education curriculum, which includes injury prevention techniques, use of protective equipment, and first aid. A more structured and evidence-based education programme could improve students' understanding of sports injuries and help reduce the incidence of injuries in sporting activities.Cedera olahraga merupakan masalah signifikan yang dapat mempengaruhi kesehatan jangka panjang dan kinerja atlet. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis tingkat pengetahuan mahasiswa olahraga di Kabupaten Ngawi tentang pencegahan dan penanganan cedera olahraga, serta faktor-faktor yang memengaruhinya. Penelitian ini menggunakan desain kuantitatif dengan pendekatan deskriptif, dengan instrumen utama berupa kuesioner terstruktur yang dibagikan kepada 200 mahasiswa olahraga yang terdaftar di perguruan tinggi di Kabupaten Ngawi. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa mayoritas responden memiliki tingkat pengetahuan yang cukup, namun masih terdapat sebagian besar mahasiswa yang memiliki pengetahuan yang kurang mengenai cedera olahraga. Faktor usia dan jenis kelamin ditemukan memiliki pengaruh terhadap tingkat pengetahuan mahasiswa, di mana mahasiswa yang lebih tua dan laki-laki cenderung memiliki pengetahuan yang lebih baik dibandingkan dengan mahasiswa yang lebih muda dan perempuan. Berdasarkan hasil ini, penelitian ini merekomendasikan peningkatan program edukasi dan pelatihan yang lebih komprehensif dalam kurikulum pendidikan olahraga, yang mencakup teknik pencegahan cedera, penggunaan alat pelindung, serta pertolongan pertama. Program edukasi yang lebih terstruktur dan berbasis bukti dapat meningkatkan pemahaman mahasiswa tentang cedera olahraga dan membantu mengurangi kejadian cedera dalam kegiatan olahraga
