Get PDFThe relationship between sufficiency of recommended screen time and depression among Chinese adolescents. Prolonged screen use and sedentary behavior in daily life have been identified as factors that have various impacts on the mental and physical health, prosocial behavior, and academic performance of children and adolescents. However, there is a limited number of studies investigating the relationship between screen time and depression, specifically within the context of mental health. This study aims to explore the actual situation of recommended screen time and examine its association with depression, with the goal of promoting and enhancing the mental and physical well-being of Chinese adolescents. The methods analyzed data from 1,208 Chinese junior high school students who participated in an internet-based survey. Screen time on weekdays and weekends was classified as sufficient if it was less than the recommendation (2hours /day). Depression was categorized into two groups based on the evaluation criteria of the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale (CES-D). A binomial logistic regression was conducted, with the screen time sufficiency group as the reference category, to examine the relationship between screen time sufficiency and each variable. As a result, the study showed that participants had longer screen time on weekends. Also, that low sufficiency of the recommended criteria is associated with depression. The study demons trated an relationship between low adherence to recommended screen time on both weekdays and weekends, and depressive symptoms. This suggests the potential impact of screen time on the mental health of adolescents. Effective measures are necessary to improve the mental health of adolescents and reduce screen time.departmental bulletin pape
