The Other Side of Ramadan: Ramadan and its implication on Social Cohesion in West Sumatra and Yogyakarta
This article examines the implications of Ramadan on social cohesion in communities in West Sumatra and Yogyakarta. The issue is based on the assumption that Ramadan is a religious momentum that is only concerned with the vertical affairs between humans and their Lord alone and has a social dimension, i.e., values of solidarity, sense of belonging, tolerance, and social harmony. These are fostered through religious rituals such as fasting, zakat, and other kinds of worship. The study adopted a qualitative approach and was supported by survey data on several selected community samples. Survey data was collected related to the volume of philanthropy, the frequency of ritual worship during the month of Ramadan concerning the level of quality of social cohesion, solidarity, and social trustworthiness. In addition, the data were collected through a questionnaire instrument to capture the fundamental impact of Ramadan on strengthening social capital. In general, this study concludes that West Sumatra is superior to Yogyakarta for its social cohesion on 3 (three) indicators: moral feeling, sense of belonging, and social harmony. However, despite the difference in numbers between the two regions, there are differences among indicators. While for the other two indicators, safety feeling and tolerance, Yogyakarta is better than West Sumatra
Lordship and Humanity Principles for The Peace of Indonesia: An Integrative Study of Theology and Ideology
This study is stimulated by the background of the gap regarding the understanding and application between the Indonesian ideology of Pancasila and theology (religion) among both Muslims and Christians. This research aimed to study the integration between Christian theology and the Indonesian ideology of Pancasila. This research was based upon the naturalistic paradigm with a qualitative approach and integrative research method to find a model for solving religious intolerance and violence, which is often manipulated by political interests. This integrative study, especially integral dialectical synthesis, is to find a holistic knowledge of the doctrine of the principle of One Lordship, just and civilized humanity according to Christian theology and ideology of Pancasila as a model of integration. The integrative study between theology and ideology confirms that each of the five principles of Pancasila is theological, and even a mandate that believers (the Christians community) must obey. The relationship between Christian theology and the ideology of Pancasila is an integrative relationship because God and humanity are also integrative. These findings suggest that all Christians live in love and respect to their fellow humans, both Christian and non-Christian. Loving God and others means loving the Indonesian people by participating in overcoming the nation's problems and building the Indonesian nation's welfare for the welfare of the nation is our (all Indonesian citizens) wellbeing
RELEVANSI NILAI RAHMATAN LIL ALAMIN K.H.
Distance Learning During the Pandemic Era: Online Learning Experiences of State Madrasah Tsanawiyah Students During Covid-19 in Indonesia
Online learning policies serving as the answer to the world of education during the COVID-19 pandemic period raise some problems to students. They find it difficult to understand learning materials because the teacher's explanation is very limited, so many tasks and teachers cannot supervise the students. As a result, students are quickly getting bored with learning activities at home, they cannot directly meet their classmates; and this condition is getting worse due to the fact that their homes are less supportive to their learning activities. This research is aimed at studying the State Madrasah Tsanawiyah Students’ experiences during the Covid-19 pandemic era from March to July 2020. A descriptive qualitative analysis method was employed. The primary data were obtained from the results of observations and open questionnnaires sent to 42 the madrasah tsanawiyah students from Sidoarjo, Malang, Yogyakarta, Jakarta, Aceh, and Padang Panjang. The secondary data were taken from online news about the distance learning. It was found that the distance learning for madrasah tsanawiyah students was troublesome experiences due to inadequate facility and infrastructures in the internet quota, smart phones, laptops, and also unsupporting home environment and improper the teaching techniques. However, some students were happy with this distance learning because it may give them new experiences, learning with a laptop or a mobile phone is exciting, it may improve the literacy in technology, it is flexible in terms of time, and it is not necessary for them to go to schools. It is recommended that the government improve the quality of the internet services, give more internet assistance quota, and hold training for the teachers on online learning
Resistance of Hindu Traditionalist Against Sampradaya Hare Krishna Bali
This research was conducted to understand the tension between two internal Hindu religious groups in Bali since 1984. The tension shows resistance of Balinese traditional Hindus to the Sampradaya or the spiritualist group of the Hare Krishna consciousness movement. The feud started from a hate speech on social media from both sides that leads to physical persecution. The research was conducted using a case study method, with interviews and observations at the scene and religious practices. This study found out that the conflict was rooted in different religious understandings between the Hare Krishna Gaudy Vaisnava theology and Balinese Hindu Traditional, as well as differences in acceptance of Balinese religious traditions. The contestation of the two parties escalated the feud on social media, then heated up to the closing of Hare Krishna's religious activities. The accumulation of tension was also triggered by religious activities and the appearance of Hare Krishna followers was considered to be in contrast to the Balinese traditional community, and the rite system was considered not to reflect Balinese customs. The research concludes that the institutional interaction between the two parties is deadlocked, although so far there is still a safety valve, namely Nyama Baraya, but the potential for conflict still arises. Similarity of ethnic background; dialogue intentions do not find common ground, the reintegration process is threatened with failure. A solution through dialogue is still the best step compared to resolving power or law enforcement, therefore efforts to bring the two parties together in dialogue must continue
Akulturasi Islam dan Budaya Lokal dalam Tradisi Mangaji Kamatian Pada Masyarakat Lareh Nan Panjang Kabupaten Padang Pariaman
The tradition of mangaji kamatian is a form of acculturation of Minangkabau and Islamic culture in Minangkabau. The community interprets this tradition as a form of practice of the sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad. However, some other people interpret this form of tradition as an act of bid'ah (heresy), and some understand it as a form of the practice of jahiliyah, which is haram (forbidden) to carry out. This study uses field research methods using a phenomenological approach with a living hadith model. The results showed that the mangaji kamatian tradition that lives in the Lareh Nan Panjang community is acculturation between Islamic teachings with clear arguments in the Qur’an and hadiths with the customs and cultures that exist in the area. Historically, the mangaji kamatian tradition is a form of interpretation of Shaykh Burhanuddin, a Muslim scholar who spread Islam in Padang Pariaman in the 16-17 century on verses of the Qur’an and hadiths of the Prophet Muhammad SAW related to takziyah. Shaykh Burhanuddin slowly transformed the people who at that time wept when they were stricken by death with a procession of reciting verses from the Koran, prayers, zikir, tahlil and prayers
Transmission of Islamic Values in Public School: A Study at State Senior High School 5 Yogyakarta
The process of transmitting Islamic values to the younger generation remains an appealing study as Indonesia is a country with the largest Muslim population in the world. Unfortunately, previous studies on this topic focused more on the process of transmitting these values through formal and informal religious based educational institutions. This research took a unique position to study the Islamic values transmission within non-religious based public school. This qualitative research employed the case study approach to examine the process of instilling Islamic values in public schools. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, observation, and study of relevant documentation. The collected data were analyzed using the inductive interactive techniques of the Miles and Huberman models. This study showed that 1) the values of iman-taqwa (faith-piety) and akhlaq mulia (good morals) were an important embodiment of affection-based educational programs in schools. 2) These values were instilled by the school through a habituation process, supported by the function of the principal and teachers as role models and the important role of Rohis (Islamic organization). The inculcation of Islamic values was not only carried out by religious education teachers, but also transmitted by secular subject teachers as well as extracurricular activities. The findings of this study confirmed that public schools in Indonesia were now transformed as important instruments for the transmission of Islamic values to young Muslims. This research suggests important recommendations on the need to develop the capacity of teachers in schools to make them agents of moderation of Islamic values.
