Maturation and fixation are polar opposites

Digitalization has arrived in education. It is anchored in the formal education system of our children and young people both as a separate subject "digital basic education" and as an interdisciplinary competence "media education". Digital (basic) education in Austria is based on three pillars: IT education, media education and design competence. Current discussions revolve primarily around IT education, i.e. a practically applied mindset that - in the sense of computational thinking - is problem-centered and solution-oriented. It is used to solve specific technical tasks, the aim of which is to ensure flawless function, to eliminate errors and to understand IT systems. Every now and then one also comes across media pedagogical approaches of the "media-critical" questioning attitude of media education, which is just as aware of the social and personal implications of technology use as it is of problematic social processes, as Dieter Baacke identified back in the 1990s (Baacke 1996)
Climate Change and Migration: Climate Change Induced Migration in International Law and the Human Right to a Sustainable Environment
Dies lässt Betroffene in unsicheren Verhältnissen zurück. Droughts, floods, sea-level rise, and other climate change induced phenomena are substantially threatening lives and livelihoods, forcing many to abandon their homes. Despite the global dimension of these increasing phenomena, international legal instruments provide little guidance on how to deal with environmental migration, leaving those affected under insecure circumstances. The complex topic of climate change and migration renders debates with many unresolved issues. To shed some light on this complexity, this paper describes the difficulties in the discussion on climate change induced migration in international law and aims to explain why the label “climate refugee” is not yet an accurate one. The case study Ioane Teitiota v. New Zealand will be discussed, demonstrating how the theoretical dilemma impacts affected persons on a practical level. The final part of the paper examines the possibilities of approaching climate migration from an alternative perspective, going beyond existing legal instruments. It suggests a shift from the debate on “climate refugees” to including migration in current climate adaptation efforts. Such a mechanism could be financially supported by operational adaptation funds and also politically backed by the pending Advisory Opinion of the International Court of Justice on the Human Right to a Clean, Healthy, and Sustainable Environment
Revisiting Petrie’s excavations at Naqada: Cross-matching the available documentary evidence and new digital map
When W. M. F. Petrie published the results of his archaeological fieldwork at Naqada in 1895, he included a single map on which over 2,200 tombs are shown at a tiny scale, with most left unnumbered. A series of sketch-plans included among the pages of excavation notebooks preserved at the Petrie Museum, UCL, are all presented here in facsimile and compared with the published plan of the cemeteries. Together with other occasional notes, they provide the basis for a new, digitised, searchable, and zoomable map of Naqada’s cemetery N (Great Cemetery), B, and T. These cemeteries are also re-situated in their landscape using freely accessible aerial images, since most of this archaeological area has been destroyed and is today under cultivation.
This article demonstrates the usefulness of thoroughly analysing manuscript documents written during excavations to correct and supplement published material; this approach can be applied to other archaeological sites
Death in Childbirth: History and Representations
Childbirth has long been likened to a battle, with women enduring pain and danger akin to soldiers in combat. This comparison, rooted in ancient times, persisted through the centuries, with women who died in childbirth honored like fallen warriors. Even prominent figures like Thomas Jefferson drew parallels between childbirth and soldiering. Throughout history, childbirth was fraught with peril, accepted as part of divine will or fate. Tragic stories, such as Jane Austen\u27s family losses, underscore the high toll childbirth took, especially in an era with limited contraception and medical understanding. Despite advancements, maternal mortality remained a significant concern well into the 20th century. Demographic records from the 18th and 19th centuries shed light on the prevalence of maternal deaths, highlighting the enduring risks women faced in bringing new life into the world
The Maternity House of Madrid, founded in 1837, provided a place for pregnant women to give birth anonymously. Many of them left their newborns in the care of the institution, which provided baptism, a wet nurse\u27s milk, and shrouds for infants whose time on earth was often short. This spared mothers from parish gossip, employer retaliation if they served in households, and the burdens and consequences associated with illegitimate children or offspring from adulterous affairs in 19th-century Catholic Spain. We analyzed data from 5,959 births recorded between 1860 and 1899 to examine the proportion of mothers who died during their stay at the Maternity House. The results showed mortality rates of 0.75%, 1.78%, 0.80%, and 1.07% across four periods, totaling 69 maternal deaths, or 1.16% of all cases analyzed. Additionally, data from 1898-1899 provided insights into the interval between childbirth and maternal death, shedding further light on this poignant historical phenomenon
Abstract: In Rubens\u27 Hercules and Omphale (1602-1605), the queen of Lydia, Omphale, is depicted pulling the ear of Hercules, son of Jupiter and Alcmena, in an unusual and vulgar gesture. This act symbolizes her dominance over the legendary hero. Omphale is portrayed as graceful and commanding, while Hercules, nearly naked, sits submissively beside her. This inversion of roles, with Omphale wielding Hercules\u27 lion skin cloak and him holding her spinning wheel, serves to ridicule and feminize him. The painting raises questions about power dynamics and gender roles in classical mythology. Omphale\u27s casual demeanor contrasts with Hercules\u27 stoic acceptance, hinting at a complex interplay of dominance and submission
