    中國古今註釋與詮釋研究: 導言

    No full text
Despite its centrality and its impact from a historical perspective, commentary is usually considered a tool for deciphering great works or as a faint trace of intellectual activity. Except for a few instances in the field of philosophy, it has been reduced to an ancillary status and denied that of a text per se. This introduction presents the framework in which the project of this special issue developed, the questions that were raised, and the key elements that characterise commentaries and that ap-peared through the project.

Advertising Peace and International Co-operation: The League of Nations and the “Weapon of Publicity”

    Get PDF
This article argues that it is impossible to write the history of the League of Nations without taking into account the methodological and theoretical framework provided by the New Diplomatic History. Since the League of Nations was never granted what could be called real political military power, it had to use other means to achieve its goals. “Softer” diplomatic strategies were therefore never merely decorative accessories of “hard” diplomatic practices, but the only ones available to the League of Nations. Thus, even the question of whether the League of Nations failed can be answered in different ways; while the organization could not prevent Hitler from starting the Second World War in 1939, it served as a laboratory for new diplomatic practices as long as it existed. This article argues that it is impossible to write the history of the League of Nations without taking into account the methodological and theoretical framework provided by the New Diplomatic History. Diplomacy and Its Influences: Key Players in the Negotiations on the Human Dimension at the CSCE Follow-Up Meeting in Vienna (1986-1989)

The Vienna follow-up meeting achieved an unprecedented breakthrough for the human dimension of the CSCE. This article explores this success by analysing three different levels: governments, delegations, and non-governmental players. Each government and its relationship with other nations formed the basis for the positions taken by its delegation. Nonetheless, the outcome of the meeting depended heavily on the negotiation skills of the diplomats. Hence, the delegates were at the centre of the negotiation process and were crucial to the understanding of the success of the meeting. External factors, in particular human rights organizations, although not allowed to take part in the negotiations, contributed to the process. This article argues that only by taking all three into consideration can the success be fully understood. The Vienna follow-up meeting achieved an unprecedented breakthrough for the human dimension of the CSCE. Natural Scientists in Late Habsburg Trieste: A Nationally Indifferent Island in the Noise of Contemporary Politics?

    Get PDF
Between 1874 and 1914, natural scientists from Trieste operated under the umbrella of the Adriatic Society of Natural Sciences (Società Adriatica di Scienze Naturali). Despite the ever-increasing importance of competing national projects in the course of the nineteenth century, this particular association and its members did not express sympathies with any kind of nationalism, nor did they identify with any other kind of political affiliation. These naturalists were a kind of scholarly in-betweens or, as they themselves repeatedly said, belonged to the translocal “Republic of Science” (“Repubblica della Scienza”). This article argues that the Adriatic Society of Natural Sciences was a unique setting in the increasingly nationalized everyday life of Trieste, proving that even immediately before the Great War there were important social spheres that were impervious to national projects.Between 1874 and 1914, natural scientists from Trieste operated under the umbrella of the Adriatic Society of Natural Sciences (Società Adriatica di Scienze Naturali).
