Ignorance and Vulnerability in Post-Colonial Diplomacy : Global South-UK Relations in the 1950s and 1960s
Get PDFIn the post-colonial era, both former colonizing and former colonized powers found themselves engaged in a dramatic renegotiation of diplomatic relationships. Against this backdrop, the access to, or withholding of, information and understanding about other states became a key asset in any mobilization of leverage and maintenance of agency. This article draws upon the case studies of the UK’s diplomatic relationships with African states and India in order to emphasize the virtue of combining New Diplomatic History (NDH) and history-of-knowledge approaches. Competing knowledges, and the denying of access to knowledge to others, could be mobilized in pursuit of competing agendas, both across and within national governments. The fragilities and contingencies behind the availability of information, coupled with enduring colonial-era prejudices which others could exploit, created areas of ignorance, and rendered governmental knowledge processes vulnerable.In the post-colonial era, both former colonizing and former colonized powers found themselves engaged in a dramatic renegotiation of diplomatic relationships. No full textThis article makes intersectional approaches accessible to historical empirical research. It starts from the assumption that a better understanding of students’ learning conditions can be gained by not focusing exclusively on a single category of difference and its effects on historical learning, but by including complex, interdependent structures in research projects. For this purpose, intersectionality is first discussed from the perspective of history education theory in order to develop an approach for empirical intersectional analysis. This is then used to examine the biographical experiences of seven students with so-called intellectual disabilities. The focus of intersectional analysis is to understand intersectional interdependencies.This article makes intersectional approaches accessible to historical empirical research. No full textThis article deals with the musical-cultural activities of the pianist, composer, and ethnomusicologist Yvette Grimaud (1921–2012). It explores Grimaud’s professional network, which she established as a student and young artist in Paris between the late 1930s and the early 1950s. It shows that Grimaud’s artistic identity and her self-concept coincided with this network well into her old age, and that the network could be reactivated without interruption in a different, new professional context after many years of inactivity.This article deals with the musical-cultural activities of the pianist, composer, and ethnomusicologist Yvette Grimaud (1921–2012). Das Unsichtbare sichtbar machen: Entscheidungsprozesse beim wissenschaftlichen Arbeiten in Zeiten von generativer KI
Get PDFGenerative KI transformiert wissenschaftliches Arbeiten – aber wie? Diese Frage steht im Zentrum eines Literatur-Reviews zu Studien zur KI-Nutzung von Studierenden, die im Frühsommer 2023 im deutschsprachigen Raum durchgeführt wurden (Cieliebak et al., 2023; Herczeg et al., 2023; N. Hoffmann & Schmidt, 2023; Preiß et al., 2023; von Garrel et al., 2023). Sie geben erste Hinweise darauf, welche Veränderungen im universitären Lernen und Schreiben bereits eingetreten sind. Daraus ergibt sich die Frage, wie sichergestellt werden kann, dass Studierende trotz allem das wissenschaftliche Schreiben lernen. Als eine mögliche Antwort auf diese Frage argumentiere ich dafür, die Aufmerksamkeit auf Entscheidungsprozesse beim wissenschaftlichen Arbeiten zu lenken. Schreibende müssen bereits eine Reihe von Entscheidungen getroffen haben, um KI-gestützten Tools mit schriftlichen Befehlen (Prompts) Anweisungen zu geben. Sie müssen ein Bild vor Augen haben, wie das gewünschte Ergebnis aussehen soll und wissen, nach welchen Kriterien sie die Ergebnisse von KI-gestützten Tools evaluieren sollen. Die Entscheidungsprozesse, die dem zugrundeliegen, sind häufig unsichtbar, da nur schwer artikulierbar, spielen aber eine zentrale Rolle für wissenschaftliches Arbeiten. Sie müssen entsprechend sichtbar gemacht werden– gerade in Zeiten von KI-gestützten Tools, die den Schreibprozess vermeintlich erleichtern
