History-Making: The Communist Party of Thailand’s Attempt to Shape Hmong and Lua Narratives
No full textArmed conflict between the Communist Party of Thailand (CPT) and the military of Thailand in northern Thai-land began in mid-1967. By the end of the 1960s, there were a number of CPT stronghold bases in the remote uplands of Northern Thailand. Large numbers of ethnic Hmong and Lua people joined the CPT, and the CPT strongholds were in areas where these groups had previously lived. During the 1970s, once the strongholds were established, the CPT organized a small project on the history of ethnic groups that had not been re-ported on so far. Led by a scholar formerly from Bangkok and involving ethnic Hmong and ethnic Lua men, the project was expected to collect, compile, and analyze ethnic group histories and create a written history in Central Thai language. While the project was never completed – and no documents appear to have sur-vived from it – the Hmong man who worked on the project has provided an oral account of what happened, one that reveals some aspects of CPT political thought, particularly in relation to ideas about ethnic minority histories. The main argument here is that the CPT, as with other communist regimes in Asia, saw ethnic har-mony as important for its broader political project, and tried to enhance good relations through the devel-opment of a politically acceptable history that would also fit with Hmong and Lua expectations. The paper contributes to a better understanding of the CPT’s approach to ethnicity issues
Potentials of deconstruction - the idea of ectogenesis as a paradoxical feminist utopia: Potenziale der Dekonstruktion von Geschlecht
No full textReproduktionstechnologien sind seit ihrer Entstehung Ausgangspunkt feministischer Diskurse. Eine zentrale Konfliktlinie ist hierbei der Umgang mit (Geschlechter-)Differenz, die insbesondere im Kontext von Ektogenese (die Auslagerung von Schwangerschaft und Geburt aus dem menschlichen Körper) sichtbar wird. Ausgehend von der leitgebenden Forschungsfrage, inwiefern Ektogenese als feministische (utopische) Idee Möglichkeiten der Dekonstruktion von Geschlecht bietet, wird der Theoriediskurs im Zeitraum von 1970 bis 2022 analysiert. Disziplinenübergreifend werden feministische Texte ausgewählt und mithilfe der Methode der qualitativen Inhaltsanalyse hinsichtlich inhärenter ambivalenter Konstruktionsprozesse von Geschlecht untersucht. Die Analyse verdeutlicht die Relevanz von spezifischen Vorstellungen von Körper, Natur, Mutterschaft und Technologien im Kontext von Ektogenese. Hierbei werden (binäre) Geschlechtskonzeptionen dargestellt und dekonstruiert, aber auch erneut festgeschrieben. Diese Reproduktion von Zweigeschlechtlichkeit vor dem Hintergrund eben diese aufzulösen, verdeutlicht die tiefe Verankerung von geschlechtsspezifischen Zuschreibungen auf der strukturellen Ebene.
Reproductive technologies have been a key starting point for feminist discourses since their emergence. A central line of conflict here relates to dealing with (gender) difference, which becomes particularly visible in the context of ectogenesis (the outsourcing of pregnancy and birth from the human body). Guided by the question, to what extent ectogenesis as a feminist (utopian) idea offers possibilities for the deconstruction of gender, the present study analyses the theoretical discourse on the topic from the period of 1970 to 2022. Selected feminist texts across different disciplines are examined by using the method of qualitative content analysis, the focus lying on the inherently ambivalent processes of constructing gender. The analysis highlights the relevance of specific notions of body, nature, motherhood, and technologies in the context of ectogenesis, whereby (binary) conceptions of gender are analysed and deconstructed, but also re-solidified. The reproduction of the gender binary - even in apparent efforts to dissolve it - highlights how gender-specific attributions are deeply embedded in a structural level

AI tutor as Socratic Mentors: Transforming Student Learning in Research Methods
No full textKünstliche Intelligenz (KI) verändert die Hochschulbildung grundlegend, indem sie sowohl das Lernen für Studierende als auch die Betreuung von Abschlussarbeiten durch neue didaktische Werkzeuge unterstützt. Trotz bestehender Herausforderungen bietet KI Potenzial für die Personalisierung von Lernprozessen. Ein zentrales Problem in der Betreuung von Abschlussarbeiten sind Defizite in den methodischen Kompetenzen der Studierenden, insbesondere im Bereich der quantitativen Forschung. Eine quantitative Studie mit externen Lehrenden und Betreuenden ergab Lücken in diesen Kompetenzen. Auf Basis der Ergebnisse wird in diesem Beitrag ein Framework zur Integration von KI in die Betreuungsprozesse entwickelt. Das Resultat soll zeigen, wie ein KI-Tutor auf Basis sokratischer Dialoge Studierende bei der Entwicklung von wissenschaftlichen Problemstellungen und Forschungsfragen unterstützen kann sowie individuelle Hilfestellungen im Forschungsprozess bietet, um die Qualität wissenschaftlicher Arbeiten zu verbessern.Artificial intelligence (AI) is transforming higher education, enhancing learning for students and providing new tools for lecturers and thesis supervisors. Despite challenges, AI AI has the potential to be a powerful tool for teaching and thesis supervision especially through the facilitation of personalized learning experiences. A persistent issue in thesis supervision is the quality of students’ work and their competencies in research methods, particularly in quantitative research. A quantitative study with external lecturers and supervisors identified significant gaps in students\u27 methodological skills. Based on these findings, this paper proposes a framework for integrating AI into thesis supervision. The framework outlines how an AI tutor, using Socratic dialogues, can support students in key tasks such as developing purpose statements and research questions while offering personalized guidance throughout the research process, ultimately improving research quality and student learning outcomes
